Redemptorist Missionaries continue the charism of Alphonsus in the Church and in society. “Strong in faith, rejoicing in hope, burning with charity, on fire with zeal, in humility of heart and persevering in prayer, Redemptorists as apostolic men and genuine disciples of Saint Alphonsus follow Christ the Redeemer with Hearts full of joy; denying themselves and always ready to undertake what is demanding and challenging, they share in the mystery of Christ and proclaim it in Gospel simplicity of life and language, that they may bring to people Plentiful Redemption” (Redemptorist Constitutions, No. 20). Redemptorists live in missionary communities, always welcoming and prayerful, like Mary of Nazareth. By means of missions, retreats, parish ministry, ecumenical apostolates, the ministry of reconciliation and the teaching of Moral Theology, they proclaim the love of God our Father which in Jesus “dwelt amongst us” so as to become profound mercy and The Word of Life which nourishes the human heart and gives life meaning so as to live it to the fullest in freedom and solidarity with others. And, like Alphonsus, Redemptorists make a very clear option for the poor affirming their dignity and greatness before God and believing that the Good News of Our Lord is meant in a special way for them. There are over 5,500 Redemptorists; they work in 82 countries on all 5 continents helped by many men and women who collaborate in their mission and together form the Redemptorist Family. “Our Lady of Perpetual Help” is the missionary icon of the Congregation. The Redemptorist Fathers and Brothers serve at Sacred Heart Parish in Seattle. I willingly boast of my weakness, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I am content with weakness, with mistreatment, with distress, with persecutions and difficulties for the sake of Christ; for when I am powerless, it is then that I am strong. ------‐------ Source: Morning Prayer for the Friday of the 15th Week of Ordinary Time, 2 Corinthians 12:9b-10. ------‐------ Pic: Christ Cathedral, Garden Grove, CA

Some of the greatest lessons in priestly formation are learned when our seminarians leave campus. Here are a few of the ways they engage in ministry and service in diverse communities: 🔵Second-year theologians participate in the Clinical Pastoral Education program, a 10-12-week experience in a hospital chaplaincy setting providing ministerial services to people in various stages of illness. 🔵The Teaching Parish Program immerses seminarians in practical and pastoral experiences at local parishes throughout their formation. Classroom learning is important, but time in a parish allows seminarians to gain the skills they will need to become successful priests—encountering people in the everyday situations of their lives and helping them to recognize the presence of God. 🔵Seminarians also devote some of their free time to participating in local service projects throughout the year. On weekends, seminarians can be found volunteering at “tent city” on Lower Wacker Drive in Chicago, ministering to the homeless by providing food and clothing. Others volunteer at Our Lady of the Angels Mission, helping the Franciscan community's outreach to a poor area of the city. 🔵During the month of June, some of the men participate in summer language studies, allowing them to learn the languages of those they will minister to in the future. Many will travel across the globe to stay with host families for full immersion in a new culture. As you can imagine, there are substantial costs associated with this program. ➡️SUPPORT THESE FORMATION PROGRAMS: www.usml.edu/friends #seminary #semlife #wearemundelein #seminarians #priesthood #vocations #service #socialjustice #catholic #catholicism #catholicchurch #education #formation #prayforvocations #volunteer

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) has one mission, but many ministries. The mission is summed up in a phrase long associated with thier order, Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam ("For the Greater Glory of God"), often abbreviated as AMDG. Their ministries extend across a world of human need and striving — from parishes to prisons, from retreat centers to refugee resettlements, from schools to hospitals. And when they speak of their ministries, they speak not only of those with the "SJ" after their names, the vowed members of the Society of Jesus. Growing numbers of lay people are also taking part in their works, helping to steer their institutions, as partners in mission. This is not simply a pragmatic response to fewer religious vocations. It is grounded in a renewed theological vision of mutuality and partnership with the people of God. For all those animated by the Jesuit vision, ministry is an adventure. Their founder, Ignatius Loyola, captured this spirit when he sent his good friend, Francis Xavier, on a mission to the Far East. Ignatius told him — "Go, set the world on fire!" The Jesuits serve at Seattle University, Seattle Preparatory School, Seattle Nativity School, and St. Joseph Parish in Seattle. They also serve at Bellarmine Preparatory School, St. Leo the Great, St. Patrick and St. Rita of Cascia in Tacoma; and at Providence Medical Center, Everett, and Franciscan Health Care, Tacoma. Meet the Discalced Carmelite Nuns! They belong to the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, and her presence pervades their monastery and stamps their life with a distinctly Marian character! Their Carmelite family, in keeping with the example given them by St. Teresa, also lovingly honors St. Joseph. Holding everything in common, they challenge themselves to radical self-denial—to right relationship with one another and all creation. St. Teresa referred to the Carmelite community as “the little college of Christ.” Sisters in the community come from broad and varied backgrounds, each bringing their unique gifts and talents… each discovering new gifts and talents in Carmel. St. Teresa’s ideal, that we live our vocation in an atmosphere that strikes a balance between solitude on the one hand and community life on the other remains their daily striving and challenge. They believe that within their acts of sisterly kindness and the little ordinary things they do each day is hidden the grace and potential for personal and world transformation. They have a special focus in their prayer for the Church, for priests and for the missions. Founded in 1630 by Jesuit missionary Alexander de Rhodes, Domus Dei has a long history of evangelization. After 1954, when Vietnam was divided in two, many Catholics moved from the Communist North to the South where they could freely practice their religion. During this time, Domus Dei members helped immigrants adapt to the culture and environment in their new land. That ended in 1975, when the communists overtook the South as well. Many Domus Dei Religious fled the country to the United States, where the mission has continued. The Domus Dei Fathers serve the Vietnamese Catholic communities at Holy Family, Auburn, Our Lady of Lourdes, Seattle, St. Thomas, Tukwila, and the Proto-Cathedral of St. James the Greater, Vancouver. “He died, but he vanquished death; in himself he put an end to what we feared; he took it upon himself and he vanquished it, as a mighty hunter he captured and slew the lion.” – St. Augustine #jesuschrist #christian #romancatholic #catholic #mass #eucharist #pope #god #father #son #holyspirit #realpresence #amdg #catholicchurch #priesthood #church #pope #latin #saints #joy #peace #love #mary #holy #vocations #prayforvocations

For this passover to be perfect, we must suspend all the operations of the mind and we must transform the peak of our affections, directing them to God alone. This is a sacred mystical experience. It cannot be comprehended by anyone unless he surrenders himself to it; nor can he surrender himself to it unless he longs for it; nor can he long for it unless the Holy Spirit, whom Christ sent into the world, should come and inflame his innermost soul. Hence the Apostle says that this mystical wisdom is revealed by the Holy Spirit. If you ask how such things can occur, seek the answer in God’s grace, not in doctrine; in the longing of the will, not in the understanding; in the sighs of prayer, not in research; seek the bridegroom not the teacher; God and not man; darkness not daylight; and look not to the light but rather to the raging fire that carries the soul to God with intense fervor and glowing love. The fire is God, and the furnace is in Jerusalem, fired by Christ in the ardor of his loving passion. Only he understood this who said: My soul chose hanging and my bones death. Anyone who cherishes this kind of death can see God, for it is certainly true that: No man can look upon me and live. ------‐------ Source: Office of Readings for the Memorial of St. Bonaventure, Second Reading. For 800 years the mission of the Order of Preachers has been to proclaim the Gospel to every corner of the world. They do this for one simple reason: that every soul may come to know and love Jesus Christ. It was for this reason that St. Dominic de Guzman founded the Order of Preachers in 1216. Traveling through Spain and southern France with the Bishop of Osma, he encountered many confused people who believed that the physical world was evil, and created by an evil god. Dominic saw the need for good preachers who could explain the truth of the Catholic faith and reconcile those who had fallen away. As members of the Order of Preachers, Dominicans are called to follow in Dominic’s footsteps, imitating his mercy and preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ in and out of season. Their life in common, along with their time in study and at prayer, allows them to share the fruits of their contemplation and proclaim the good news to every land and nation. The Dominicans serve at Blessed Sacrament parish in Seattle and the Newman Center at the University of Washington. The Benedictine Nuns of the Primitive Observance live at Our Lady of the Rock Priory on Shaw island. The motto of the Order of Saint Benedict, Ora et Labora, is the animating spirit by which the nuns live. Prayer is the first and foundational element of a life lived in total consecration to Jesus Christ. From prayer the rest of the day flows, finding its vitality, its strength, its purpose, and its apostolic fruitfulness. The nuns at Our Lady of the Rock strive to witness to God’s presence in the world by offering a place of prayer and hospitality to others in an environment of monastic peace. Guests of all faiths are welcome to pray and work with the nuns, sharing in a part of their lives. The daily schedule is centered on the Eucharist and on the Liturgy of the Hours which is prayed in Latin. Lauds and Vespers are sung in Gregorian Chant as is the Mass, using the Novus Ordo. Coincidentally, I procrastinated on my breviary today. Happy memorial of St. Benedict!

"Just as there exists an evil fervor, a bitter spirit, which divides us from God and leads us to hell, so there is a good fervor which sets us apart from evil inclinations and leads us toward God and eternal life. Monks should put this fervor into practice with an overflowing love:  that is, they should surpass each other in mutual esteem, accept their weaknesses, either of body or of behavior, with the utmost patience; and vie with each other in acceding to requests. No one should follow what he considers to be good for himself, but rather what seems good for another. They should display brotherly love in a chaste manner; fear God in a spirit of love; revere their abbot with a genuine and submissive affection. Let them put Christ before all else; and may he lead us all to everlasting life." ------‐------ Source: Office of Readings for the Wednesday of the 14th Week of Ordinary Time, Second Reading: From the Rule of Saint Benedict, abbot ------‐------ Pic: A Benedictine Rule book and a St. Benedict medal given to me by a good friend, @jpatrickpineda.

We are thrilled to announce the recipients of this year's Lucile Murray Durkin Scholarship, who through the financial support of Sheila Durkin Dierks and her family, will receive a $2,000 award toward advancing their theological education. 📚 Our heartfelt congratulations to: Kate Fontana, a third-year seminarian at the Seattle School of Theology and Psychology; Molly Minnerath, an M.Div. student at Boston College School of Theology and Ministry; and Kori Pacyniak, a second-year Ph.D. student in religious studies at the University of California, Riverside. 🎉 Today we celebrate the courage and resilience of Kate, Molly, and Kori, who walk a prophetic path toward equality.  We challenge our Church to listen to their voices and learn from their experiences. God is calling these inspiring people to lead. Read their full biographies at the link in our bio. #ordainwomen #catholicwomen #catholicfeminist #feminist #womenpriests #scholarship #theology #discernment #vocations #prayforvocations

HAPPY FEAST OF SAINT BENEDICT!!!😊 "For the merit of his life and the wisdom of his doctrine the Lord chose him to be a leader and lawgiver of monks" (Antiphon on the Feast of Our Holy Father Benedict) #lifeinthemonastery #benedictinemonks #prayforvocations

Prayer for Priests Lord Jesus, you have chosen Your priests among us and have sent them to proclaim Your Word and to act in Your Name. For such a great gift to Your Church, we praise You and we thank You. We ask that you fill them with the fire of Your love, that their ministry may reveal Your presence in the Church. Since they are earthen vessels, we pray that your power may work in their weakness. In their afflictions do not let them be crushed; in their doubts, do not let them despair. Iin temptation, do not let them be destroyed. Inspire them through prayer to live each day the mystery of your death and Resurrection. In times of weakness, send them Your Spirit and help them to praise your heavenly Father and to pray for poor sinners. With the same Holy Spirit place your word on their lips and your love in their hearts, that they may bring the Good News to the poor and revive the broken-hearted. Lastly, may the gift of Mary, your mother, to the disciple whom you loved, be your gift to every priest. Grant that she, who formed You in your human image,  may form each priest in Your divine image, through the power of Your Spirit, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Hail Mary, full of grace, the LORD is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Repeat this #prayer as a comment below. List names of Priests you dedicate this #catholic prayer to. #prayforvocations

"You have given me a short span of days; my life is as nothing in your sight. A mere breath, the man who stood so firm, a mere shadow, the man passing by, a mere breath the riches he hoards, not knowing who will have them.” ------‐------ Source: Office of Readings, Psalm 39 Wednesday of the 14th Week of Ordinary Time ------------- After those two earthquakes that hit my town, I realized that the only important thing that we have is life itself (and we don't even own or deserve it), and, with God's love and mercy, what we make of it. When disaster strikes, we flee to safety, and let all our possessions go and be subject to the wrath of the earth. When we die, we take nothing with us of this world, only our deeds which God will judge. All things useless, all things vanity. Pic: Somewhere in Arizona
