‘I carry the weight of eighty one years on my shoulders, but the truth is […] I don’t want to die yet’. Makvala’s husband, a veteran of WWII, passed away last year. The couple had received the socially vulnerable family allowance, which ranges from ₾10–₾60 ($4–$23) per family member as well as her husband’s state benefits as a veteran. "Has independence (azaadi) from colonial rule made a qualitative difference to the lives of landless agricultural labourers in Bihar, who constitute the poorest segment of the agrarian population in the state? This question, generated by the call of the author's conscience more than the requirements of the discipline (Sociology) to which he belongs, informs the present monograph. Based on the testimonies of several Dalit labourers in a Bihar village, it highlights the betrayal of the promise of social, economic and political justice that underlay the struggle for independence – a promise that is at the heart of the Indian Constitution. It describes the everyday problems faced by the labourers in accessing the basic necessities of existence, including food, clothing, shelter, healthcare and education. Their testimonies highlighting their tribulations, though confined to a single village, also reflect the dismal living conditions of their counterparts elsewhere in Bihar. The author argues that forces based on caste and class in the wider political economy of the state are antithetical to ameliorating the plight of those living in poverty."

Women have gotten the short end of the stick around the world, but today we are recognizing all the women in rural areas of developing countries to help bring them equal rights, better quality of life and greater opportunities as their hardships can be extremely difficult. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #ruralwomen #womensrights #empowerwomen #thefutureisfemale #dayofruralwomen #equality #humanrights #dignity #globalgoals #givingrightnow #actnow #poverty #changetheworld #giveback #bethechange #goodcause #changemakers #sustainabledevelopment #socialimpact #humanitarianaid #girlscount #feminism #genderequality

On #internationaldayofruralwomen, we remember that the majority of world’s poor live in rural areas, and recognise that poverty is rarely gender neutral – it hits women and girls hardest. . Here in the Baliem Valley in the remote highlands of West Papua, most of the indigenous peoples still live off the land as subsistence farmers. Each family keeps a home garden to supply their food as well as sell at the market. . The work of planting and harvesting is shared by men and women, but the job of taking crops to the city market traditionally falls to women. These ‘mamas’ spend hours carrying their family crops over long distances using woven ‘noken’ bags worn over their heads. . The same women will each also run a household, raise children, work for less pay - while far less is invested in their education, health and participation in leadership or decision-making. . The mamas epitomise the strength of poor women in rural areas. . They are a constant inspiration to our local partner in the highlands, P3W (an org completely run by women!) who are committed to helping lift the burdens of women and improve the lives of whole families. . Here's to strong women. . May we know them. May we be them. May we raise them up in power 💪 . . . . . . . . . . . #women #ruralwomen #papua #papuan #westpapuan #westpapua #baliem #baliemvalley #highlands #indigenous #farming #subsistence #poverty #poor #genderequality #equality #strength #power #empowerment #empowerwomen #strongwomen #strongfamilies #fight poverty #connectingcommunities #unitingworld

A moment to remember Exactly one year ago on 15th October 2017, i ran a #10km at Melbourne Marathon Festival for the first time. I finished the race with 54 Min and i was a bit upset as i wanted to finish under 50 min. It was my first ever official run and the reason that made me take part of this run and kept me motivated was my friends in community and detention center. I remember on September the government cut all support & housing for many of the people in community #detention centers and gave them 3 weeks to evacuate housing and look for work! i couldn't do much and that was my way of helping out. #asrc is one of the very few organisations who helps refugees and asylum seekers so i decided to take part of #run4refugees and fund-raise for this cause. I trained hard and with the help of kind people around me, we raised more than 1200 $. About 500 people ran last year for #run4refugees out of the 30 thousand people, collectively we managed to raise about 300 thousand $. My favorite photo of the whole race was this one near the finish line, It shows how tired i was, but also serious and determined to cross the finish line. I started the race fast and was very tired in the last 3 km, whenever i thought of giving up i think of my friends in detention and imagine them cheering me in the crowd. I wasn't sure if i was hallucinating or not ! At that moment before the end of the race i was listening to a motivational speech by Les Brown and part of it said something like "if you simply go after that thing that you want with all your capacity, strength and sagacity, #faith #hope and #confidence and stern pertinacity…if neither cold, #poverty, famine, nor gout, #sickness nor #pain, of body and brain, can keep you away from the thing that you want…if dogged and grim you beseech and beset it, with the help of #god, YOU WILL GET It! @melbmara
