Last week, Swedish Medical Group Nurse Executive Donna Jensen was joined by Bonnie and Mark Barnes, co-founders of @thedaisyfoundation in presenting Margaret Jackson, RN with her DAISY award for her fantastic work in the Swedish Bainbridge Primary Care clinic. The DAISY foundation was founded in 1999 by the Barnes family after the sudden death of their son Patrick, who suffered from the auto-immune disease, ITP (Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura). The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses was created to honor the nurses who cared for Patrick during the last weeks of his life. The DAISY awards provide patients, families and colleagues a way of saying thank you to heroic, selfless nurses nationwide who provide compassionate care to the people who need it the most. #nurses #powernurse #swedishseattle #weloveournurses

Some of the first people that the girls ever saw were our amazing doctor team at Swedish. I felt so blessed that the two doctors I spent the most time with during my inpatient stay happened to be there on the day I went into labor. Dr. Araneta (or as the girls will call you “Auntie Nicki”), thank you for taking such good care of us. We were lucky to have you in that operating room and now in our lives forever❤️ #swedishseattle

A big thank you to our veterans for your service and your continued commitment to our communities. #veteransday #weloveourcaregivers #swedishseattle

Caregiver Constance Faircloth, RN served with the @usairforce from 1978-1987 and the @usarmy from 1987-2001. She transitioned to the Army after graduating from college and ROTC as a single parent. With both Air Force and Army, Constance’s units were involved in Iraq, Iran, El Salvador, Grenada, Honduras, Bolivia, Panama, Argentina and the Gulf War. She was the first female in an all male shop working on AC-130H gunships and the first female to tow that aircraft into a maintenance hangar. Constance was also present for the Women in Military Services induction ceremonies in Washington D.C. Thank you for your service! 🇺🇸 #veteransday #womeninmilitary #militarynurses #swedishseattle

“Those who serve in the military put other people and the mission ahead of their own personal well-being. That selfless service is very similar to that of health care professionals and Swedish caregivers in particular.” Originally from Bellevue, Wash., Dr. Chris Dale earned a BA in Chemistry from the @uofwa and an MD from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He went on to complete a transitional internship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego and became a naval flight surgery student at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Fl., He then served as a @usnavy flight surgeon with a squadron at Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, AZ. The heavy focus on team and individual operational efficiency to minimize errors and injury helped fuel Dr. Dale’s interest in system quality. He also learned what qualities he values in a leader; dedication, decisiveness, being humble and providing unwavering support to colleagues. Here at Swedish, Dr. Dale brings those values of leadership to his team and the greater Swedish system as Chief Quality Officer. #veteransday #swedishseattle #usnavy #caregiversatswedish

Nicole Roehrig, MSN, RN, CPN enlisted in the @usairforce as an active duty emergency medical technician upon graduating from high school. As a medic and EMT, Nicole was assigned to the Inpatient Pediatrics Unit at Wilford Medical Center at Lackland Air Force Base, which allowed her exposure to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Unit. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, Nicole was part of a medical team who deployed to New York to help triage and recover victims. She was also able to serve on an overseas mission during Operation Enduring Freedom and worked in the Emergency Department triage. After an honorable discharge, Nicole received her BSN and MSN and began working for Swedish as a traveling nurse. She began a permanent role with Swedish in 2010 and now serves in the role of Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist. "My hope is that the core values I learned in the Air Force are shared daily to the caregivers and patients I serve; Integrity First, Service Before Self, Excellence in All We Do." Thank you for your service, Nicole. We are lucky to have you at Swedish! #swedishseattle #veteransday #veterannurses

Before caregiver Rick Gordon joined Swedish, he served in the @usarmy and the @nationalguard. First Lieutenant Richard (Rick) Gordon Jr. served as a medic in the Army Reserve from 2000-2004, an engineer platoon leader for the Utah and Pennsylvania @NationalGuard from 2004-2011, and served as a 2nd Platoon Leader in the 856th Engineer Company on deployment for Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2008-2009. Rick is now an RN-BSN, JD supporting employee health at Swedish. We are grateful for his selfless service in the military and his impactful work supporting caregiver health here at Swedish. #veteransday #veterannurses #swedishseattle #thankaveteran

It’s hard to believe that a few short months ago, a wonderful group of nurses (not all are pictured here, although I wish they were!) cared for me around the clock. Not only were they my medical saviors, but I am lucky to call them my friends. When you spend an extended amount of time in the hospital, you never truly know what to expect. I lucked out because this group is nothing but spectacular and made my stay fly by. So much love to the nurses in Swedish’s Antepardum department. ❤️❤️❤️ #nursesrule #swedishseattle

Swedish audiologist Mary Henry manned a table at one of our hospitals recently to educate patients on vestibular and balance disorders. These disorders are largely invisible and can be very debilitating to quality of life. Vestibular rehabilitation is balance treatment. Through treatment, patients learn exercises to help minimize dizziness, nausea and keeping balance. Depending on the patient, treatment can consist of stretching, learning to focus your eyes appropriately to maintain balance, or ways to turn your head or move without getting dizzy. #swedishseattle #balance

Guan, a caregiver at Swedish Edmonds, has officially become a US citizen. Guan came from China 13 years ago, where his parents still reside. He began his time in America as a fast food cook and eventually joined Swedish as an environmental services (EVS) worker. After working in the EVS department at Swedish Edmonds, he transferred to the operating room to be trained as a transporter/aide. Through his hard work and passion for learning, he made his way to the Endoscopy department. “If you believe in yourself, you can do anything. There is so much opportunity to learn if you are looking forward, not back," says Guan. #swedishseattle #diversity #caregiversatswedish

Who is attending Sunday's parade celebrating the @seattlestorm ? #swedishseattle #seattlebasketball

This is Lily.⠀ ⠀ This is also the expression on her face the vast majority of the time.⠀ ⠀ She is the sweetest, happiest, chillest baby.⠀ ⠀ She’s already had multiple surgeries.⠀ ⠀ We found out today that she has to have another.⠀ ⠀ We got the results of her test, and her left kidney has to be removed and possibly surgical repairs made to her right.⠀ ⠀ I feel surprisingly zen. ⠀ ⠀ I know we are going to fight like hell and also be just fine.⠀ ⠀ But if you see a stressed out mom getting fries at McDonald’s, don’t assume she’s fat and lazy and stupid.⠀ ⠀ Maybe she just had a 1.5 hour appointment at the Children’s hospital with her infant turn into a 5+ hour ordeal. Maybe she hasn’t eaten all day even though it’s dinner time.⠀ ⠀ And maybe, just maybe, we as a culture could stop applying shame to food and admit that a medium fries won’t heal kidneys but they will help a tired, stressed, and hurting mama enjoy the pleasure of salty crispy fries for this one moment in time.

#tbt: Some of our amazing nurses at the Belmont Avenue Swedish Hospital in 1910. The nurses who staffed the hospital lived close by in an adjacent house. Swedish had operated a nursing school since 1910. Washington passed legislation in 1909 required that nurses complete a course of study and be certified by a licensing board. This led to a proliferation of nursing schools run by hospitals, including Swedish. #swedishseattle #historicalphotos #historyofhealthcare #nurses

“No measure of time with you will be long enough. But let’s start with forever.” This past week we celebrated 30 days of life, which in Chinese tradition is usually commemorated with a special party with family and friends (and pink eggs!). While we have had an overwhelmingly positive stay so far, Jade did have a significant event over the weekend that required her to be revived. She is doing great now, and the doctors tell us she will grow out of this; it’s just so hard to standby and not be able to do anything. Everyday is a reminder to us of how lucky we are to have beat the odds of having Momo twins and to have these two beautiful girls who have chosen us as their parents. We won’t just be celebrating their 30 days of life; we will be celebrating everyday for the next thousands of days. In milestone news the girls are continuing to progress and try new things with feeding. They’ve passed 1 of 4 feeding phases, as well as weight goals (yay for surpassing 5 pounds!). As soon as the girls pass the remaining 3 phases we’re looking at coming home in as soon as 2 weeks! Get it girls!❤️❤️#nicubaby #nicubabies #nicu #premies #swedishseattle #seattle #twins #momotwins

Repost: @pnwtxn_: 🏥 // Eight months ago, I started working at Swedish. And every single day that I go into work I feel obsessively grateful... I’m coming up on 18 years cancer free and I’m so grateful for that fact. But at the same time I care for patients who I’ve become close to over time fighting in the battle of their lives. I will never know why nor how I became one of those “lucky” ones, but I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity and help them in any way I possibly can. This is why I work in oncology. And this is my reason for being. Because all I want to fulfill in my life is knowing that I made my late parents proud and that I can also stand before God someday knowing that I used all of my life experiences for His good. “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.” - John 11:4 #swedishseattle #weloveournurses #oncology

#patientstory: "I was a patient of Dr. Porter, partial nephrectomy room 1154. The day after my surgery, RN Sean came into my room to stop a beeping machine, he was not the RN assigned but became my rainbow on very cloudy days. I didn't get his last name. He was exemplary and a true healer. It was a difficult time and his sense of humor was great. He walked the halls with me, listened and was by my side. I'm grateful for the divine providence that sent him to my room to help. I was grateful he worked 12-hour shifts and was there Thursday and Friday from early morning to late at night. He outshines everyone else for his care and compassion. My cancer journey will always include my favorite nurse, Sean. He will always be a star in my universe. Sean would make a great teacher of how to care for someone but also be compassionate and see the human in the hospital, not just a room number or bed number." #swedishseattle #patientexperience #peopleofmedicine

Repost from Swedish chief of Pediatrics @elizabethmeademd: Still 🔥🔥🔥 in Seattle. We’re spending as much time on the water as we can. It’s a great way to cool off, but remember water safety rules to stay safe! - PFDs (life jackets) for everyone in deep water - kids and adults! “Floaties” and water wings don’t count. - Keep an eye on kids at all times, no matter how good a swimmer they usually are. - Kids <5 need “touch supervision” - they should be within arm’s length from you at all times. - Drowning doesn’t look like it does in the movies - it’s often silent. Keep an eye out for swimmers with their mouth at or under water level, head tilted back with mouth open, hair over forehead or eyes, hyperventilating/gasping, trying to swim or roll over on their back but not making progress, or “ladder-climbing” with their limbs. Follow Dr. Meade on Instagram: @elizabethmeademd #summersafety #summerfun #swedishseattle #seattlesummer

Swedish is proud partner of the @SeattleKingCountyClinic. Over the past 4 years, the Seattle King County Clinic provided $3.7 million in free dental, vision, medical and behavioral health care, as well as social services to 16,233 patients. In 2017, more than 70 Swedish caregivers donated their time to provide compassionate care to the community. “I started volunteering with the Seattle King County Clinic in 2015. Though I wasn’t involved with direct patient care, the atmosphere was permeated with love, compassion, and gratitude at a level I had never experienced. We were swamped with demand and smiling, buried beneath dump trucks of work and loving it. Since my first year I have returned twice and am preparing to return again this year, enthralled with the mission of the Seattle King County Clinic. It is the greatest opportunity to love on the Puget Sound and Seattle communities.” – Joshua H., Swedish caregiver #swedishseattle #healthyseattle #communitybenefit #seattlekingcountyclinic

#caregiverstory: "Recently during a presentation, I was going over ADA devices we have in our clinics to familiarize the new caregivers with what we offer to our patients with disabilities. When I was describing pocket talker audio device and neckloop coupler, Krista B., one of our new caregivers attending the class, mentioned that she had worn hearing aids for the last 10 years. She also said when she wears her hearing aid she hears all kinds of background noises, which makes it hard for her to focus when in conversation. I asked her if she wanted to try the pocket talker with neckloop, which reduces the background noises for people who wear hearing aids. Krista agreed and I put the neckloop around her neck. Krista immediately got emotional and said, “this is the first time in 10 years I have heard this clearly.” Everybody in the class got emotional and I let her keep the pocket talker. I got teary eyed as well, it was probably one of my best moments at Swedish." - Shared by Manu K., Swedish Nurse #swedishseattle #hearingaid #inspiration #weloveournurses

Swedish is joining Pearl Jam and other local businesses in a campaign to end homelessness in Western Washington. As part of this initiative, Swedish is supporting a modular shelter project that will house 72 people per night, addressing the immediate crisis of people living in unsafe encampments. Swedish is proud to participate in Pearl Jam’s campaign to end homelessness in King County, which has the third worst homeless situation in the country, worse even than Los Angeles and New York. The band is donating $1 million to the cause and is challenging local businesses to rally around this issue. To raise awareness about the homeless crisis and engage the community, Pearl Jam is playing two concerts on Aug. 8 and 9. This is their first live performance in five years, and it’s expected to be one of the largest concerts in Seattle history. A couple of months ago I made a very cryptic post about MRIs and chronic illness and mentioned an upcoming show I'm in - this is it! . I don't talk about MS often (ever?) because I've been lucky enough that it doesn't play a big part in my life and I never know *how* to talk about it casually. I've been mostly relapse and symptom free (aside from fatigue which is FINALLY getting better!) pretty much since my diagnosis four years ago - but I know MS is always going to be part of me. This art show is a positive way to both acknowledge this and be grateful that I'm able to make art. Also - I see a specialist at @swedish_seattle MS center and I've always gotten amazing care there. I leave my appointments feeling better than I did when I came in! Being a part of the Swedish MS Center Art Show is super exciting, and I can't wait to go next weekend to see all the work on display! .
