#repost @motheringinthemovement ・・・ My recent visit with first-time mother-to-be @kimkatrinmilan reminded me that the Revolution in the name of a Black child begins way before that child's medical team makes a potentially life-threatening decision about their mom's postnatal care based on racial bias (Black women are 3-4x more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than White women). * * The revolution begins before that child enters kindergarten to learn that their teacher's tendency to more closely monitor Black kids contributes to Black preschoolers being 3.6 x more likely to receive one or more suspensions relative to White kids (Yale study 2016) * * The revolution begins way before that child enters high school to encounter lower academic expectations or to be streamed into Applied courses 2x more than their peers from other racial backgrounds (York U 2017) * * It begins before that child is stopped and frisked by police with little to no anti-bias training, unlawfully carded, threatened or worse... * * Mothers in Movement are engaged in the work of conceiving and imagining a more just world while literally birthing our potential as a people. Their work is nothing short of revolutionary ✊🏾❤️🙏🏾#shesgotthewholeworldinherhands #mothering #motheringinthemovement #revolutionarymothering #revolutionarymothers #indiefilm #documentary #documentaryfilm #documentaryfilmmaking #nfb #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #blackwomenfilmmakers #blackmoms #blackmothers #pregnancy #blackjoy #blackgirlmagic #blackboymagic

On World Teachers Day let's honour the moms who choose to homeschool or "unschool" their children as a way of challenging hegemonic models of education that often do more damage than good - particular to kids of colour * * Mothers who engage in the tough conversations about identity, race, politics...those who take their kids to places like the African Burial Ground in Manhattan are actively subverting institutional mandates built around notions of assimilation and cultural homogeneity. To teach - to truly teach is to traverse the difficult terrain of our pained history alongside our children, providing context and encouraging critical thought. This is indeed an act of love. It's also a radical act of resistance. #mothering #motheringinthemovement #motheringinthemovementfilm #documentaryfilm #docs #nfb #researchmode #womeninfilm #blackfilm #blackwomeninfilm #directher #community #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothers #homeschooling #unschooling @fareofthefreechild

"Mothering in the Movement" film was conceived from a simple desire to document the undervalued work of women (particularly mothers and those who mother) at the centre of social justice movements. It has blossomed into a film that yearns to do so much more. Mothering has taken on a life of its own and like any new creation, it will stretch, expand, and take up space. It will challenge, interrogate, and move its viewers to consider the implications of ideologies and practices that don't centre women and children. I no longer have any control over the life force of this film. All I can do is trust my instincts and act as a midwife to the creative process. I wouldn't want it any other way. {📷 @quazimottoonwx } * * * #motheringinthemovement #mothering #mothers #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothers #community #momlife #moms #activists #motherhood #momactivist #motheractivist #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #blackwomen #tattoos #sistaink #blackink #blackmoms #indiefilm #nfb #documentaryfilm #docs #blackwomendirectors #solongsummer #backtoschool #teacherfilmmaker #brooklyn #brooklynphotographer

I had a conversation today with the formidable Lurie Daniel Favors (look her up) about mothering in times and spaces of resistance. When asked whether it's too much of a burden for children to be taught about the horrors of our past, she reminded me of the importance of CONTEXT. If you're not sure how context supports a child's enculturation/education, ask yourself if you've ever met a Jewish young person who didn't know about the Holocaust. * * Mothers who engage in the tough conversations about identity, race, politics...those who take their kids to places like the African Burial Ground in Manhattan are actively subverting institutional mandates built around notions of assimilation and cultural homogeneity. Came across a magazine article I annotated a decade ago (May 2007)! Alice Walker admonishing us to pull our grandmothers out from the weight of patriarchy and depression. "I saw the damage to the feminine that patriarchy imposes, and I understood that it's often the old woman-the grandmother, with all of that accumulated wisdom and compassion-who is depressed. She is depressed because she sees things so clearly...Sadly many of them have been anesthetized, but many of them have not. They've just been silent." ✊🏾❤️🔥I've been writing this film for a long time * * * * #motheringinthemovement #alicewalker #mothers #mothering #grandmothers #mothersaretherevolution #revolutionarymothers #documentaryfilm #doc #documentary #nfb #indiefilm #community #researchmode #creativegestationperiod #120months

Well said... @Regrann from @themrmajestic - Repost from @matthewcookeofficial using @RepostRegramApp - "I think we all know, deep down, that something more is required of us now. This truth is difficult to face because it's inconvenient and deeply unsettling. And yet silence isn't an option. On any given day, there's always something I'd rather be doing than facing the ugly, racist underbelly of America. I know that I am not alone. But I also know that the families of the slain officers, and the families of all those who have been killed by the police, would rather not be attending funerals. And I'm sure that many who refused to ride segregated buses in Montgomery after Rosa Parks stood her ground wished they could've taken the bus, rather than walk miles in protest, day after day, for a whole year. But they knew.... If change was ever going to come, they were going to have to walk. And so do we....I know many people believe that our criminal justice system can be "fixed"... President Obama seems to think this way. He suggested yesterday that police-community relations can be improved meaningfully by a task force he created last year... I used to think like that... I no longer believe that we can "fix" the police, as though the police are anything other than a mirror reflecting back to us the true nature of our democracy. We cannot “fix” the police without a revolution of values and radical change to the basic structure of our society. Of course important policy changes can and should be made to improve police practices. But if we're serious about having peace officers — rather than a domestic military at war with its own people— we're going to have to get honest with ourselves about who our democracy actually serves and protects. Repost from @mansaobi using @RepostRegramApp - regram @amorroxchelle_zaina The Black Panthers would ride around patrolling black neighborhoods and protect them against police violence. They would follow the police when they pulled over a black person, armed and citing legal statutes. They had weapons and self-defense training, the free breakfast program for children and poor families, free medical clinics, free sickle cell test screening and they had their own newspaper. They raised money to pay for bail and legal funding for black people. They encouraged black people to learn the laws and to speak out against injustice. regram @amorroxchelle_zaina Just because a person has on a uniform does not give him the right to come and shoot up your neighborhood. No, this is not right, and my suggestion would be that as long as the police department doesn’t use those methods in white neighborhoods, they shouldn’t come to Harlem and use them in our neighborhood. I’d rather be dead than let someone walk around my house or in my neighborhood shooting it up, where my children are in the line of fire. Either they’d die or I’d die. It’s not intelligent, and it all started when a little boy was shot by a policeman, and he was turned loose, the same as the sheriff was turned loose in Mississippi when he killed the three civil rights workers. I hope you don’t misunderstand me when I say that…and I’m not advocating anything illegal against the police. I know good policemen, and I know bad policemen. I know policemen that bend over backwards to be human, and to protect other humans and to treat people as if they are human beings. Then I know others who shouldn’t be on the force. They’re not qualified, morally…even mentally. #falconsheightsshooting #altonsterling🙏🏾 #policebrutality #philandocastile #altonsterling🙏🏾 #blacklivesmatter #policebrutality #panafricanism #malcolmx #revolutionarymothers #african #africanking #africanqueen#blacklivesmatter#educate#education#blackpride#blackhistory#malcolmx#marcusgarvey#mlk#hueypnewton#assatashakur#angeladavis#harriettubman#muhmmadali#panafrican#bpp#johnhenrikclarke

Symone Marshall ...... Arrested for not possessing a valid drivers license, held in custody because she couldn’t make bail, “failure to receive adequate medical attention” is the reason of her death. On April 26th she was in a car accident and instead of taking her to the hospital they detained her. Died last Tuesday in police custody in the Walker County Jail in Huntsville,Texas. The same jail that killed #sandrabland.
