REMINISCING & RANDOM THOUGHTS I had my first drink when I was thirteen; my last when I was thirty. Both were life-altering. It all began for me in the seventies—the days of sex, drugs, and rock and roll. We didn’t have fentanyl, but had my mother known half the truth, she would have been mortified. The following year my brother James started drinking. Like me, James had an instant affinity for alcohol. We put our parents through hell. Dad drove around looking for us, checking ditches in the summer and snowdrifts in the winter when we didn’t come home at night. Mom just cried a lot. And prayed. Even though Mom never touched a drop, she has been deeply affected by addiction. Her ancestors. Her siblings. Two of her children. Struggling grandchildren. And on it goes. The family disease. Like Russian Roulette. Bing-bang. People tend to think that those of us in long-term recovery have it easy. Absolutely, without a doubt, my life has improved 1M%. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s easy. I’m surrounded by addiction. My son almost died from crack cocaine addiction. My girlfriend is dying. I’ve just learned how to roll with it better. There will always be days of deep soul searching and forgiveness. But mostly though, I pinch myself and can’t believe I made it. I am so grateful. Each challenge has enhanced my life in its own way.
