The Glute-Ham DL (traditionally referred to as RDL) is what I consider a foundational loaded ‘hip hinge’ variation. Shown here is a slo-mo video of Eccentric-Isometric and then ➡️Swipe ▶️ realtime set with emphasis on the eccentric phase (3-5sec). ➖ ☑️With very few exceptions, every McConnellAthletics athlete or Fitness client has this exercise in their program. 🔺The tools used include kettlebells, barbell, dumbbells, trap Bar (as seen in these videos), Pulley, Bands, sandbag, etc ➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖➖ ☑️The key to experiencing the benefits while eliminating/minimizing undue stress to the spine is finding the optimal tool and position for ‘your’ body type and then being ‘consistent’ in those mechanics rep by rep, every set. 🔺Sustaining a ‘neutral spine’ is the primary objective and there are cues that will be specific to the individual rather than just “keep your back flat”. 🔺As example, I’ve found the majority of the faster, more explosive athletes (as well as offensive linemen in football) tend to be hyper-lordotic and when you cue them “back flat” they will hyperextend in the lumbar and loaded hip hinge movements (DL) will exasperate an already-problematic issue. ➖ 🔺In this case, a pre-set drill (can be plank or hollow variation) that “sets” pelvis into slight posterior tilt and an activation drill for the lats (i.e. Band Straight-Arm Pulldown) will resolve this leading into the set of a DL variation. 🔺the cues of “ribcage down”, “take a punch”, or “brace” can be effective for those with pronounced lordosis and/or in anterior pelvic tilt. ➖ ✅Practice this application with very low load until you ‘own’ the mechanics. As with ‘every’ exercise, prioritize kinesthetic efficiency.

Romanian Deadlifts Hands up if you struggle with this movement 👋 When new clients first learn hinging at the hips (which is necessary for a well executed RDL) many people struggle with the feeling that they are going to fall backwards. If this is you instead of focusing on keeping the weight in your heels focus on keeping your weight directly over the mid foot. By doing this as you can see from these pics it will allow the hips to push back more and the chest to come down more which will act as a counter balance to the hips pushing back and stop you from feeling as though you are going to fall back. Other keys things to remember with a RDL ✅Push the hips back ✅Squeeze the armpits (to maintain a tight upper back); ✅Maintain a Vertical Shin; and ✅Keep your knees soft through the movement. My last tip with the RDL if you are someone who struggles to hinge at the hips is to tuck your chin to your chest.

Romanian Deadlifts increase mobility in your hips due to the straighter leg position.
