It is important to address this given that many folx are interested in learning from WOC about anti-bias work. Now, this may seem like a simple concept, but the truth is that we don't always get it, respect. So, I have a request to make to help you learn from & interact with us. I've taught anti-bias courses for 10+ years & have much to pass on. This is difficult work. WOC, are often targets of attacks for teaching this. It is bc folx become defensive & triggered. Now, it is normal to feel anxiety & anger when being confronted with the realities of white supremacy & patriarchy. It is bc you experience cognitive dissonance. Your beliefs about the world are being challenged with new evidence & you experience mental & emotional discomfort. And, bc our world has negative unconscious biases towards WOC, folx feel it is OK to direct that anger at us. The world is accustomed to abusing us, objectifying us, silencing us. Folx are OK with us being maids, nannys, assistants, & entertainers, but not OK with us being in positions of power or as holders of knowledge. So, folx discount our credibility & expertise, & even attack us. But, we are worthy of your respect, period. Even & ESPECIALLY when you don't like what we are saying. My request is that when you feel triggered & defensive, that you really stop & think about why that is. Why is this truth of racism & sexism making me feel attacked? What privilege is this forcing me to face? White privilege? Male privilege? Why am I having a hard time accepting this truth? What unearned power am I fighting to keep? Why is the truth of white supremacy & patriarchy so difficult for me to accept? What reality am I forced to face? Why is my colonial mentality so stubborn? Why am I wanting to hold on to the illusion of the 'American dream' & 'equality', when it is clear they are just illusions not based in reality? &, finally, why is it so easy for me to disrespect, attack, & dismiss a WOC? Why am I having a hard time accepting what she is teaching me? What does this say about me & our society that we are so quick to discount & attack womxn of color? &, how can I begin to work through that? Thank you, Dr. Rosales Meza

If you haven't rocked the world enough for your liking, nurture the next generation that will do. They will carry on your heritage, strength, wisdom, legacy and consciousness. This is us when 1. Someone shushes us in church 2. Someone tuts at our crumbs 3. Someone judges my decision of giving my son a snack in their car (and doesn't appreciate I'm 3 steps ahead in preventing an apocalypse) 4. Someone whisks my little person up into the air unnecessarily for "safety" or just because he's small. 5. Someone speaks to my little man in a silly babble or flaps into his personal space demanding hugs and kisses. 6. When (usually budget) crew get inpatient with us when we don't strap into our seat belts 30 minutes before take-off, aircraft ain't even taxi-ing yet. 7. ***Add your parenting pet peeve here! But my villagers, you exist. You will lead him out of danger, you will tell him right from wrong, you will hold space til my attention reverts, you will stop him from scooting into traffic, you will love my kids like I love yours as they will be sharing and co-creating the same world when we are gone. If you bully him, your kid may turn out fine but use all his taxes to pay for his social services and prison paradise. 😂 ・・・ 'I am deliberate and afraid of nothing.' Let's change the conversation. Motherhood is not to be feared. Motherhood is not a burden. Motherhood doesn't take away our strengths, that is the patriarchy & colonialism talking. Motherhood expands our strengths and gives rise to even greater ones. Motherhood is a call to love, grow, & nurture beyond what you thought was possible. It's an invitation to co-create. It's a call to be a warrior of love. It is a call to liberate and raise free people. You thought your life was over? No, it is just beginning. Motherhood forces you to make room for what matters, to carry out your higher purpose. Motherhood allows you to play, in a world that just wants work. Motherhood is teaching & learning. Leading & following. Giving peace, making peace, & wishing for peace. Mother is a noun and a verb. It is Femme, Black, Brown, Indigenous, Queer, Trans, dis-able bodied, & childless. To mother is to be more tired than you ever knew, but stronger than you ever imagined, and more full of love than you can even comprehend. Motherhood is a rebirth, a transformation, an invitation to radical love. It is learning to be fierce and gentle at the same time. It is a call to nurture, embolden, and organize. I'm here for the revolution, are you? It’s all about the angle! Look how huge and fantastic and beautiful my pregnancy belly looks! And then when lying down I’m like “BUT WHERE IS IT??” and when I feel Eliana kick (and holy crap they kick hard!) I’m like “whatever, as long as my baby is good!” and again when looking sideways it looks a whole other size and completely different from when naked. Pregnancy makes zero sense. I love it. I’ve wanted to take this picture since forever. Whatever angle, the belly does come handy when needing to hold a covfefe! 😂😂 One thing is certain tho: as a fat person who has lost a lot of weight over the last years, I see absolutely NOWHERE pregnancy pictures or stories I can relate to. Nobody looks like me and certainly I haven’t seen a lot of unapologetic pregnancy bodies. All the pregnancy pics in the media are of skinny people pregnant - and they all complain how huge and fat they are. I’m so sick of it. #31weekspregnant #fatpositivepregnancy #fatactivism #bodyactivism #kehokapina #läskiaktivismi #lihavusaktivismi #raskaana #embarazadxs #pregnancydiaries #chilena #bodypositive #revolutionarymothering #activistmama 📸: @eiteroh

Here are my different hospital faces. I went to the maternity emergency Saturday night with painful contractions to find out that Eliana is apparently in a bit of a hurry to enter this world, but that’s only because they don’t know better yet. Thanks to many amazing things about this country’s education and heath care system (or what’s left of it) and modern medicine, the excellent staff at the hospital @tays_sairaala took such good care of me and monitored my baby, and managed to stop the contractions and reverse the shortening of my birth canal. Eliana is still positioned sort of ready to come out, but here’s hoping they’ll find another position and stay in my womb for at least another month or two. I mean, I’m a human incubator, use me! 😝 Tbh I’ve been scared and worried AF, but those are perfectly understandable emotions in a stressful situation. I managed to get through those days, and now that the worse is over I believe I will get the “aftermath” and feel a bit down for a while. I am now back home with strict instructions to lay down and rest as much as possible. I’m allowed to move a little, like take a shower and prepare my own meals, maybe walk slowly to take out the trash, but apart from that: nothing. No cleaning, no lifting anything, not even doing my own grocery shopping. That means I’m forced to keep learning to ask for help. How about that? It’s not a bad lesson to learn. Both the asking for help and specially the part where people do want to help. I feel so lucky. I feel that sure I don’t have fancy diplomas, a shiny career or my financial situation under control, but I have friends who want to help me. I have my family by my side. I have love. That’s not a bad world that’s waiting for my child, my Eliana. 💜❤️💚💙 #pregnancydiaries #365feministselfie #365feministlife #hyvinvointivaltio #julkinenterveydenhuolto #julkinensektori #tays #synnytysvuodeosasto #kätilötyö #kätilöt #grateful #revolutionarymothering #fatpositivepregnancy #chilena #septumwoman #selfie #pregnant #embarazadxs #friendshipgoals

After a week that included more swastika spray paint, 7-year-old Jakelin Maquin dying of dehydration and shock in the hands of border control, and a bomb threat to students at Sandy Hook Elementary school on the 6th anniversary of the Sandy Hook massacre (with laughable gun reform since then), I'm recommitted to raising a generation that will imagine better for humanity. As Jonita Davis writes in the People's World, "The nature of raising a child in a capitalist society soaked in white supremacy, misogyny, and anti-gay binary attitudes does require making some highly political decisions every day. The choices parents make, the goals they set for their kids, and the hopes they have for their future are all political." . Who’s with me? I absolutely love books because they really do help children & grown folx develop empathy. It opens up whole worlds to us and helps us understand the experiences, dreams, & heartaches of others. 'Somos comos las nubes/we are like the clouds' is an #ownvoices must have. My heart hurts just seeing the pictures & reading the collection of poems. This is real life. And, we must not turn a blind eye to human injustice & suffering just because it makes us uncomfortable & we'd rather sit in our privilege. Yes, rest when you need & do all the self care you need, especially if you are triggered. But, I also want to challenge you to use your voice & your power to stop these atrocities. We must also educate our children, or they grow up & become oppressors themselves. Our silence, our 'neutrality', sides with the oppressor. There are way too many Hispanics out here (and I'm using this word intentionally), that are against their own people. Hispanics who came from families that are immigrants too, but then close the proverbial door behind them. There are also many folx who don't understand that this is both a Black & Brown issue. Afro-Latinxs exist in our home countries & in the U.S. And, we also have African & Haitian refugees & undocumented immigrants. This is also a queer & trans issue. Queer & trans refugees flee their home countries because their literal lives are at stake. They will be killed if they go back home. Let us stand together. Don't let them divide us. They want to divide & conquer and they what us to fight over a sliver of pie, rather than give us more of the pie. I am not free while others are oppressed. Let us not forget this & let us educate our children to create a more just & peaceful future. Sending you love, peace y fuerza, ✊🏼💖 a proud daughter of immigrants, Dr. Rosales Meza #drrosalesmeza #drmami #phdmami #solidarity #activism #socialjustice #raisingthefuture #antibias #refugees #migrationisahumanright #blacklivesmatter #loveislove #transisbeautiful #refugeecaravan #xicana #latinx #santaana #blackandbrown #unity #liberation #kidsbookstagram #kidlit #libros #librosparaniños #socialjusticeparenting #revolutionarymothering

Current read: Revolutionary Mothering. This book is epic. So good, real, full of love, insight, perseverance and strength. Showing me all the ways I can both relate and identify with the experience of mothers who have less privilege than I do, as well as highlighting the ways my privilege renders their experience completely foreign to me. Big privilege check, while at the same time I feel really seen and validated and inspired reading these essays and poems. Deepening my focus on parenting as radical activism, through raising conscious, critically thinking kids who are aware of the system within which they live and who can critique it, and who ideally can retain their creativity and ingenuity native to youth as they age and mature, and use that to envision and create a more just world. Inspiring me to get more connected with local activist communities, to not see my children as limitation on that endeavor, but as participants who can both take part and contribute. #revolutionarymothering #revolutionarymotheringloveonthefrontlines Thanks @mystiquebazaar for the excellent recommendation 💓

Sure, you raised me RIGHT-- trust no one can undo My friend Always there, early in the morning for intellectual conversation almost like childhood prayers Mah, momM, Maaaaa, ma-ok... I can call on that name--the power and job is never in vain And always your baby, (can't change it though even when it drives me crazy. I am grateful for today I am grateful to have to say, while the breath is in your lungs And though life may have sang sad songs Happy Birthday!! Is the lyric for today It's worth the trip-- It worth the dips and turns The lessons you have learned It's take some tears and pain Loses and some gains But you cant say you aren't equipped As you told me, don't you quit So honor your life-journey Blow out the candles on this year Inhale and breathe out and make it clear Holding on to memories, both old and new And remember to do what you do. On January 1, 2018 I casually made a pledge to read 100 books this year, no rereads. It didn’t seem so high, but I got a little depressed in June and realized I accidentally spent over a month mooning over two of my favourite books of poetry- not unusual for me, but the year was suddenly half over and I was only a third of the way to my goal. I didn’t know if I could do it but I wanted to. I’m so humbled to say that today I finished my 100th book of 2018 and it was absolutely beautiful. These are my top 9 books of the year so far, although there were many others I loved as well. I got to remember how I never feel more like myself than when I have an amazing book on the go that I can’t wait to keep reading- except for maybe in that moment after I’ve finished an amazing book and just want to gush enthusiastically about how great it was. I wanna say I’m proud but mostly I’m just fucking grateful these books came into my life, and that my mental health has been sound enough for me to log and review them. It has meant the world to me. #booklover #goodreads #goodreadschallenge #bookworm #sappy #thecoreofthesun #americansonnetsformypastandfutureassassin #circe #monstress #terranullius #florasegunda #binti #thefifthsacredthing #revolutionarymothering

I haven’t said much about the zine Raina, Alex, China, and I have been working on...cuz I’ll be nervous and jittery til the final copy is in my hands. But I made this little shrine for it, featuring gifts and a few treasured things. MATERNAL JOURNAL, a publication of Artist Mother Studio, launches this Saturday at our conference (attendees receive a free copy). It is pictured here in draft form, bottom right of table, open to Megan Wynne’s image “In Utero.” This zine is hot hot fire 🔥 and can’t wait to share it on Saturday. Meet China Martens, AMS Conference participant, author, and zinestress extraordinaire. At the Conference this Saturday, China will lead a zine workshop and talk about her zine, The Future Generation, the longest running zine on raising kids. Participants will discuss the importance of community support for mothers, particularly marginalized mothers, as well as caregivers and others in order to access media making. There will also be a hands-on component to create a zine together that participants will take home with them . China Martens is based in Baltimore. Her first book, The Future Generation: The Zine-Book for Subculture Parents, Kids, Friends & Others, is a compilation of sixteen years of her first zine. She is also the co-editor of Don't Leave Your Friends Behind: Concrete Ways to Support Families in Social Justice Movements and Communities and Revolutionary Mothering: Love on the Front Lines. Since 2003, China has facilitated workshops to support for parents and children in activist and radical communities. In 2009, she co-founded Kidz City, a radical childcare collective in Baltimore. . Don't miss the AMS Conference this Saturday, November 3 from 10am-6pm at Howard University's Interdisciplinary Research Building (2201 Georgia Ave NW) for the Artist Mother Studio (AMS) Conference. * * * I want to introduce you to my baby, they are called Eliana! They are the fourth Eliana, the first was my grandma Eliana de las Mercedes, the second my Mom Silvia Eliana and me the third Javiera Eliana. Eliana is a fine little baby, excellent looking everything from their brain, heart to kidneys, bladder, bones and all. They know how to facepalm. Very important. * * * Saanko esitellä: Eliana! Hän on neljäs Eliana suvussani. Hän on 20-25cm pitkä ja painaa noin 350 grammaa. Hänellä on upeat aivot, elimet, luut ja kaikki. Hän osaa facepalmata. Ultraäänitutkimuksen loppupuolella häntä vähän meinasi väsyttää ja rupesi pötköttelemään pää istukkaa vasten. Istukkahan on, kuten tiedämme, tärkeä vauvan kannalta. Koska se on hyvä tyyny. @birthingfromwithin reminds us that we often celebrate the birth of babies and forget that mothers, too, are born. Imagine the culture shift around birth if we put our energies into honoring mothers as much we do babies. Today is the anniversary of my Mother Shower. My heart grew that day. Come thru, support, and soak up all the truth & light & love. . . . “I’m learning all the time that oppression creates false choices. That good and bad are not universal good and bad, because we cannot always be the ones left with ‘bad’ choices. So I am no longer concerned with good or bad. Only what is untrue and what is true, what is made ugly by falsehood or made beautiful by being truthful.” (Farzana Khan). . . #revolutionarymothering #stayingalive #writer #pocarts #justice #healing #repair #oppression #community #transformative

Did you know that this Sunday is a day that many multi-faith communities celebrate “Children’s Sabbath,” a day focusing prayers, worship, education and action learning about the urgent problems facing our nation’s children with the goal of calling us to explore new ways to improve the lives of children everywhere? . Children’s Sabbath comes from the Children’s Defense Fund, of which Marian Wright Edelman is the Director. . @middlechurch in the East Village practices Children’s Sabbath, & I’ll be part of the worship - preaching about how children are our next best hope to reconcile this world. I’ll probably throw in some imagination & revolutionary mothering brilliance thanks to @alexispauline too. I’d love for you come! 9:30 or 11:45 this Sunday 10/21 - more at middlechurch.org. . Do you have a favorite Marian Wright Edelman quote? Are you familiar with Children’s Sabbath? What is your community doing to honor it? “When I see or hear or read scarcity thinking, it makes me want to reach out to those who propagate it and tell them about my home and how I came to be here. Because there is enough of everything we need here, in spite of how we struggle. It makes me want to tell them about the mother in Powderhorn Park. Because there is enough love in that community to heal the mother who was raped, to heal her children who witnessed the assault and to heal the boys who attacked her. I do believe this. It makes me also want to tell them about the legislation on accommodating breastfeeding mothers. Because there is also enough space and resources for an agency that employs fifty people or more to have a room for a breastfeeding mother to express milk in private, so that she can still give her child the best start in life, in spite of having to or choosing to work outside of the home. That is not a belief-that is physical reality. And I have learned that if I am going to change someone's mind with a story, it must be a story of abundance. . Scarcity reinforces fear. Abundance ignites the imagination." . Which do you choose? 💖 . Without women there isn’t a revolution. A great friend sent me ‘revolutionary mothering’ #revolutionarymothering edited by Alexis Pauline Gumbs, China Martens and Mai’a Williams after giving birth to my son. It resonated very deeply. After not feeling welcomed as a new mom into the community work and activism I was doing lightly in Denver I was reminded about the radical wide spread communities of moms who transformed their communities incorporating their motherhood. I owe a lot of inspiration to this book which was inspired by the legacy of radical and queer black feminists in the 1970s and 1980s. I think all of us forget, often, that our voice, our radical actions and words and influence can exist with our motherhood and actually, our motherhood and the way we mother is and can be the transformation we want to see in the world. What a revolutionary act birth and motherhood/parenthood is. Sometimes I get very discouraged with the amount of work that has to be done and then, while finding those silent moments with my son I am pulled back into the present, where all the answers are so very simple. Mothering happens in the context of generations, in the context of generational transformation, in the context of resistance. I’m really feeling my mama wisdom tonight ✨🌺and thinking about so many badass, radical, revolutionary moms who build and remain accountable to the future ✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿#humblestonight #tunningin #wisdom #revolutionaryparenting #revolutionarymothering #raiseuptogether #justanotherbadassmom

I JUST UNDERSTOOD SOMETHING INCREDIBLE! It goes like this: fuck what SIZE my pregnant belly “SHOULD” be at this time of my pregnancy. It should be exactly what it is now. As I tried pregnancy pants for the first time I almost cried how comfortable they are, it hit me: I am ALLOWED to be comfortable and not have to wear pants that are too tight. #for fucks sake I AM PREGNANT. I look like this right now. It’s part what my belly looks right now and part previous fatness and excess skin from weight loss. It’s all combined. IT IS ALL GOOD. Yes, this requires caps. If I could, it would be bold and in cursive. I am the size I am right now. Every pregnant person (yes, PERSON! Women, men, non-binary, genderless, you name it(yourself)) looks different at different times of their pregnancy. Some have bigger, some smaller bellies. Other are more visible, more round, whatever. All are good. All are right. Including me, including what I was before pregnancy and what I am now. And I am not wearing uncomfortable clothes ever again. Fuck that. My pregnancy, while it might feel it’s taking forever, is still too short for uncomfortable clothes or useless self shaming and internalised fat phobia. This is me, this pregnant, right now. Imma ENJOY IT. #embarazadxs #maaliskuiset2019 #fatpositivepregnancy #fatpregnancy #fatactivism #18weekspregnant #raskaana #raskausviikko18 #pregnantdiaries #revolutionarymothering #revolutionarypregnancy #365feministselfie #365feministlife #septumwoman #chilena #embarazadas #embarazada

One of the most meaningful projects that I've done this past year is the Raising Liberated Workshop workshop series with @parentingforliberation and Just Detention International for mothers who are incarcerated at a California women's prison. We co-developed a curriculum that wove together healing intergenerational trauma, social justice, women of color feminism, revolutionary mothering, and the power of storytelling through poetry and art. We met incredibly resilient mothers who are mothering from prison and beyond, who trusted us and each other with their stories of surivival and preservance and dreams for themselves and their families and futures. If you'd like to learn more about this project, check out the podcast (link in bio). If all goes well, we will be back for another Raising Liberated Children workshop series at the same prison and we hope to keep nurturing this work and the relationships with incarcerated mothers over time. This is just the beginning. Super pumped to start this residency with my fellow art moms at @wpadc today! #latergram. #repost @wpadc with @get_repost ・・・ Artist Mother Studio (AMS) seeks to shift the conversation around motherhood to broaden its definition beyond that of a universalist white paternalism to an understanding of it as the conditioning of a world to come. For nine weeks, WPA will function as an artist residency with childcare. AMS will conclude with a mini-conference and a zine on November 3. The project has been organized by DC artist Amy Hughes Braden, with the participation of three artists—Leah Lewis, Katherine Tzu-Lan Mann, and Anne Smith—and their four children, who range in age from several months to 3 years. Braden hopes AMS will elevate the voices of artist mothers/caregivers and continue important conversations about communal labor and how mothers can leverage their experiences for positive social change. But most of all, AMS foregrounds the dependency and entanglement of being a caregiver (a loss, in a traditional sense, of personal freedom) as a generative position from which to create art . . . #drivenbyartists #artistmotherstudio #artistmoms #caregiving #invisiblelabour #itwontalwaysbethisway #futuregeneration #revolutionarymothering #artistinresidence #dcartists @hughesbraden @leahleww @ktzulan @anne.c.smith

⚜️🐉🦋COSMIC MOTHER, DIVINE DAUGHTER CODES🦋🐉⚜️ The summer eclipses ignited an even deeper commitment to bridging the mystic and mundane within my life. The sacred Holy Family codes permeated thoroughly and have been activating and carrying us into new paths that are so full and fertile with possibility. For my daughter and I that has unfolded as a new adventure in ✨HOMESCHOOLING✨ this year. We are so excited to explore all the rich curriculum for homeschooling/unschooling and to create an emergent education that reflects and embodies my most deeply cherished spiritual, environmental and social values that weren’t being shared in the school system. Did you know that the modern schooling systems were developed to create factory workers?!?! This is not what I want for my daughter or for any child on Gaia. With this choice, I claim sovereignty as a Mother, that I know best for my daughter. I claim sovereignty to guide her into becoming a woman on her own sacred soul terms. I claim sovereignty to trust myself and my wisdom over that of the machine and distorted illusions so that she too will grow into a woman trusting herself, cherishing her body, knowing it as a sacred temple of truth. I claim sovereignty as a Revolutionary Queen and Mother to teach my daughter according to and in attunement with the Divine Laws of nature. I guard her holy feminine maiden essence and support her in her brilliant path into sensual, wise and loving womanhood in all ways. I anchor this in devotion to the Holy Family Light Codes, in service to the Highest and Deepest good of all beings everywhere. I link this choice to empower and support not only my daughter and myself, but all girl- children and their mothers everywhere. Our children are our greatest legacy, they are the future of Gaia, they are living embodiment of the dream of Golden Dawn. May all children be happy. May all children be free, May all children know their sacred origin and be nurtured and celebrated for the radiant Divine Gifts of Grace that they are. So Mote it Be! 🐉🦋⚜️In devotion to the Divine Cosmic Mother and Daughter Codes, All Avalon Love, Always, Holly Rhiannon 🐉⚜️💙

Motherhood is an act of defiance in the midst of colonization. -Dana Erekat I’m so thankful I found this book very early in my mothering journey. I used to be at a place of fear, constantly reacting to the brutalization of Black bodies by police and vigilantes with unconscious self-hate thinking I would never birth a son into a world like this one. How could I? Then I learned that my giving birth to him is the most powerful act of resistance I could ever do. Now I’m two up with an attitude like I wish somebody would. The war is on the womb of Black women. Birth by any means necessary. This is my revolution. Love is the revolution. I’m thankful for the mothers in this book for inspiring me still. #revolutionarymothering
