CHUG, CHUG, CHUG! What I think pretty much every time Archer steals my smoothie and gulps down as much as he can before I notice and take it back. * I'm glad at least one of my kids still likes drinking green smoothies in the morning. They're both picky in their own ways. Most kids are. And to be 100% honest, this is the kid who also likes to lick all of the jam off of his toast and leave the bread, so there's also that. * My biggest stressor is always to do with food and meal times. I struggled with eating disorders and body image issues through my twenties. I'm healthier than ever and the last thing I want to do is transfer my former eating drama onto my kids. And yet, our biggest arguments happen around food. * Milly is super picky. She only likes to eat bread and jam, rice and peas, apples, strawberries, and lollipops. She also has a tendency to like something for a day or 3 and then suddenly decide she never wants to eat it again. It's frustrating and exhausting. What's worse is that Archer wants to be exactly like his sister, so if she refuses something, he usually does, too. Even if he just ate 5 bites of it. Even if it's his favorite thing to eat. * Yesterday I got into a huge ugly immature fight with my daughter about food. I could see myself from outside of myself while it happened and couldn't stop what I was doing, even though I knew what I should have done. Sigh. Live. Learn. Repeat. * So today I am consciously reminding myself that I can't control my kids. I can only control myself. And only slightly at that, but at least I have a better shot. I've employed all of the skills I have to move forward feeling good about myself, good about my choices, and good about my mothering. I'm working on looking at my stress response and my triggers, then coming up with healthier solutions. I'm trying to go with the flow when it comes to mealtime, instead of picking fights. I'm making sure to take care of myself so I don't feel like the only one not getting her needs met. I'm giving myself a little extra quiet time during the day to pause and consider and process and reflect. And I'm working on managing my energy and (cont in comments)

During the "Raising Liberated Children" workshop at a California's women prison, the partipants created a collective poem inspired by Maya Angelou's poem "Still I Rise." At the final workshop, we printed their powerful words with this beautiful design for them to keep. After passing out their poem, we then gathered in a circle and each participant took turns reading a stanza out loud together. A room full of mothers who are incarcerated raised their voices together and affirmed themselves, "I rise, I rise, I rise!" It was a soulful way to end our workshop and we are sharing their poem because their words will continue to reverberate outside the prison walls and call us to action. Listen to @chicanamotherwork and @parentingforliberation discuss the making of the collective poem on podcast 11 (link in bio) and read their collective poem on the blog at chicanamotherwork.com/blog . . . . . . #stillirise #mayaangelou #incarceratedmothers #poetry #communalhealing #parentsofcolor #mothersofclor #chicanamotherwork #supportbrownpodcasts #podsincolor #intergenerationaltrauma #intergenerationalresilience #revolutionarymothering #socialjustice #reproductivejustice

These words are taken from #revolutionarymothering edited by @alexispauline , which is expanding my mind in infinite directions around the act of mothering, my relationship to mothering as a white cis female, and how many patriarchal constructs have been applied to this revolutionary work. Mother is not a gender identity it is love in action - SHAKTI!!! I’m so grateful for the artists in this world who wake me up, clear the fog, and rip down walls. Research in both my lineages - Korean and Boricua - foods, practices, communal support that nourish me and babe now, during birth, and postpartum. "Mothering" day 9 out of 29. Whenever I was sick growing up, Okaasan would make me okayusan (wait I just realized that okayusan is only one Japanese letter different than Okaasan!) with umeboshi in this ceramic pot. I've been sick for the past two+ days eating sooo much okayu out of the same bowl (Okaasan almost gave the bowl away!) I left in the test color strokes at the bottom because mothering is messy and yet it's expected to be flawless and whenever it's not, people wanna look away. After reading #revolutionarymothering I'm swimming in a sea of thoughts, emotions and sensations about mothering. #mothering #twentyninezine #kellyandmiyuki #okayusan #お粥さん #お粥 #congee

My final recommendation is another #union based book. Although what our #youth did today was a #walkout for #gunreformnow and not union organizing, a lot of the strategies covered in this book are similar to what #emmagonzales and past #youthactivists have used to #agitate to the point of getting policy makers to make the necessary changes to create more just laws. This book I love because it’s the story of #justiceforjanitors in Los Angeles ❤️. It #educates children on the power of #organizedstruggle. #revolutionarymothering #childrensbooks #teachin #literacy #literacyisfreedom #janitorstrike #union #educate #agitate #sisepuede #nationalwalkoutday

This is a bio of #emmatenayuca and her work with the Texas #farmworkers. I love how the narrator describes her reaction each time she sees an #injustice. She gets a “look in her dark eyes” and you just now that look is anger and indignation. 👊 This is another great book to help preschoolers understand concepts like #organizing #strikes and #protesting. I love that this book features #women #pocprotagonist. And for my children, #emmatenayuca has a bit of a legacy as one of their grandmother’s great friends wrote this book, the poet #carmentafolla. And #emmatenayuca was actually their great-aunt’s middle school English teacher. #revolutionarymothering #boardbook #teachin #literacy #literacyisfreedom #clickclackmoo #union #educate #agitate #nationalwalkoutday

This is a bio of #cesarchavez and his work with the California #farmworkers. This book is better for #preschoolers who can sit still a little bit longer. It teaches the concepts of #injustice, #fairwages, #farmworkersrights, #organizing, #boycott. In honor of the work our youth did today for #nationalwalkoutday for #gunreformnow, this is a story you can read to your little one as a way to participate in today’s national dialogue. #revolutionarymothering #childrensbook #teachin #literacy #literacyisfreedom #harvestinghope #union #educate #agitate #pocprotagonist #childrenofcolor #sisepuede

This delightful book is about cows that successfully organize to get better living conditions. I thought in my post, I would recommend #childrensbooks for #toddlers and #preschoolers that would help them understand concepts like #organizing, #collectivebargaining , #walkout, and #protest. Toddlers and preschoolers may not be able to participate in a walk out but something we can do as a form of participation is hold a teach-in with our little ones and help them understand concepts that will give them the tools to be #youngactivists. I really want to honor the work our youth did for us today to push for #gunreformnow and to tell politicians and the NRA that #enoughisenough. Today’s #youthledmovement followed in the tradition of the many successful youth-led movements that have helped this country propel forward. #radicalnaturalmothering #revolutionarymothering #boardbook #teachin #literacy #literacyisfreedom #clickclackmoo #union #educate #agitate

Children understand way more than we give them credit for. When we teach them about #feminism, let’s not simplify it to only a discussion about the impacts on #gender. Though #chauvinism and #equalrights are large issues, teaching #childrenofcolor about #feminism needs to be more #intersectional. #radicalnaturalmothering #revolutionarymothering #intersectionalfeminism #bellhooks #feministparenting #mothersofcolor #nonbinaryparentsofcolor #childrenofcolor

•Saint Marsha of Christopher Street• I have struggled with what to say about mother Marsha. Yet as we celebrate #womenshistorymonth & a leading voice in the gay community shares trash transphobic opinions about trans drag queens, I think of Marsha. As we reach historic levels of anti-trans violence OVERWHELMINGLY centered on #transwomenofcolor, I think of Marsha. I have just finished a book called #revolutionarymothering that argues the inherent queerness & radicalness of mothering. I think of Marsha. I think of . . . •Her co-founding STAR and STAR House as shelters for homeless trans & queer youth, the first of their kind, in NYC. •I think of “the shot glass heard round the world,” and Marsha’s role in the six days of #stonewallriots - what she did, what she’s rumored to have done, what we have forgotten or erased. •I think of her direct action resisting police, publicly protesting, protesting clinics & hospitals, risking jail beatings & worse to give #powertothepeople •I think of her death, ruled a suicide over the cries of her loved ones who have KNOWN it was murder. How many decades it took to get her case reopened. •I think of her flower crowns & weaves, her sequins & her megawatt smile. •How she was a muse of #andywarhol •Her career as an avant-garde drag queen with the #hotpeaches touring internationally. I remember “no pride for some of us until there is liberty for all of us.” I thank the forebearers and foremothers and aunties. I light a candle. For you, Marsha. Saint of Christopher Street. •Mothering, radically defined, is the glad gifting of one’s talents, ideas, intellect, and creativity to the universe without recompense.• Revolutionary Mothering: Love On the Front Lines. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book uplifted, informed, inspired, terrified, motivated, educated, & altered me. Its definition of motherhood reminded me of the pagan trinity of Maiden, Mother, & Crone as lifestages, it gave me perspective & historical information about mothering for women wildly unlike me, it rearranged my ideas of “radical” “family” “mother” & more. We’re blessed to be gifted a lot of books for our little ones. When we get the chance to buy them ourselves, we are intentional about getting books with #poc protagonists or by POC children’s authors. This book I love because large concepts like #segregation and #protest are made accessible to infants and toddlers.
