I love coaching. There is really nothing like it. Especially coaching kids. Not only do you teach them boxing but you teach them about life. On occassion I will have a former student reach out to me on social media and thank me for influencing them and even changing their life in some way. BOXING WORKOUT ROUTINE WITH WEIGHTS. This video shows one of my 45 minute workouts where I use weights, punching bag and a mat. BOXING FOOTWORK - FEINTING WITH YOUR FEET This video will help you with BOXING FOOTWORK for feinting with your feet. Usually boxers feint with their shoulders but using your feet works well with more experienced fighters who are able to see your feet as well as the rest of your body when sparring and fighting. If you accentuate the step enough to where your body moves to one direction, this works while sparring and fighting more novice boxers as well. You do not need to bounce as I am in the video. You can simply just step with one foot and then come back and fire the opposite hand. The idea is to throw your opponent off and make them think you are moving a different direction than you really are. Then boom! Surprise them with the opposite punch! Footwork is key in your speed, defense and even power. 🥊BLOCKING COUNTER PUNCHES🥊 This is Haley, she’s been kickin ass with me once a week since March. Today I introduced some new defenses to her, How To Block A Counter Punch. She picked it up so fast, she’s my little sponge! 🙌🏽🙌🏽 Watch the video see how quick she reacts to it, you’d swear she’s been doin these blocks for weeks! I’m gunna break it down what these blocks are. 👉🏽When Haley throws a jab at me, her left side of her face is exposed. If I’m fast enough, I’m gunna slip that jab and come over the top with my right hand. So when we jab, pull that hand straight back in to towards ur eyebrow. Nice and high. I won’t get into detail now, but there’s advanced way to make ur opponent throw the punch u want them to, coz ur game-plan is to set up ur own punch. Back to this tho! When she exposes her left side, she quickly retracts and braces for impact of my punch. As soon as she feels my punch land, BOOM, straight right hand she lands on my chin. BLOCK WITH THE LEFT HAND, THROW THE RIGHT CROSS. 👉🏽When Haley throws her right cross at me, she leaves her right side of her face exposed, and if I slip her cross, I have my front hand, left, hook ready to go, so when you throw ur cross, build the good habit of retracting fast, pulling the hand back to the ear. 🙋🏼‍♀️Tip, leave ur body weight on the front foot, just bring the hand back like your answering the phone📞, bodyweight STAYS shifted to front foot. 🤷🏼‍♀️So when Haley blocks my hook, she has her front leg loaded, her left hand loaded, and my chin is exposed to be hit. ACCURACY DRILL ON PUNCHING BAG We did this at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs when I was at the Elite Coaches Clinic. 1. You place a dot on your punching bag with chalk or you can make an X with tape and you want to hit that spot with all of your shots. You can also add a spot closer to the bottom to hone in your body shots. 2. You want to turn your punches (knuckles) over so that you hit the bag straight on and not to the side which will make your bag spin a lot. 3. Move to the left and right of the bag to follow that dot and continue hitting it with jabs, right hands, upper cuts and left hooks. This drill is great for loosening up fighters that are stiff and always clenched. This helps them realize the importance of remaining loose and keeping energy in the rounds for when it matter. @packie.collins taught me, “squeeze on impact”. That doesn’t mean have limp arms and wrists, but it does mean, keep the guard up, just don’t squeeze the life out of your arms. When ur about to connect with ur opponent, squeeze the fist tight, create a nice strong fist. The tennis ball is great for this as it encourages you to keep loose and then to catch the ball, you have to have a tight fist. Met with me Irish friend @jack_coffey_fitness for ☕️ last week. Buzzin to see him doin so well out here. We’re both dreamers that wanted more than the norm at home so we feckin took a risk and tried it. Now we’re laughing our way thru the weeks! Then I watch @tony_jeffries and how his mind ticks, always striving for more and pushing for more and saying Feck the limits! Gotta surround urself with these type of people ALWAYS! One thing I love about LA, the palm trees 😂😂😂 but seriously, anything U wanna do, its there to be done! I haven’t even entered the big leagues over here, it’s mad the potential I see, I love it! It’s inspiring! One things for sure, I will never stay stagnant or accept defeat! I’ve seen it happen, the bigger u dream, the farther u go! 🎾 BOXING DRILL FOR HAND EYE COORDINATION & SPEED🎾 What: 👉🏽With your back hand, throw the ball out in front of you within jabbing distance 👉🏽Step into your jab, full extension on the arm 👉🏽Squeeze the ball with a nice tight fist, like you would have with a punch 👉🏽Build good defense habits, drive that ball throwing arm back to your chin 🥊NOW THE BACK HAND 👉🏽Same rules above apply for the cross........ 👉🏽Little bit more rotation required from the back foot/hip to throw a good Cross 🤷🏼‍♀️Why? This drill is so good for hand eye coordination, and getting that target. Hugely important in Boxing. It also teaches us how to stay loose and relaxed as boxers. If we’re tensing up and squeezing our fists when there’s no punch happening, we are tiring ourselves out for no reason. Learn to stay loose until the punch is coming out. Also great for hand speed, the faster we can snatch this ball, the faster we can pick off those punches. As well as those it’ll also drill the basics of how a punch should feel, coz we don’t have a bag or mitts to punch, it helps us to focus on how the body should feel during a punch (rotating and extending arms etc) Give it a try and let me know how it goes! Way back to when I was fighting at 125lbs. My current weight is 137lbs and my body actually feels pretty comfy at 140😉 When I was fighting I did very little weight training. I honestly didn't even know how to lift weights properly. I ran a lot and did a lot of body weight exercises and neck exercises (which I hated). If I went back in time I would definitely add in more weight training as a fighter. Even now when I hit the bags I have more power and the muscles I have now do not affect my speed. What: 👉🏽Resistance band looped around an anchor 👉🏽In your Boxing stance, put the band under your front hand 👉🏽Practice your jab, with the checkpoints - Full extended arm/ knuckles turned over/ shoulder meeting chin/ slight hip rotation/ breathe out with punch/ reset hand back to chin, elbow back to face. 👉🏽Practice your Cross, checkpoints - Full extended arm/ knuckles turned over/ ball of feet in back foot twisting into the floor to help rotate the back hip, driving all that force forward. 👉🏽Get fancy 🎩 progress into a combo with straight punches, 1-1-2/ 1-2-1-1-2/ 1-2-1-2 Why? 🤷🏼‍♀️ This drill is great for a couple reasons. 1. Punching with resistance is a great way to build up speed in your punches, get those fast hands. 2. The pull in the band after the punch was thrown helps us learn how bringing that hand back to the chin nice and quick is important! Builds good defensive habits. 3. Great for building shoulder muscle endurance 4. Adds intensity to your shadow boxing, fires up the heart rate, great for fat loss if that’s your goal, or cardiovascular strength if your a fighter trying to increase anaerobic capacity.
