Boston Marathon 2019: Survive and Advance... I tell my piano students that time spent dwelling on performance mistakes is time wasted. Nobody cares that you played it “perfectly” in the practice room. More importantly, the mistakes are a gift. They teach you what you don’t know. Though not satisfied, I’m proud of my finish at this year’s Boston Marathon. I’d like to believe that the result belied my current fitness level, but as my #dwrunning teammate @kait.a.hartman wrote, “sometimes you bring your A game to Boston and you still get it handed to you!” Indeed, there are marathons, and then there is The Boston Marathon. In your standard 26.2 mile fare, you generally expect to feel fine through 18-20 miles, but in Boston, the early unrelenting downhills threaten to bludgeon your quads and reduce you to “dead man walking” by the Wellesley Scream Tunnel. Forced to summon whatever reserve of will you have far earlier than you’d planned, you cast aside your goals one by one, littering the streets with your #sub3 dreams and your big #pr plans until you arrive at “just don’t walk!” Most runners have heard the cautionary tales of the early downhill miles by the time they toe the start line in Hopkinton. “Go too fast at the beginning, and there will be hell to pay later!” But, heeding the warnings doesn’t release you from the peril, and reverence promises you nothing. The hills - whether up or down - effect people differently, and while I hit them early and often in training, the tortuous descent from the crest of Heartbreak Hill to the refuge of Boylston Street taught me that it wasn’t enough. My legs are simply not yet calloused to the brutal pounding this course inflicts. In the end, my story is a common refrain. And perhaps to run Boston well, you just have to run Boston, again and again and again... After all, in 2019 I was 10 minutes faster than my 2018 debut, I placed 3,000+ spots higher than my bib placement, and - unlike last year - I never stopped. I’ll take it! Happy Monday, kicking of this week with my ASIAN BBQ CAULIFLOWER WINGS! Who wants to join me? 🙋🏻 These are so tasty and perfect as an appetizer or a snack 😜 I hope you guys like this savoury recipe! ASIAN BBQ CAULIFLOWER WINGS Ingredients: 1lb of cauliflower approx half of 907 g bag or half of a large head, cut into fairly large small to medium size pieces as they tend to shrink when they cook Batter: 3/4 cup flour 3/4 tsp garlic powder 1/2 tsp salt 3/4 cup almond milk Asian BBQ sauce: 1/4 cup hoisin sauce 2 tbsp mirin 1/2 tbsp fresh ginger grated 1/4 tsp garlic powder 2 tsp chili paste 1 tsp sesame oil 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice 1/2 tbsp sesame seeds Method: Combine all ingredients from the hoisin sauce to sesame seeds in a bowl, this is your asian bbq sauce. Preheat your oven to 450 F, whisk batter ingredients together in medium bowl, it should be thick enough to coat cauliflower, adding a couple more tbsps of milk to make a batter that coats wings. Dip each piece of cauliflower in batter, shaking excess off, place on a parchment lined baking sheet, bake for 10 mins. Take your cauliflower out of the oven, place into a large bowl and add 3/4 of your asian bbq sauce, and mix until combined, then place them back on to the baking tray and bake for 10 mins. Take out of the oven and brush with remaining sauce then place back into the oven and broil for 3-5 mins until golden brown, watch carefully as they will burn easily if left to broil too long. Top with sliced green onions for garnish.

For dinner, Matt had the No Cheese Italian Garden Pizza from @icelandfoods. He added cheese to half of it but I honestly don't think he needed to. The tomato base tasted like fresh tomatoes and the toppings had so much flavour! Just a simple and healthy dinner idea! 😋🙌🏼🥢rice and brown lentils with steamed veggies, baked tofu and enoki mushrooms 😍🍚🥦🍄🥕🥢 To make the lentil rice I added one cup jasmine rice with 1/4 cup lentils and 2.5 cups of water and cooked it in my rice cooker. I steamed chopped carrots, shitake mushrooms and broccoli then added soy sauce To make the tofu I patted dry a half block of firm tofu and marinated in soy sauce, maple syrup, paprika, cumin and a squeeze of lime juice. Then I baked the tofu in my airfryer at 400°F until they were crispy on the outside. Let's talk Easter restriction - once another holiday filled with anxiety and self-loathing, harmful eating habits; this year could not have looked more different to the past. I had lord knows how much chocolate, I had 3 different cakes🍰, homemade cookies 🍪 and I had 2 helpings of lasagne with extra delicious bready carbs on the side.🍞 All of these incredible foods would have once been off limits in the name of 'health' but now I realise that my mental health comes first and I can have my cake and literally eat it and not have to panic about getting back to exercise or even worse - - - purging afterwards. The extra fuel was very appreciated during my gym sesh this evening and I can carry on with my normal eating habits from now without feeling the need to binge or go overboard after having the taste of sugar. Feeling in such a good place and so pleased to have defeated the horrendous life-consuming illness which once ruined my social life and made everyday a struggle. I hope you all had a fabulous Easter - I'm now going to make myself horizontal and enjoy some more goodies for pudding because life is short and chocolate is wonderful. 🍫

Happy Earth Day everyone!! 🌎 To me, earth day is everyday because I believe we should all be conscious on the amount of waste we create per day. On average a single individual creates about 20 lbs. of waster a month. That is a lot. So many landfills are starting to reach capacity. How much longer will it be until we no longer find a ‘place’ to put our waste in? We only have 1 earth and it’s time we start waking up and realizing that we can all make a change, starting from something as small as using reusable sustainable items like: bamboo utensils, metal straws, reusable bags, metal food containers, and hydroflasks to name a few. We have to be the change we want to see in the world. As the Lorax once said, “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not.” Stop being a bystander and take the first step to start a ripple effect that can create a big change in the long run.

There is a freedom that comes with liberation, it comes from completing the assignments of life. I’ve watched him track his food carefully, keep his nutrition 100% on point, wake up at 2:30AM to start training, 4 hour runs, 5 hour bike rides, 2 hour swims... this is & was NO joke. To celebrate EaRTH DAY 🌎🌎 today I’m sharing a loose RECIPE below (save for later🌿) - // cantaloupe melon, spinach cucumber and tomato in cheesy lemony cashew. - Swipe to see the before shots. - On a warm day like this I love a cool salad and this one I imagined as if a Caesar and a Greek salad had a vegan child salad 😁. It’s easy with very few ingredients and can double as full meal by adding a scoop of cooked grains like bulgur or Millet to the bowl. It’s also a perfect side salad to grilled food (remove the chickpeas for a lighter salad). You can add Kalamazoo olives to this salad (I would if I had them at home ). But it’s really delicious like this too. Here’s how too. - - The lemony cashew cheesy cream (serves 4) Blend: 100 g cashews 100 ml warm water 2 tablespoons nutritional yeast (can be substituted with 1 extra garlic clove) 1 garlic clove 1 tablespoon pine nuts 50 ml lemon juice 3/4 tsp salt 30 ml extra virginevolive oil Optional; add a teaspoon capers Taste and adjust with salt and lemon. Set aside Prep the salad; Mix per bowl; one part cantaloupe melon, chopped One part chopped fresh red tomatoes One part cucumber, chopped 1/2 part red bell pepper, chopped A handful of fresh greens (I use spinach) One part chickpeas Optimal: a sprinkle of fresh oregano leaves and parsley Drizzle with a little red vinegar and extra virgin olive oil, salt. Add a sprinkle of pine nuts. Mix the sauce with the salad, salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy

🔺Deadlift with barbell🔺I mentioned before how main compound lifts are the building blocks of strength training. Deadlifts are one of my favorites! This lift is primarily for lower back & hamstrings and also works glutes & abdominals. Important things to note: do not round your back! Keep your chest up and shoulders back. Avoid looking up or down, but rather remain neutral. I like my feet hip-width apart with my arms positioned just outside of them. Squeeze your lower back and glutes at the top without hyperextending. There are variations of traditional deadlifts that I have posted about before that are very beneficial as well. Romanian deadlifts are the same form, just with straight legs to focus more on hamstrings. Sumo deadlifts are a wider stance than traditional, focusing more on glutes. The second video I show a dynamic stretch you can do before deadlifting. Use light weight and hinge at your hips, bringing one leg back parallel to the ground. You will feel ab amazing hamstring stretch in the leg that remains planted. Race week kicked of today with a lovely morning recovery run in good company with @stowell.rachel and @hinsley.helen a nice gentle 5 chatty miles, always good to run and catch up with these two. I’m so excited about Sunday and can’t believe it’s just days away now. Had a great day today getting myself all ready for Sunday....quality yoga with @tayayoga which I will be doing more of this week, followed by a chilled shopping trip in town with my daughter and catch up with some friends, a lovely dog walk in the sun and a much needed sport massage by @kinetic_sports would recommend Ash he was very knowledgeable and definitely had his work cut out getting into my tight legs!
