💥THORACIC MOBILIZATION💥 ---------- In the clinical world, it is well recognized that neck pain often improves when the next adjacent spinal region (the thoracic spine) is treated. There are numerous theories as to why this change is seen ranging from the very mechanical (if your mid-back is stiff, your neck endures more stress) to the more modern, neurophysiological explanations. Nonetheless, clinical experience and research tell us that mobilizing the thoracic spine can help to reduce neck pain. - Now, unless you are under the care of a musculoskeletal practitioner, you may be wondering how exactly you might go about this on your own. Well, there are several options, but the foam roller is an excellent choice for most people. Although this tool is not as specific as someone who is trained in manual therapy, it can be extremely useful. - Here's what to do: ✅ Position the roller so that it runs perpendicular to your spine (as shown in the image) and is placed generally between the shoulder blades. . ✅ Next, either cross your arms over your chest or put your hands behind your head (if is uncomfortable to hold your head up) and slowly walk your feet up and down the floor so that the roller moves along the thoracic spine (not the neck and not the low back). . ✅ During this process, keep your abs tucked slightly to avoid simply arching your low back (the picture shows a bit more arch than is desirable). Arching the low back really just means you are missing out on a more focused thoracic mobilization. . ✅ For neck pain, keep the roller in an area between an imaginary line level with the bottom of your shoulder blades running up to the base of your neck. - I hope this helps! Few of us realise the importance of posture to our health and performance. When we are properly aligned, our bones, not our muscles, support our weight, reducing effort and strain on our nervous system. ••• Posture ranks right up at the top of the list when you are talking about optimal health. It is as important as eating right, exercising, getting proper rest. Good posture is a way of doing things with more energy, less stress and fatigue. ••• Without good posture, you cannot really be physically, chemically or mentally fit. Without good posture, your nerves will not communicate properly with your glands and organs, resulting in all kinds of chemical imbalances. And without good posture, you actually affect your mental state and start feeling down without even realising it! ••• If you spend hours every day sitting in a chair, if you hunch forward or balance your weight primarily on one leg, the muscles of your neck and back have to carry the weight of the body rather than it being supported by the spine. The resulting tension and joint pressure can affect you not only physically, but emotionally and chemically too, from the predictable shoulder and back pain to headaches, short attention span, depression, indigestion. ••• Poor posture distorts the alignment of bones, chronically tenses muscles, and contributes to stressful conditions such as loss of vital lung capacity, increased fatigue, reduced blood and oxygen to the brain, limited range of motion, stiffness of joints, pain syndromes, reduced mental alertness, and decreased productivity at work. ••• Posture is the window to your spine and your health. If your posture is off and out of balance, then your spine is off and out of alignment. If your spine is off, then your nervous system is also off and will experience interference and cause dysfunction in your body parts, organs and ultimately lead to a lowered state of health.

Pool noodles have so many more uses than just a floating device. If I could only recommend one stretch, this one is it! Laying on a pool noodle aligned with your spine, arms out, palms up. This is a great posture stretch, opens up the chest and allows all the muscles along the spine to relax💆🏻‍♀️. It’s a passive stretch, so all you have to do is get in position and relax for a few minutes. You might even get a few good pops out of it! 👍🏻

Spondylolisthesis is a condition of the spine whereby one of the vertebra slips forward or backward in relation to the next vertebra. Forward slippage of an upper vertebra on a lower vertebra is referred to as anterolisthesis, while backward slippage is referred to as retrolisthesis. Spondylolisthesis can lead to a deformity of the spine as well as a narrowing of the spinal canal (central spinal stenosis) or compression of the exiting nerve roots (foraminal stenosis). Spondylolisthesis is most common in the low back (lumbar spine) but can also occur in the mid to upper back (thoracic spine) and neck (cervical spine).
