Relative strength testing. A display of strength relative to your body weight. A great way to test this, that I’ve taken from @drjohnrusin is the goblet squat challenge. Grab 50% of your body weight and knock out 25 consecutive reps. Can’t do it? Either get less weak, or less fat...or both. An early season favourite - the deficit snatch grip deadlift. ... Goal is to work up to 170kg for 2x5 next week (165kg this week). Ok for a skinny guy (don't get #calfenvy everyone!). ... I use these for a couple of reasons. The first is it's something different to just deadlifting (which I'll move into next phase). Second, the extra range of motion makes conventional deads from the floor feel much easier. For your average person and beginner in fitness, the BMI is actually a simple and effective guide to what weight you will want to be at. Many people with a lean, athletic, muscular body actually weigh less than you think. A BMI between 22-25 with relatively low body fat is going to be the range you are looking for (excluding people with large bone structure, very tall, or have very high muscle mass). If you are in that 22-25 BMI range, focus on reducing body fat through gaining strength through weight and bodyweight training (build lean muscle mass) and cleaning up your diet (no liquid sugars, high protein diet). Absolute and Relative Strength VIDEO 1- Relative Strength is the amount of force exerted in relation to bodyweight. It is basically the amount of weight lifted divided by your own bodyweight. A good identification of relative strength is a dip as it is a bodyweight movement. VIDEO 2- Absolute Strength is the amount of force exerted regardless of body size. Absolute Strength is basically the amount of weight you can move irrespective of your body weight. So the big guy might have great absolute strength, but how does his relative strength match up? Absolute strength is clearly important in increasing strength and power but do not neglect the importance of relative strength. Implement both into your training. 100kg guy lifting 250kg or an 80kg guy lifting 220kg? Who is stronger? 100kg guy doing 5 dips or a 80kg guy doing 6?
