At 8 months your baby will go through yet another sleep 'regression'. This can occur anywhere between 8-10 months of age. This is a period of significant brain development, we may also see baby start to crawl and pull themselves up on things. This is also where we see their first peak in separation anxiety occur. SLEEP TRAINING RULES (In the McQueeney Household): ▪️nurse until he falls asleep or is on the verge of sleeping ▪️if he doesn’t fall asleep then lots & lots of cuddles ▪️while he stands in his crib (which some nights happens for 30 minutes) read him bedtime stories ▪️when he gets really really sleepy just sit by his side ▪️once he lays down rub his head until he falls asleep or until he’s so delirious you can walk out Sleep training is still tough on all of us, but again I REFUSE to let my son cry it out. I refuse to let him think for one second that he is alone. I refuse to let him feel sad or abandoned. Sleeping SHOULD NOT be a scary experience or a hopeless one for our babies. Consistent routines work wonders for both babies and toddlers. I really do not believe in a "one size fits all" approach to sleep learning/training- I believe there are A LOT of ways to approach it and the way that feels most natural to the parents is always best. ⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Regardless of what approach you take, CONSISTENCY KEY. When babies and toddlers alike know what to expect, they fall into the routines more easily and feel less anxious about what's to come. ⁣ ⁣ It also makes it less scary for them if all care givers follow the same patterns and routines. Consistency creates routine, routine builds confidence in what's to come and confidence helps build security. All things most parents hope their child feels. Yikes. Settle down crabby kitty... Now, I will freely admit that my parenting game is not always on point. Because, momming is hard. And not just where screen time is concerned. I have definitlely been known to say "yes" to Netflix so that I can get the things done. I rationalize this by reminding myself that my almost 7 year old wants to be a Ninja when he grows up. Bless. So those extra episodes of TMNT and Ninjago are basically the equivalent of educational life skills at this point. I can live with that. What I find hard to live with though, is a crabby kid. So I do put a cap on the time between TV and bedtime. And here's why: The light from TV and tablets interrupts the production of melatonin. And melatonin is what makes us sleepy. So if your little ones are watching TV or playing games right up until bedtime, it makes it really hard for them to settle into sleep and before you know it you've got a battle of the wills in full effect. Now they've become overtired and when they finally do get to sleep, it's often restless and you can bet that you'll have a creepy bedside visitor in the middle of the night. And we all know what happens after a poor night of sleep. Everyone is tired and crabby the entire next day and I don't know about you, but ain't nobody got time for that over here. The great thing is that this is easy enough to avoid simply by turning off the screens an hour before your bedtime routine begins. So yesterday I decided it was time to start sleep training my girls. (Happy Father's Day to my husband, right? 🤦‍♀️) We started using the #ferbermethod last night. They literally screamed for four hours straight. 😳 Pray for me tonight. 🙏 So, fast forward to today. I have been trying to make the girls nap in their cribs - no swaddles, no pacis. I have had the monitor right next to me and hear Eliana start making some little whimpers, so I check the monitor. She is literally half out of the crib! We survived the 4 month sleep regression that felt like it lasted 4ever! We are still solidifying the schedule but we have seen such an improvement! 2 year old sleep!⁣ ✌️ ⁣ We're talking 2 year old's this week! I like to start with what's the 'norm' at this age:⁣ ⁣ At 2 years of age, sleep needs drop to about 12-12.5 hours per day [low end 11.5, high end 13]. Is your child averaging more than this? GREAT! There is nothing wrong with that! Some kids have higher sleep needs than others. If your child is below 11.5 hours, it might be worth taking a look at the schedule to see if any adjustments are needed.⁣ ⁣ At this age, we are aiming for a midday nap that is 1-2 hours in duration [no longer than 2 hours] and occurs between 100-130pm [I would not lay down any earlier than 1245pm for a nap at this age and most kids need at least 6 hours of awake time before the nap]. If your child fights the 1245pm lay down, try 100pm or 115pm! I wouldn't go later than 115pm, however.⁣ ⁣ This nap should end no later than 300pm to ensure bedtime isn't pushed too late. The waketime before bed should still be ~5 hours [i.e. if nap ends at 3pm, in bed at 745pm to be asleep by 800pm]*⁣ ⁣ *my child takes longer than 15m to fall asleep, is something wrong? NOPE! It is very normal for toddlers who still nap to take up to an hour to fall asleep at bedtime. This is kind of the trade-off for keeping that nap, and you'll likely find once the nap is dropped, the transition time becomes shorter.⁣ ⁣ Sample schedule:⁣ ⁣ 6:30am - awake⁣ 7:00am - breakfast⁣ 9:00am - snack⁣ 12:00pm - lunch⁣ 12:40pm - nap routine begins⁣ 12:45pm - lay down for nap⁣ 1:00pm-3:00pm - nap⁣ 3:30pm - snack⁣ 6:00pm - dinner⁣ 7:15pm - bedtime routine begins [no milk in bedtime routine! Baby sleeps on their back with their feet at the end of the cot/crib 2. Babys sleep in their cot, in same room as you until at least 6 months 3. Bedtime routines need to be fairly consistent in order to be successful. HELP A MAMA OUT! Ok. Ladies. Mamas. I have a PLEA for advice so hear me out, be respectful, and send any and ALL ideas my way. • As those of you who follow along know, we have coslept with both the kids. We ended up putting Hudson in his own bed at 9 months because neither of us was sleeping and it was taking a serious toll on our life. Presley is 22 months and still sleeps in our bed and up until recently it hasnt presented any serious problems, but I'm leaving in July for a few days and want her to be in her own bed because she still wakes frequently to nurse and I dont want it to be an epic undertaking for Adam who works everyday and needs sleep. • So. The last weekish weve been putting her in her own crib and laying beside the crib, talking to her, leaving, coming back in patting her back, etc. And after like 2 days she was doing GREAT and was even sleeping through the night. 2 nights ago though, she figured out a way to climb out of the crib and since then, I cant get her to sleep in there if my life depended on it. The second you out her in she screams and climbs out. The past 2 nights weve been up with her until past 10 just trying to get her to calm down and go to sleep. Mind you, when she finally does go to sleep she sleeps all night, but getting her there has been next to impossible and when she wakes at 5am she climbs out and gets in bed with us. • I'm feeling like I'm failing or that I may be hurting her. I dont want her to feel afraid of her bef. I feel like maybe I'm moving too fast but then I think half of it is her just being stubborn (shes very stubborn). Any insight, any help, any routines or ideas?? We have talked, explained what were doing, EVERYTHING. I dont know what to do at this point. • Thank you, mamas! Sos LOL

Some breastfeeding moms wonder if their baby is capable of sleeping all night because baby is getting breast milk and not formula. ⁣ ⁣ The answer? Your healthy, growing baby is fully capable of sleeping all night, regardless of what type of milk they are getting ☺️. The idea that formula helps your baby sleep longer is a total myth. ⁣ ⁣ I’ve had people make the comment to me “oh, your baby sleeps all night because you’re doing formula”. Cue eye roll. ⁣ ⁣ In case you missed my “fed is best” rant, it’s saved in my highlights 😉. In there I talked about how I’ve fed my 3 babies differently. One got my pumped milk, one was EBF in the beginning, and one got formula from day 1.⁣ ⁣ It has nothing to do with the type of milk they get and everything to do with YOU teaching them how to sleep. ⁣ ⁣ Raise your hand if you’ve taught your baby how to sleep, even if they are getting only breast milk 🙋🏻‍♀️. ⁣ ⁣ So if you’re are exclusively breastfeeding, don’t question yourself or your ability to teach your baby to sleep. You can do this! ⁣ ⁣ If they are growing, they are getting enough❤️

Sleep training day 13: mom, dad + crib vs. baby O: 1-0 👐 This boy has been such a challenge sleep wise and completely immune to previous sleep training attempts that worked well on his sister. After 13 months of not sleeping more than 2-3 hours at a time and being kicked in our faces at night, we called in an expert. It felt like a defeat since we managed to sleep train his sister easily. But after crying at the pediatrician's office multiple times and not knowing why he was so squirmy at night, I finally got some tangible help in the form of a name of a sleep trainer. The methods we have used consider you and your baby's needs and won't let your baby cry for hours if he needs you. But he does learn how to separate from whatever his beloved sleep association is (me, in our case) in a safe and non-traumatizing way so everyone can feel happy and confident during this process. Baby O was night weaned 'cold turkey' AND put in his own room (which he will share with sister) night 1. And he did just fine!!! She helped us via phone calls and daily emails with feedback and advice and I've never felt more supported and better guided in something so vital for our family's well-being. DON’T WORRY, THEY AREN’T REAL ! I was just setting off to do a 3 hour Masterclass at a clients house and took two of my dolls to help with demonstrations. They are called Baby Reborn dolls and I love them because they are so realistic. They are soft bodied so their legs, arms and head are realistically floppy, and I get them specially weighted to 5 or 6lbs for a more authentic experience when handling them. In this consultation, the mum and I figured out that the main problem was insufficient winding, in a baby who never seemed to get to the end of his burps, so we spent a lot of time practising winding holds, techniques and sequences. We used one of the dolls and the real baby, and made good progress. We also used the doll to practise swaddling techniques because that seemed to have a beneficial effect on his sleep. Once that was sorted we had a general review of his routine and together, the mum and I made a few adjustments for her to try over the next few days. Can’t wait to hear how they get on over the next week 🤞 Does anyone else struggle to wind their baby, or aren’t sure if they are getting all the wind out ? When your bedtime routine starts with a bath, it is a really good first cue for their brains and bodies that we are getting ready to transition to night time. SLEEP SPRAY ➕ I can’t remember how I discovered this sleep tip, but sometime before my first baby was born I read somewhere about “sleep spray.” Basically, a lavender essential oil mist to spritz in the crib. I thought to myself that it was simple enough, so I’d give it a try. And now...I tell every new mama about it! ➕ Lavender is a natural sleep aid. Scientific studies have shown how lavender helps with sleep, pain, and anxiety. Often when we think about sleep, we think about the obvious senses: sight (darkness); hearing (white noise); taste (going to sleep full); touch (temperature and comfort). But what about smell? It’s a powerful sense that you can use to help teach your baby how to sleep better. ➕ During the first couple of weeks of baby’s life, spritz some sleep spray wherever your baby is sleeping. They will soon become accustomed to sleeping with the scent of lavender. After a month or so, only use the sleep spray in designated sleep spaces: crib, bassinet, co-sleeper, pack n play, etc. You don’t want to use it in a place where your baby is playing or spending awake time—that’s a mixed message! When you’re ready to transition your baby to the crib, use the lavender sleep spray in their new sleep space, and it will smell the same as where they’ve already been sleeping, making it a familiar and comforting place. Also, if baby associates the smell of lavender with sleep, as opposed to just the smell of mama, that is very helpful to them learning how to sleep independently. ➕ You can make your own sleep spray, it’s easy! Just use 4 oz of purified water + 10 drops of lavender essential oil. Use a glass spray bottle, shake, shake, shake—and you’re done! Or you can buy a lavender spray right off the shelf, either one works. ➕ I spritz my baby’s crib every night before bed as a part of his bedtime routine. We also travel with it, so even when baby is sleeping in a new place, their space still smells just like home 💜 All my clients receive bottles just like the one above!

How often do you get to enjoy your breakfast, your cup of coffee, your morning routine, your first hour of the day...without a little one crying out?⠀ *⠀ If you are dealing with a child who wakes earlier than 6AM or even if you your child once was sleeping until a later time and is now waking earlier, notice that red flag waving. Early risings are signs that your child is overtired.⠀ *⠀ It may be that bedtime is too late or naps are too short. Perhaps she recently went through a transition or milestone causing her to miss out on some sleep but, once it passed, was overtired and couldn't get back to the usual.⠀ *⠀ If this is going on for a week straight, My Dear, it is time to intervene. Don't wait months or years thinking her wake time has just all of a sudden shifted to an earlier time. Help her to get back on track so that she can get the rest she needs.⠀ *⠀ Reality check, every child is different. Very few do actually just wake naturally prior to 6AM. However, most children wake somewhere between the hours of 6AM and 7AM, with a more specific time per child. In fact, unless sixteen weeks and under (adjusted age), I usually advise waking your child by 7AM at the latest for a consistent wake time and to help regulate your child's 24-hour biological clock.⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ Unsure of how to help your child get back? Even though I don’t have an official “summer vacation” as a stay-at-home mom, there is something about summertime that just makes life feel a little bit less structured and more fun! I feel like I have more time in the summer months and am able to focus a little less on to-do lists and a little more on getting outside in the sunshine. ☀️ • Three things I really want to do with Gavin this summer are: ▫️ Go to new places! The zoo, local parks, up north, and eating out on restaurant patios just to name a few 🦓🐅🦍🦏 ▫️ Start teaching Gavin how to swim. My parents live in our neighborhood and have a pool, so we plan to spend a lot of time over there .🏊‍♀️ 💧 ▫️ Get outside every single day for a bike ride or a walk. Gavin loves the outdoors, and it’s good for me, too! 🚲 • Three things for myself I want to focus on over the next few months are: ▫️ Cleaning up my eating habits. Since I am still nursing Gavin, I have really fallen into the pattern of eating whatever I want, whenever I want. I’m feeling really sluggish lately and know a cleaner diet will help that! 🍉🥬🍋🥕 ▫️ Doing something active every single day and getting a good workout in at least every other day.💪🏼 ▫️ Setting my alarm to get up at 6am every day before Gavin wakes up to have a little time for myself to start the day. 🧘‍♀️ • Whether you get a break this summer or not, I hope that you and your family get to spend some quality time together and do fun things that you wouldn’t normally do! No one was getting the rest that was needed, and we had some unsafe sleeping arrangements happening out of desperation. I successfully sleep trained my first boy at 4 months old, and I have never looked back. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ His brother followed 3.5 years later. I knew better this time, so I relaxed and enjoyed those first 4 months. I didn’t worry about habits, because I knew I could break them eventually. Unsere Haut wird tagsüber ziemlich stark beansprucht ... Wetter, Licht, Wasser, Kratzen, etc. Um sich wieder zu regenerieren, wachsen die Hautzellen nachts. - Es gibt Untersuchungen über die Attraktivität von Menschen, die gut schlafen und denen, die schlecht schlafen. Die Ergebnisse fallen eindeutig zugunsten der guten Schläfer aus. - Guter Schlaf ist also die beste Nachtcreme. Peek-A-Boo. This classic game is a favorite for babies. However this has more meaning than just for fun. This teaches our little ones about object permanence- the idea that you still exist even though your little doesn’t see you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When your child hits her separation anxiety peaks, she is trying to understand this — Mommy still exists even though I don’t see her as I crawl away, or as she steps away for a second. And for sleep- mommy will still come back tomorrow, when I go to sleep tonight.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ .⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you need to reassure her a little more at bedtime, you can. Go back and check on her.
