Squat basics, first of all, you’ve got to stop getting fancy. 👊 . The squat is a basic movement for every day life and for some reason it gets so corrupted by faulty motor patterns and tissue restrictions that it ends up becoming the bane of most people’s existence.🙀 . In order to squat, the hips needs to open, the torso has to support an upright position, the knees have to track in line with the tibia and femur (imagine a pair of train tracks and the patella is the train, crooked tracks equals a grenade in the knee🔥) and there needs to be a hip hinge. . We can delve into the complexity of the squat including ankle mobility, glute asymmetry and a whole host of other issues, but remember, this is going for basics. . Here’s the take away, you’ve got to practice a good squat and not climb under giant weight because of a fragile ego from some past relationship issues with your mother, save that for a couch 🛋. Most people squat in suboptimal position and constantly reinforce that CNS to default into something that attempts to look like a squat. . One of the key 🔑 parts of a squat that is often overlooked is the movement of the thoracic spine, which is going to determine where the load sits in relation to your hips. . Here is a great way to clean up your squat and start driving some serious horsepower into the ground without sacrificing a good portion of your connective tissue 😉 . Back on Track In mid-December I suffered an upper-back injury that unfortunately accompanied me on my trip away to the US🇺🇸 over the festive season😒 Over-enthusiasm whilst performing a set or Snatch Grip Rack Pulls manifested into something more serious and the inconvenient timing of my trip meant that training back was put on the back burner for a month😕. Far from an ideal situation just before commencing prep for a competition but a timely reminder to remain focused and sensible with my exercise technique. Upon my return I put in an SOS to an old school mate and chiro-by-trade @dobbo90 and before long I was back in action😁. - We constantly analyse our physique based on what we can see in the mirror and often design our training program accordingly. Any muscle that is out of sight can quite easily become out of mind and this means that all too often the Back is neglected. Detailed below are a few tips you might like to incorporate into your badk - ✅Free-weight Compounds are Key: Multi-joint movements such as Deadlifts, Barbell Bent Over Row, Chin Ups and DB Rows form the foundation of my back regime and are usually positioned first on my program. - ✅Focus on the contraction during each rep: whilst it might be tempting to load up the bar and haul as much weight as possible there are downsides to this that go beyond potential injury. When you are training constantly assess whether the muscle you are trying to target is actually doing the work. ☝🏻️Control the tempo of each rep and avoid momentum taking over so that you can get the intended benefit from the exercise. Proper form and execution with every rep will also ensure you avoid injury setbacks - a timely reminder for yours truly!😔 - ✅Change the grips for variation: Pronated, Neutral and Supinated grips should be use for rowing movements and pull ups. Experiment with wide grip and close grip variations. - ✅Frequency: train back twice per week as part of a "Pull Session" with Biceps. Vary the rep schemes and levels of intensity with which you train throughout the week. Heavy loads with low reps on one day focusing on strength followed by a higher volume lighter day later in the week
