Kids, today's lesson, History! Whereas the British are long gone, their influence remains. Case in point; our traditional wear. Do you know that our traditional wear, i.e the Pnar sari or Ïusem is hardly traditional in a strict sense of the word. It is our traditional wear by way of wholehearted adoption. Recently, I chanced on a conversation with a historian (with access to archives) and I was quite surprised to learn this fact. You see, back in the days, before the British came our women's dresses was basically a Thad Kyrchah, a ïu Paen and a Thad Spaeñ made of coarse eri silk. Much later, and with our interactions with our Coochbeharis rulers, we were introduced to refined silk and dyeing, which brought about our 'traditional traditional' wear like the muka khyrwang etc. The Pnar sari was not known up until the turn of the Twentieth Century, with the arrival of Welsh missionaries to these hills. The story goes, a woman Welsh missionary who was earlier posted in the plains of Sylhet was deputed to, what is now known as, Jaintia Hills and along with her she brought cotton and silk saris which she wore while she was posted in the plains. During her work as a missionary she observed the local garb and decided to put her old saris to use by adapting and contexualising them to look like a Thad Kyrchah and a Ïu Paen, thus starting the trend of the Pnar sari drape we see today. The Pnar sari is now worn by all Pnar women with Polyester being the most common fabric and also silk and other fabrics in varying degrees. The Pnar sari is now made in factories all over India, simply because it is actually an Indian sari but draped in a Pnar way. Dhara and other materials came much later, and these are mostly made in Assam and else where. Flannels (Phlelen), Merinas and tartans etc are also adapted from the missionaries and are now part of our traditional wear. This speaks volumes of our adaptability to the changing times, wherein a basic material such as polyester can be made into our national wear. Correct if I am wrong, but no other NE tribe can boast of such adaptability. And it has certainly made more colourful and interesting to the way we dress and carry our culture.

Covering an area of 300 square metres, the lake is a lifeline for many people. It serves as a source of water for hydropower generation, irrigation and drinking water supply in the region, other than being the source of income for many fishermen who largely depend on it. The lake is home to 233 species of aquatic plants, more than 100 species of birds, and 425 species of animals, including the Indian python and sambhar. What makes the Loktak Lake even more special is the Keibul Lamjao National Park located at the south western part of the lake. It is the world’s only floating national park and is home to the endangered Manipuri brow-antlered deer, Sangai. “Loktak is our mother. Since time immemorial, the lake has been feeding the people of Manipur and nourishing us”, a fisherwoman told The Northeast Today. #loktaklake #northeastindia #planetearth

I took a little journey to the unknown, and I came back changed I can feel it in my bones. I fucked with forces that our eyes can't see. Now the darkness got a hold on me. I have seen what the darkness does. I ain't never been away so long Don't look back them days are gone. Say goodbye to who I was. Follow me into the endless path. ~Meet me in the woods🎶🎤 By Lord Huron A song that elevated the vibes and kept the mood throughout the trip. And this spot here was giving me the perfect scenic experience relating to this song. I still try and sing it today, eventhough i forget the lyrics😥. . . . . . #nepal #travelgram #travellersnotebook #moodygrams #nationalgeographic #netgeotravel #northeastindia  #mypixeldiary #indianshutterbugs #instahills #travelphotography  #livetotravel #wanderinhills #wanderlusters #exploreindia #backpackerstory
