All the kids making astute, insightful observations at #intoaction They are so much more perceptive and conscious than we ever give them credit for. These pieces have spurred on a lot of great conversations with my son. #artivism #radicalnaturalmothering #revolutionarymothering #artasactivism #feministparenting #intersectionalfeminism #blacklivesmatter

“The radical potential of the word “mother comes after the “m”. It is the space that “other” takes in our mouths when we say it. We are something else. We know it from how fearfully institutions wield social norms and try to shut us down”. #niecyslibrary #revolutionarymothering

It’s amazing to see the little toddler he’s growing in to, the tantrums, the fussy nights, and teething...it’s all worth it (even if it doesn’t seem like it in moments that require more patience on my part). Everyday he is a constant reminder to be mindful of the present moment. My intelligent little baby is growing so fast. I’ve been finding myself getting sad that we’re no longer nursing, cut short only because of my current pregnancy. I’m proud that we breastfed for 14months but I surely miss my little hand-baby. — I didn’t have an end goal for our breastfeeding journey. For the next little one, I think I’ll be more specific about how and how long we’ll be nursing. It was very convenient to have been able to bring Messiah to work with me for a full year. Pumping has never been my thing, so I’ll have to be more creative with generating income & exclusively breastfeeding. — What plans have you made for feeding your baby? A simple question but definitely something to think about and discuss with your partner before your baby arrives. Expectant moms, new and seasoned mamas, I would love to hear about your feeding journeys and what factors influenced your decisions. In the end, do what’s best for you and your family. . . . #breastfeeding #breastfeedingmama #pregnantdoula #doulablog #blackmomblog #revolutionarymotherhood #revolutionarymothering #exclusivelybreastfeeding #breastmilk #breastfeedingtoddler #blacklove #blackbaby #blackfamilylife

Each year, on the first day of school, I share with my students a metaphor for emotional safety in the classroom. I describe for them one of my favourite childhood memories of being at a theme park and experiencing what came to represent for me THE epitome of joy– the BOUNCY CASTLE! * * * I explain that in the bouncy castle (like the enclosed trampoline pictured above) you are free to experiment with movement, take risks you would never consider taking on pavement, challenge yourself and your peers in playfulness not competition. In a bouncy castle, you don’t mind being pushed by a friend because you know that the act comes with the wish for you to experience something novel, something exhilarating. And even as you try to recover your balance, breathlessly you plead, “PUSH ME AGAIN!” * * * The metaphor appeals to the imaginations of my young students by asking them to consider how their lives might change if they knew they had a SOFT PLACE TO LAND. * * * And while little Black girls and boys are busy imagining the heroics they will perform in life, M/others of the Movement are busy dismantling systems as rigid as concrete so that their children might only know soft landings. Bless them. 🙏🏾❤️🙌🏾 * * * #motheringinthemovement #motherhood #mothering #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothering #motherslove #documentaryfilm #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #directher #blackwriters #documentaries #bwphoto #blackgirlmagic #blackchildhood #childhood @matermea @blackmomsblog @blackmomsconnection @blackgirlsrock

TW: intergenerational trauma discussed * * Intergenerational trauma is real. We don't need studies to understand that pain knows no bounds. It's not a stretch to grasp that the nutrient-rich blood we shared with our mothers contained the residue of her traumas. Oftentimes, our mothers are too close to the edge of that pain to help us appreciate the possibility of healing. Grandmothers however, one generation removed (yet wholly present), are beautifully positioned to help guide us. They gently pull us back from the precipice of pain and teach us how to see with new eyes. A dark chasm bridged by a grandmother's love. Her alchemical methodologies transforming past hurts into joy. * * This is what most excites me about making this film. I get to bear witness to the many ways mothers, grandmothers, and all those who mother transform lives, subvert systems of oppression, perform miracles, promote healing, instil joy. * * #motheringinthemovement #mothering #grandmother #granddaughters #grandmothering #mothers #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothering #documentaryfilm #docs #nfb #community #blackmoms #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #womendirectors #directher #blacklivesmatter #blackmomsmatter #blacklove

That moment you realize you didn't get enough pics of baby's 1st Birthday celebration because you were too busy mom-ing. Here's one for the books though. The nightcap to a wonderful week long celebration. I'm so grateful to be his mom, a mom. This one year and one week has been nothing short of sweet and utterly blissful, with a shit load of lessons. So grateful. . . . #1yearold #birthdaybaby #mommyblog #breastfeedingincolor #revolutionarymotherhood #birthingblackbabies #blacklove #blog #blackfamily #happybrownbaby #visionboard2018 #manifestation #revolutionarymothering #birthdoula #childbirtheducator #doulablog #blackdoulasmatter #birthstory #naturalbirth #unassistedhomebirth #freebirth #blacklove #blackbabies #blackfamilies #motherhoodunplugged #doula #futuremidwife #birthwork

This artwork is the reason I chose to do birthwork, or why this path chose me. Birth work in communities of color means way more than just being a doula. It means educating families, changing outcomes, challenging a racist system, and most importantly for me, it means impacting the lives of future generations of black babies. My goal in life is to create, inspire, and empower happy brown babies. Whether it's by reaching and teaching mamas, empowering new families, or giving hugs and kisses to my baby. This work is necessary and it's my revolution. . . . . #revolutionarymotherhood #birthingblackbabies #blacklove #blog #blackfamily #happybrownbaby #visionboard2018 #manifestation #revolutionarymothering #birthdoula #childbirtheducator #doulablog #blackdoulasmatter #birthstory #naturalbirth #unassistedhomebirth #freebirth #blacklove #blackbabies #blackfamilies #motherhoodunplugged #doula #5monthspregnant #futuremidwife #birthwork

Here’s a peek at the digital vision board I created yesterday (using befunky.com and pics from Pinterest) I’ll be creating more vision boards as the year progresses. Not only was it relaxing to create but it helped me to visualize all the goals I’ve been putting on paper and keeping in my head. I’ll also be creating one for my birth and for specific mommy/family goals that I hope to implement in my life. I found this a lot easier than cutting and glueing from a magazine, plus it’s free— but you can literally create a vision board however you’d like to, for anything you hope to bring forth. What we visualize, we become. I’m excited to see all of these manifest in due time. I’m framing this one & adding it to my meditation space. . . . . #revolutionarymotherhood #birthingblackbabies #blacklove #blog #blackfamily #happybrownbaby #visionboard2018 #manifestation #revolutionarymothering #birthdoula #childbirtheducator #doulablog #blackdoulasmatter #birthstory #naturalbirth #unassistedhomebirth #freebirth #blacklove #blackbabies #blackfamilies #motherhoodunplugged #doula #5monthspregnant #futuremidwife #birthwork

The birth practices of our mothers, our mother’s mother and hers affects our own pregnant bodies and ultimately how we choose to birth and to mother our children. We inherit generational trauma as black women birthing in a society that doesn’t see our bodies only sexualizes them, that can’t conceive our pain, and is strategically set up to make it harder for us to mother healthy babies and raise loving families. The injustice is real. But even more real than that is our ability to birth in spite of. To love in spite of. To give birth, as a black woman, has always been and continues to be a revolutionary act. At #23weekspregnant I can’t help but think about my mom and all the trauma and abuse she may have endured in raising four children. & how she knows very little of the choices she may have had in her births and in the care of her pregnancies. I can’t help but think that if we change the way black children are birthed into this world, many other things will change with it. Like our long term health and the stability of our relationships. I decided a long time ago to heal my womb and to no longer pass down generations of trauma and abuse to my children. A healthy black baby and family, starts with the Mom and blossoms for generations to come. 🌻 . . . #revolutionarymotherhood #birthingblackbabies #blacklove #blog #blackfamily #happybrownbaby #revolutionarymothering #birthdoula #childbirtheducator #doulablog #blackdoulasmatter #birthstory #naturalbirth #unassistedhomebirth #freebirth #blacklove #blackbabies #blackfamilies #motherhoodunplugged #doula #5monthspregnant #futuremidwife #birthwork

Sometimes you can actually see the cosmic threads that connect a mother to her child. Whether the “conversation” is a silent tongue-lashing or a tender checking in like the one pictured, there is something so beautiful (not to mention revolutionary) about the wordless language developed between a Black mother and her child. * * * My science nerd theory is that in the face of persistent anti-Black racism, MOC have had to develop this sophisticated communication skill as an evolutionary imperative #survivalofthefittest #mothering #motheringinthemovement #revolutionarymothering #blackmomsblog #blackmothers #motherhood #documentaryfilm #blackwomendirectors #blackwomeninfilm #directher #nfb #docs #blackgirlmagic #blackhair

Becoming a radical and natural parent is a new process. One thing that I️ have tried to stay committed to is feeding the kids fresh, wholesome food. I️t’s much harder to food prep now that I️ have 2 little ones, but tonight I️ got to prep something that I️ initially made for my 1 year old toddler, and that my 4 year old preschooler ended up loving. Cheesy broccoli casserole. Usually, you bake it in ramekins or muffin tins. I️ quadrupled the recipe and realized I️ didn’t have enough muffin tins so rather than bake in rounds, I️ baked it in a glass baking dish. The casserole has brown rice, broccoli, shallot, white mushrooms, and low-sodium chicken broth. What holds it together is the cheese. I️ like to use a Mexican cheese blend because I️ think it kicks the flavor up a notch without having to add salt. You can keep this up to 3 days in the fridge or cut it up and freeze it for up to 3 months. I’m honestly not a natural at cooking. But I️ really love prepping healthy stuff for my kids. And they deserve access to healthy food. #radicalnaturalmothering #foodprep #cheesybroccolicasserole #wholesomefood #healthyfood #babyfood #toddler #natural #revolutionarymothering #health #healthiswealth #foodjustice #communitycare #communitywellness #brownbabies #mothersofcolor

Sorghaghtani: Tolerance Shadow: Disrespect “If we learn to open our hearts, anyone, including the people who drive us crazy, can be our teacher” - Pema Chödrön “The card honoring the full range of our humanness, Sorghaghtani teaches that all beings deserve respect. Legendary as Kublai Khan’s mother, Sorghaghtani taught her son to rule with a kind and tolerant heart, affirming the rights of Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and Confucians to peacefully coexist. She recognized that understanding prevails over force. When this sage ancestor appears she directs you to open your mind and expand your love. A bringer-together of East and West she urges you to bridge the divisions that live within your soul, within your home, and within your world” -The Mothers Wisdom Deck #tolerance #respect #motherswisdomdeck #revolutionarymothering #nye2017

My mom always managed to pull herself and her home together for the holidays. My brothers and I certainly knew that we didn’t “have it”. We knew that we lived in subsidized housing, and that gifts like that Donkey Kong JR tabletop video game (pic # 3) were well beyond mom’s financial reach. * * * As an adult, I suppose my ambivalence around the holidays stems from negotiating this tenuous space between scarcity and abundance...a space my mom managed to adorn and beautify at least once a year. #revolutionarymothering #motheringinthemovement #mothers #motherhood #christmas #christmasmemories #growingupblack #singlemothers #motherslove #docfilm #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #documentary #blackwomendirectors #directher

|| this baby wrap I got from a clothing exchange along with one @__amaliz__ gifted me are how I do most things in the crib. like pack these medicines up, make breakfast, and wash diapers. I'm remembering to care for myself as best I can, which looks different each day. mothering can look a plethora of ways, but one thing is for sure, it is werk. mothering is ancestral werk. and it's revolutionary. || . . #mamistrabajando #revolutionarymothering

Got this in the mail today and I can't wait to get started! Besides buying it for purposes of research and inspiration for the book I'm working on, I bought it to keep pushing myself to expand my perspective. "Inspired by the legacy of radical and queer black feminists of the 1970s and ’80s, Revolutionary Mothering places marginalized mothers of color at the center of a world of necessary transformation. The challenges we face as movements working for racial, economic, reproductive, gender, and food justice, as well as anti-violence, anti-imperialist, and queer liberation are the same challenges that many mothers face every day. Oppressed mothers create a generous space for life in the face of life-threatening limits, activate a powerful vision of the future while navigating tangible concerns in the present, move beyond individual narratives of choice toward collective solutions, live for more than ourselves, and remain accountable to a future that we cannot always see. Revolutionary Mothering is a movement-shifting anthology committed to birthing new worlds, full of faith and hope for what we can raise up together."

Snuck back into the US to get some quality baetime. They met me in the airport--Dulles y'all, that's what love looks like! They brought three beverage selections: a hot thermos full of my favorite tea from my favorite tea shop; room temp water, and cold water. Three food selections: a whole 10 dish Ethiopian vegan dinner, three varieties of my favorite snacks, and sambusas. They also brought me a bunch of some of my favorite flowers from my favorite (black woman owned) flower shop @leesflowershopdc. They're pretty great🙃 I'm excited to have found the love that my soul seeks and to have the ability to embrace it. In a society where pregnancy is seen as something that is done to women & often viewed as a worst case scenario, one of the most revolutionary things a mother can say to her (unborn) child is “I chose to have you”. ✊🏾 _______________________________________ #revolutionarymothering #beauty #creatingmynarrative #thisjourney #blackwombman #pregnancy #blackwomanmagic #beingintentional
