It should be well known that working at a job consisting of sitting all day is bad for us; making our joints feel tight, stiff, and sluggish. Studies show a habitual sedentary lifestyle can be a risk factor for cardio metabolic disease. So its a great idea to develop some routines for the work place that can combat the negative affect of sitting still for 8+ hours. Also make sure to include some mobility exercises to help with the spine, hips, and shoulders joints. To say I’m obsessed with this position would be an understatement. The “power line position” as it is sometimes referred to, in the acceleration phase of sprinting is present in most field and court based sports. I have learned not to put more time into it than I deem necessary for the athlete based on their sport and other factors but it is a priority to correct and develop. We see this position in the first 3-5 strides of an athlete’s acceleration phase either statically at the start or dynamically after a change of direction. This represents what most people call “first step quickness.” It must be taught and can be functional after a relatively short period time (3 weeks to 3 months) depending on consistency and athletic ability and mastered soon after that. This is just a small amount of time in any athlete’s career especially considering its role and importance in sport. It is paramount to prioritize technical mechanics while learning sport specific skill, fundamental strength strength training and flexibility as they learn, grow and develop as people and athletes. ‘Doing‘ a swing is very different to ‘performing’ a swing! Oh and what a difference 10 minutes of coaching can make! . The swing is a hip hinge movement, with head still and back neutral. . DO NOT.... Squat it (bum going to floor) . Do not look up causing the neck to flex/extend and you to aggressively nodding! . Do not flex or extend the lower back. Keep it in the same curve as when you stand. .
