Our own Swedish Edmonds nurse Stefan Torres was the winner of the 2018 It Takes a Nurse Video Challenge. In this educational video, Stefan talks about how he builds a Culture of Health both through his work at Swedish and off the clock. Using his nursing knowledge, he makes educational videos that inspire his viewers to live healthier lives. Swedish audiologist Mary Henry manned a table at one of our hospitals recently to educate patients on vestibular and balance disorders. These disorders are largely invisible and can be very debilitating to quality of life. Vestibular rehabilitation is balance treatment. Through treatment, patients learn exercises to help minimize dizziness, nausea and keeping balance. Depending on the patient, treatment can consist of stretching, learning to focus your eyes appropriately to maintain balance, or ways to turn your head or move without getting dizzy. #swedishseattle #balance

Guan, a caregiver at Swedish Edmonds, has officially become a US citizen. Guan came from China 13 years ago, where his parents still reside. He began his time in America as a fast food cook and eventually joined Swedish as an environmental services (EVS) worker. After working in the EVS department at Swedish Edmonds, he transferred to the operating room to be trained as a transporter/aide. Through his hard work and passion for learning, he made his way to the Endoscopy department. “If you believe in yourself, you can do anything. There is so much opportunity to learn if you are looking forward, not back," says Guan. #swedishseattle #diversity #caregiversatswedish

This is Lily.⠀ ⠀ This is also the expression on her face the vast majority of the time.⠀ ⠀ She is the sweetest, happiest, chillest baby.⠀ ⠀ She’s already had multiple surgeries.⠀ ⠀ We found out today that she has to have another.⠀ ⠀ We got the results of her test, and her left kidney has to be removed and possibly surgical repairs made to her right.⠀ ⠀ I feel surprisingly zen. ⠀ ⠀ I know we are going to fight like hell and also be just fine.⠀ ⠀ But if you see a stressed out mom getting fries at McDonald’s, don’t assume she’s fat and lazy and stupid.⠀ ⠀ Maybe she just had a 1.5 hour appointment at the Children’s hospital with her infant turn into a 5+ hour ordeal. Maybe she hasn’t eaten all day even though it’s dinner time.⠀ ⠀ And maybe, just maybe, we as a culture could stop applying shame to food and admit that a medium fries won’t heal kidneys but they will help a tired, stressed, and hurting mama enjoy the pleasure of salty crispy fries for this one moment in time.

September is #bloodcancerawarenessmonth. We recently celebrated our survivors with the @leukemialymphomasociety at the Swedish Cancer Institute at First Hill during our #lightthenight walk. #lightthenight funds treatment, support services and research for patients with blood cancer, but it is also an occasion to inspire hope, to celebrate survivors and honor those touched by cancer. #swedishseattle #cancersurvivors #lls

#tbt: Some of our amazing nurses at the Belmont Avenue Swedish Hospital in 1910. The nurses who staffed the hospital lived close by in an adjacent house. Swedish had operated a nursing school since 1910. Washington passed legislation in 1909 required that nurses complete a course of study and be certified by a licensing board. This led to a proliferation of nursing schools run by hospitals, including Swedish. #swedishseattle #historicalphotos #historyofhealthcare #nurses

Repost: @pnwtxn_: 🏥 // Eight months ago, I started working at Swedish. And every single day that I go into work I feel obsessively grateful... I’m coming up on 18 years cancer free and I’m so grateful for that fact. But at the same time I care for patients who I’ve become close to over time fighting in the battle of their lives. I will never know why nor how I became one of those “lucky” ones, but I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity and help them in any way I possibly can. This is why I work in oncology. And this is my reason for being. Because all I want to fulfill in my life is knowing that I made my late parents proud and that I can also stand before God someday knowing that I used all of my life experiences for His good. “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.” - John 11:4 #swedishseattle #weloveournurses #oncology

#patientstory: "I was a patient of Dr. Porter, partial nephrectomy room 1154. The day after my surgery, RN Sean came into my room to stop a beeping machine, he was not the RN assigned but became my rainbow on very cloudy days. I didn't get his last name. He was exemplary and a true healer. It was a difficult time and his sense of humor was great. He walked the halls with me, listened and was by my side. I'm grateful for the divine providence that sent him to my room to help. I was grateful he worked 12-hour shifts and was there Thursday and Friday from early morning to late at night. He outshines everyone else for his care and compassion. My cancer journey will always include my favorite nurse, Sean. He will always be a star in my universe. Sean would make a great teacher of how to care for someone but also be compassionate and see the human in the hospital, not just a room number or bed number." #swedishseattle #patientexperience #peopleofmedicine
