Via @melindafrenchgates⁣ ⁣ / Today would have been the 112th birthday of Rear Admiral Grace Hopper whose many achievements included the development of English-based programming languages. We remember her as a pioneer in computer science and an inspiration for women everywhere. Happy birthday, "Amazing Grace." / 👩‍💻⁣ ⁣ Illustration from @Kimothy.Joy’s book -That’s What She Said

Friends: My brother, Safraz, is a board member of a wonderful non-profit, Seeding Labs. This organization works to provide the greatest scientific minds in the developing world with the tools and training they need to respond to local challenges before these challenges become global crises. As part of its mission, Seeding Labs has donated over 200 tons of laboratory equipment and supplies to support scientists at 67 institutions in 34 countries and helps to train more than 30,000 students per year. Safraz is in the process of raising funds for this organization so that it can continue its mission in the upcoming year. Please consider helping the organization by using his personal link here: https://donate.seedinglabs.org/safraz Any donation, no matter what the size, will go a long way to helping a scientist in a developing country. #seedinglabs #donate #change #scientist #student #research #activism #nonprofit #dogood #fundraising #socialgood #charity

Here is 253 Mathilde. Mathilde is a large asteroid located in the intermediate asteroid belt. It was discovered by Austrian astronomer, Johann Palise, at the Vienne Observatory on 12 November, 1885. This particular asteroid has a very eccentric orbit, giving it an orbital period of 4.31 years. Mathilde has average orbital speed of 17.98 km/s and a rotational period of 17.4 days. The equatorial surface gravity on Mathilde is 0.00989 m/s^2. Calculations place Mathilde’s total mass at around (1.033 +/- 0.044)x10^17 kg. The average temperature on Mathilde’s surface is =174 K. Mathilde has a very dark albedo that’s comparable to fresh asphalt. Mathilde shares the same composition as Cl1 or CM2 carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. Most of Mathilde’s surface is dominated by phyllosillicate minerals and is covered in craters. The two large craters are Ishikair (29.3 km) and Karoo (33.4 km). Mathilde has a low density of 1.3 g/cm^3. This density is less than half of that of a typical carbonaceous chondrite and possibly indicates that Mathilde is a very loose packed rubble pile. In fact, almost 50% of Mathilde’s interior volume is open space. However, a 20 km long scarp that is present on Mathilde May indicate that the asteroid does have some form of structural strength and could possibly contain some large internal components. In June of 1997, Mathilde was visited by the NEAR Shoemaker spacecraft. At that time, it was the largest asteroid to be visited by a spacecraft and the first carbonaceous asteroid to be explored. #nasa #mars #moon #science #math #storm #star #scientist #discover #physics #space #gravity #spacex #astronomy #sky #alien #nerd #aviation #explore #stem #galaxy #atmosphere

Blood clot removal in heart Depending on the size and location of the clot(s), you may need emergency treatment or routine treatment. Emergency Treatment - Blood clots can damage the body, leading to serious problems, such as stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. If a blood clot completely blocks the flow of blood, then all the heart muscle beyond the clot are starved of oxygen and a heart attack can occur. Stents are used to help the previously blocked arteries remain open after an angioplasty. This allows blood to continue to flow throughout the coronary arteries.

I’m taking this #silkssunday to shamelessly say how proud I am of the progress I’ve made with my flexibility 🤸‍♂️ In August, I decided climbing curtains seemed like a fun hobby. Three months later, I surprised myself with how much consistent and purposeful stretching paid off! It feels good to put these pictures side by side and see the différence it has made. . I couldn’t train today, so the video is from class earlier this week. We learned a new pathway to belay, and this is a candid video of me figuring out what I could do once I got there (including realizing I started too low and ending up on the floor!) I take A LOT of videos of myself for my own reference and only show you guys a few clips that actually look kinda nice 🙃 As with playing a sport, lifting, or anything physical, it helps to watch yourself and critique what went well and what you could do better next time. . Next week I’ll post how I got into the belay knot in the first place! . #aerialsilks #aerial #silks #aerialist #flying #fun #flexible #flexibility #splitsprogress #progress #progresspic #fit #fitness #fitwomen #strong #strongwomen #womenwholift #gradstudent #gradstudentlife #scientist #neuroscientist #scientistswholift #weekend #weekendvibes #nationaldanceacademy #coralville #iowacity #iowa

@Regran_ed from @spaciton - MESSIER 16 (THE EAGLE NEBULA) In the first image we see these towering tendrils of cosmic dust and gas sit at the heart of M16, or the Eagle Nebula. The aptly named Pillars of Creation, featured in this stunning Hubble image, are part of an active star-forming region within the nebula and hide newborn stars in their wispy columns. Although this is not Hubble’s first image of this iconic feature of the Eagle Nebula, it is the most detailed. The blue colors in the image represent oxygen, red is sulfur, and green represents both nitrogen and hydrogen. The pillars are bathed in the scorching ultraviolet light from a cluster of young stars located just outside the frame. The winds from these stars are slowly eroding the towers of gas and dust. Stretching roughly 4 to 5 light-years, the Pillars of Creation are a fascinating but relatively small feature of the entire Eagle Nebula, which spans 70 by 55 light-years. The nebula, discovered in 1745 by the Swiss astronomer Jean-Philippe Loys de Chéseaux, is located 7,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Serpens. With an apparent magnitude of 6, the Eagle Nebula can be spotted through a small telescope and is best viewed during July. A large telescope and optimal viewing conditions are necessary to resolve the Pillars of Creation. In the second image we see observing in infrared light, Hubble pierced through the obscuring gas and dust of M16’s Pillars of Creation. This ethereal image reveals the young stars that are being formed within the pillars. It also uncovers a myriad of background stars that were hidden at visible wavelengths. #culture just gets in the way of #experiments #rogue #scientist

A couple days ago I shared an experiment that high school students carried out to learn about genome editing while visiting the Marine Biological Lab in Woods Hole. They used a device called a microinjector to introduce CRISPR-cas9 into Xenopus (the African clawed frog) embryos, targeting a gene in the melanin synthesis pathway. If the experiment worked, you would expect some individuals lacking a functional melanin gene to be lighter in color, since they would be unable to produce the dark pigment Indeed, this is exactly what we saw this morning. After a series of rapid cell divisions and development through gastrulation and neurulation, the students were able to see some Xenopus with dark pigmented eyes and skin (the normal phenotype) and some that clearly lacked partial or all pigment (indicating partial or complete gene knockouts) Can you spot the difference? What do you think about high schoolers performing DNA editing as a “simple” tool to learn about genetics? In times where some scientist blow past ethical considerations (*cough the whole CRISPR baby scientist guy in the news*) I think it’s more important than ever to teach bio-ethics to young students like these, and also recognize that molecular tools like CRISPR are here to stay - it’s just too easy to use. The genie is out of the bottle so to speak, and like any tool, can be used for extremely good purposes, or ones that are very bad, depending on who is using it. .
