On August 3, the @SeattleStorm wore pink jerseys as part of the ‘Why We Wear Pink’ breast health and breast cancer awareness campaign. The campaign focused on 12 women: doctors, current and former Swedish Cancer Institute patients, who have been deeply impacted by breast cancer, featuring their journey and resilience in their fight against cancer. Swedish breast surgeon and breast cancer survivor Dr. Karen Hendershott was interviewed by Storm guard Sue Bird. Repost: @pnwtxn_: 🏥 // Eight months ago, I started working at Swedish. And every single day that I go into work I feel obsessively grateful... I’m coming up on 18 years cancer free and I’m so grateful for that fact. But at the same time I care for patients who I’ve become close to over time fighting in the battle of their lives. I will never know why nor how I became one of those “lucky” ones, but I’m going to take advantage of this opportunity and help them in any way I possibly can. This is why I work in oncology. And this is my reason for being. Because all I want to fulfill in my life is knowing that I made my late parents proud and that I can also stand before God someday knowing that I used all of my life experiences for His good. “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.” - John 11:4 #swedishseattle #weloveournurses #oncology

#patientstory: "I was a patient of Dr. Porter, partial nephrectomy room 1154. The day after my surgery, RN Sean came into my room to stop a beeping machine, he was not the RN assigned but became my rainbow on very cloudy days. I didn't get his last name. He was exemplary and a true healer. It was a difficult time and his sense of humor was great. He walked the halls with me, listened and was by my side. I'm grateful for the divine providence that sent him to my room to help. I was grateful he worked 12-hour shifts and was there Thursday and Friday from early morning to late at night. He outshines everyone else for his care and compassion. My cancer journey will always include my favorite nurse, Sean. He will always be a star in my universe. Sean would make a great teacher of how to care for someone but also be compassionate and see the human in the hospital, not just a room number or bed number." #swedishseattle #patientexperience #peopleofmedicine

Repost from Swedish chief of Pediatrics @elizabethmeademd: Still 🔥🔥🔥 in Seattle. We’re spending as much time on the water as we can. It’s a great way to cool off, but remember water safety rules to stay safe! - PFDs (life jackets) for everyone in deep water - kids and adults! “Floaties” and water wings don’t count. - Keep an eye on kids at all times, no matter how good a swimmer they usually are. - Kids <5 need “touch supervision” - they should be within arm’s length from you at all times. - Drowning doesn’t look like it does in the movies - it’s often silent. Keep an eye out for swimmers with their mouth at or under water level, head tilted back with mouth open, hair over forehead or eyes, hyperventilating/gasping, trying to swim or roll over on their back but not making progress, or “ladder-climbing” with their limbs. Swedish is proud partner of the @SeattleKingCountyClinic. Over the past 4 years, the Seattle King County Clinic provided $3.7 million in free dental, vision, medical and behavioral health care, as well as social services to 16,233 patients. In 2017, more than 70 Swedish caregivers donated their time to provide compassionate care to the community. “I started volunteering with the Seattle King County Clinic in 2015. Though I wasn’t involved with direct patient care, the atmosphere was permeated with love, compassion, and gratitude at a level I had never experienced. We were swamped with demand and smiling, buried beneath dump trucks of work and loving it. Since my first year I have returned twice and am preparing to return again this year, enthralled with the mission of the Seattle King County Clinic. It is the greatest opportunity to love on the Puget Sound and Seattle communities.” – Joshua H., Swedish caregiver #swedishseattle #healthyseattle #communitybenefit #seattlekingcountyclinic

#caregiverstory: "Recently during a presentation, I was going over ADA devices we have in our clinics to familiarize the new caregivers with what we offer to our patients with disabilities. When I was describing pocket talker audio device and neckloop coupler, Krista B., one of our new caregivers attending the class, mentioned that she had worn hearing aids for the last 10 years. She also said when she wears her hearing aid she hears all kinds of background noises, which makes it hard for her to focus when in conversation. I asked her if she wanted to try the pocket talker with neckloop, which reduces the background noises for people who wear hearing aids. Krista agreed and I put the neckloop around her neck. Krista immediately got emotional and said, “this is the first time in 10 years I have heard this clearly.” Everybody in the class got emotional and I let her keep the pocket talker. I got teary eyed as well, it was probably one of my best moments at Swedish." - Shared by Manu K., Swedish Nurse #swedishseattle #hearingaid #inspiration #weloveournurses

Swedish is joining Pearl Jam and other local businesses in a campaign to end homelessness in Western Washington. As part of this initiative, Swedish is supporting a modular shelter project that will house 72 people per night, addressing the immediate crisis of people living in unsafe encampments. Swedish is proud to participate in Pearl Jam’s campaign to end homelessness in King County, which has the third worst homeless situation in the country, worse even than Los Angeles and New York. The band is donating $1 million to the cause and is challenging local businesses to rally around this issue. To raise awareness about the homeless crisis and engage the community, Pearl Jam is playing two concerts on Aug. 8 and 9. This is their first live performance in five years, and it’s expected to be one of the largest concerts in Seattle history. We hope to see you there! #pearljam #swedishseattle #communitybenefit #helpthehomeless

Start your week off by practicing #mindfulness. Mindfulness is defined as a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. This practice is thought to reduce anxiety and stress, increase brain and immune function, lower blood pressure and heart rate and more. #swedishinspiration #swedishseattle

Stefan, one of our registered nurses at Swedish Edmonds, earned the 1st place prize in a nationwide Nurses Week contest, for his efforts to help build a culture of health both on and off the clock. The contest was sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), one of the nation’s largest healthcare philanthropy organizations. RWJF flew an award-winning professional New York-based production team into Seattle to direct a short documentary segment on Stefan’s passion for demonstrating and promoting the health and well-being of our community. Meet Josh, a Swedish caregiver who is proud to protect our patients and staff. "For the past 20 years, my life has been law enforcement and security focused. I earned my Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and my Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration. For the past 16 years, I have owned and operated my own private security companies in the greater Puget Sound area while serving my community just south of Seattle as a police officer. In 2011, I sold one of my private security companies and wanted to jump into corporate America in the security capacity. I interviewed in 2012 and accepted a position as system trainer for 70+ security officers across Swedish. I remember walking out of my job interview out to my vehicle where my wife was waiting and telling her that I was going to retire at Swedish. There is something special about the culture at Swedish and the feeling of serving a hospital. From that day in October 2012, I hit the ground running learning everything I could about patient-centered and focused healthcare. I am so excited to serve the community, Swedish, it’s patients, staff, and visitors on a daily basis. There is no better time in history to be in security than now. Security is not only our nation’s number one priority but at Swedish, it is our number priority for our patients. I am proud to be a part of the Swedish family and look forward to continuing serving for many years to come." #caregiverstory #mywhy #swedishseattle

A couple of months ago I made a very cryptic post about MRIs and chronic illness and mentioned an upcoming show I'm in - this is it! . I don't talk about MS often (ever?) because I've been lucky enough that it doesn't play a big part in my life and I never know *how* to talk about it casually. I've been mostly relapse and symptom free (aside from fatigue which is FINALLY getting better!) pretty much since my diagnosis four years ago - but I know MS is always going to be part of me. This art show is a positive way to both acknowledge this and be grateful that I'm able to make art. Also - I see a specialist at @swedish_seattle MS center and I've always gotten amazing care there. I leave my appointments feeling better than I did when I came in! Being a part of the Swedish MS Center Art Show is super exciting, and I can't wait to go next weekend to see all the work on display! . See this piece (and others!) next weekend at the @seattlecenter Armory from 10am - 6pm, Saturday AND Sunday 😘 . . . #swedishmscenter #swedishseattle #ms #multiplesclerosis #mswarrior #msartshow #keepsmyelin #chronicillness #chronicbabe #nmss @mssociety #chronicillnessawareness #spoonie #spoons #autoimmunedisease #autoimmune #artforchange #seattleartist #seattle #seattleart #seattleevents #art #artofinstagram #artistsoninstagram #watercolor #watercolorart #cats #catsofinstagram #spoonieartist #artoftheday @multiplesclerosisawareness
