I start yet another chapter into my fitness story. Today I start my Level 1 @precisionnutrition Certification! February 2018 was the month I decided to change my life. My goal was simple. Loose weight. As time went on, my focus began to shift from just weight loss to overall health and understanding my body and going after what my actual wants are for me. If you’d have asked me back in February would I be going to the gym 5 days a week and enjoying it, FUCK no! I continue to impress myself and achieve small goals nearly every week. I could never haves achieved any of this without the amazing members of @pxmcrossfit like @living_in_midnight, @phismi, @angelamkuhn, @jeffreycraigg, @emcwhite124, @ms.skullhead, @andothertimes, @cakey_break_heart, @toasted_blond, @michael_standish to name a few, who continue to inspire me to become a better version of myself. 🚨 Movement of the Week: Side Plank Rotation . . . In addition to working your ab and oblique muscles, this move tones your entire core including your hips, shoulders. The standard plank exercise is considered an isometric exercise, which you maintain a bridge, static position for a duration of time. Although the side plank with rotation is a plank exercise, it holds the element of both dynamic and static exercises. . . . Perform a dynamic twisting motion while holding the isometric side bridge position. By performing this oblique exercise, you will tone your abs, strengthen the entire core, improve your posture, and reduce your risk of back pain. Side plank with rotation is more challenging than classic side plank and requires pre-existing strength and stability to perform it with proper form. . . . If your fitness level allows you to hold side plank for 60 seconds or more, try this advance, dynamic side plank to spice up your abs workout and keep challenging yourself. . . . How to Do the Side Plank with Rotation: Lie on your left side on the mat and position your elbow directly under your right shoulder. -Stack together your legs, knees, ankles and feet. -Tighten abs. -Push your right elbow against the floor as you lift up your glutes and hips off the floor until left shoulder, left hip, and left foot are in a straight line. -Reach up with your right hand and extend. -Rotate your torso downwards and reach under your body with your left arm. -Rotate back to the side plank with arm up (Step 2) and repeat for 10-12 times before switching sides. . . . πŸ›Ž Movement of the Week ! - Bottoms-up KB Press . . . The bottoms-up kettlebell press is a great drill to build shoulder strength and mobility. The challenge of keeping the kettlebell upside down teaches you how to tighten the core and find your groove in the press. . . . The half kneeling position takes the lower body out of the equation and forces us to concentrate on the upper body pressing mechanics. . . . Benefits: πŸ“ -One of the biggest benefits of the bottoms-up press is that it teaches you the principle of irradiation. As you grip the bell tightly, the rest of your arm tenses. The tension in your arm irradiates to create more stability in your shoulder. Similarly, as you tense your torso, the irradiation principle increases strength in your shoulder. -Trains the Press: It helps you find the right groove for presses. Your shoulder will find the path of least resistance and most stability to press the weight. -Teaches Core Stability: Your thighs, glutes, abs, and lats must all be kept tight to build a solid foundation for the shoulder to press the kettlebell. If you are loose like a noodle below the press, it will be much more difficult to press the weight. -Relieves Achy Elbows and Shoulders: With the weight upside down, you will feel the pressure in your palm. This tends to keep the elbows in a great position. Bottoms-up presses are also an effective (but complicated) rehab tool, as they build ROTATOR CUFF strength. . . . How to execute: πŸ‹πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ -Start in a half kneeling position, back knee directly under the hip and a straight line from the knee, hip, shoulder and ear. -Front leg is directly out in front. -Body is tall and straight. -Grab the kettlebell and flip it upside down in one hand. -Arm should be about 45 degrees out, with the wrist and elbow in a straight line. -Brace through the trunk and press the kettlebell overhead, so that the bell, wrist, arm, shoulder, torso, hip and back leg are lined up. . . . Hip contact is an essential part of the Snatch. This element, and fundamental piece can be hard for new lifters to connect. This second pull is often missed when athletes focus more on cranking the weight overhead as quickly as possible which creates early pulls, bar chasing and amazing YouTube fails! I often hear new athletes say β€œif I don’t pull early or have to slow down at the hip I won’t make my lifts.” This is incorrect! Pulling early and skipping your hips will work in the beginning, but you, like everyone, will find your limiting factor when it comes to strength. Thus plateauing and beginning to miss heavier lifts. πŸ›Ž Movement of the Week: Clamshell Side Plank . . . . . One more great movement when it comes to Glute activation and Core stability. Clamshell produces a good amount of gluteus medius and gluteus maximus activity, especially if technique is excellent. Also creates that core/hip connection and increases body awareness. . . . . . How to execute: To do the Side Plank Clam, set up on your side propped up on your forearm with your elbow underneath your shoulder. Bend your knees so that your feet and lower legs are behind you. You can place your top hand on your hip or reach it up toward the ceiling, but don’t touch it down to the ground or use it to help you balance or press up. . . . . . Propped up on your elbow with your knees stacked, lift your bottom hip up off the ground, driving through your knee and forearm. As you bridge your hips up, lift your top leg up and toward the ceiling, keeping the knee bent. Open up your legs, lifting your top knee toward the ceiling using your glute. Make sure to squeeze your glutes forward as you lift. . . . . . As you lower the leg back down, lower your hip back down to the ground. . . . . . Repeat, bridging up as you raise your top knee up toward the ceiling. Complete all reps on one side before switching. Also keep your elbow under your shoulder and do not get too spread out. Really focus on bridging and lifting with your glute and obliques. . . . . . You can also make this move more challenging by completely lifting the top leg and even the foot if you would like. . . . . .
