The squat is one of the most technical movements out there. It’s also one of my favorites, for good reason! The barbell squat requires leg and core strength, mobility, and coordination. I’ve heard trainers say there are 30 cues for a proper squat. I would say there are more like 100 cues for a proper squat. I’m working on perfecting my form every time I lift. I loved this wide arm row from a back workout yesterday. How amazing is the sun by the way? • Top tips to get the most out of it? Squeeze between your shoulder blades. Try to think about keeping your shoulders back at the bottom of the move keeping tension rather than the weights pulling you forward. My new focus was pulling my shoulders away from my ears as I squeezed my shoulders the top. @trainingiq has my snatch and power cleans looking better every day! First 2 clips is snatch, today vs last month. Second two is power cleans, today vs last month. The biggest improvement I see is that I no longer pull early. You can clearly see in the second clip (blue shirt), I pull before I stand or extend my hips for both movements. Also more comfortable with added weight and catching the bar. @trainingiq Welcome to week 9! Story time: This program has me doing more snatch work than anything else, which is exactly what I need. My snatch and overhead squat have been the bane of my lifts. I'll be honest, I rarely would train this movement and opt for cleans instead, which only hurt my progress over the last year. Well, trainingiq won't let me hide from it anymore. Snatch 6 sets up to 100lbs nearly every training day. My depth has improved, but still more work to go. This video shows slight curved back in my start position and a struggle getting to parallel. But night and day from where I started. Why am I doing this? I don't think I've ever opened up to IG so here it goes. I want to compete in the CrossFit Open. I want to go to Regionals. And I want to go to the Games. Some people would LIKE to do these things, but I WANT it. I'm hungry for it. My whole weekly routine revolves around it. My strategy: Thinking about a quote from @benbergeron "conditioning takes months, strength takes years" so I've reduced my conditioning to bring my lift numbers up while practicing skills like swimming, handstands, muscle ups, etc. I still do a good 5k run 1-2 times a week and might do a traditional wod once a week. Otherwise, I need certain lift numbers to play. The price of admission to the CF open/regionals is at least a snatch at 235lbs, among other lifts with their own baselines. I have about 110lbs to add and will get there in time. I think trainingiq will get me there. My numbers in all lifts have already gone up over the last 9 weeks thanks to trainingiq focusing on technique. I also have to thank @benbergeron for the chasing excellence pod cast, where most of the above strategy was found. I'm sure having a dedicated coach would be better, but short of that, this has been an incredible impact on my mindest and training approach. Thank you Ben New @trainhylete shoes and shorts! Sorry the vid cuts out the shoes, but they are there! And I can't lift without my trusty 2004 iPod. First day at the new location and first day back with the barbell- no pain! Instead of loading weight on the bar, I kept it just the barbell and focused on technique. I was able to notice that if I switch legs in the split, I am able to get lower in my catch and feel more stable. Time to take this and see what more I can do! Here at Port City, we focus on technique well before weight. Everyone starts light to ensure that the basics and a proper foundation is built. We are not a club or coaches dedicated to giving students heavy bells, just because. If you prefer to lift heavy and focus solely on numbers - let’s be honest, we aren’t the club for you. . . Being able to increase your bell weight isn’t something you just get. These bells are earned. These bells take time and many, many training sets that can feel like a grind. No hay nada mejor que ver cuando alguien trata de dar siempre lo maximo en cada entrenamiento , ir a entrenar no ir a perder tiempo , cn una alimentacion estructurada dependiendo tus objetivos , mas un entreniento inteligente en la cual nos guiemos mas en los rangos de movimientos y en la tension muscular , el peso llega solo con el tiempo , LA TECNICA es lo primordial , aprendiendo a activar los musculos de manera correcta utilizando siempre el musculo sin trampas (activando mas musculos como ayuda ) que es lo que normalmente hacen todos , un ejemplo gente haciendo curl biceps que mueven hombros espalda doblan las muñecas y pierden el enfoque realizado netamente al musculo , @rodrigozuzunaga siempre llevando au treno a otro level , porque ya se dio cuenta que mas vale hacer pocas exelentes repeticiones a muchas malisimas repeticiones , a seguir dandole manitoooo esta semana que empiezas tu nueva rutina vamos a romper tus limites ! #techniquebeforeweight #legday #strong

What happened when I lowered the weight? Increased rom (range of motion) Quite often in our workouts or programs there will be a point where we look/want to progress. Progress. Must be earned. If you're progressing weight and compensating the movement or rom then you most probably need to drop the weight back down. Sometimes it depends on your goal and what you're trying to achieve. Sometimes it Can be a case of dropping down for periods and then going up again. But anyway. You'll see the movement looks better than a previous effort at 60kg. Although it was fine i felt it needed to go lower. I was compensating on rom. By increasing the rom I get more nervous system response and time under tension. Game time, go time, fun time. As a celebration of their fitness and endless sessions of hard work, some decide to enter crossfit competitions. This year no less than 4 CFG teams qualified for the Walter’s Cup Throwdown: The Mama Bears (Meia & Stéphanie), The Kelly’s (Kelly & Bram), CFG Swoldiers (Yasmine & Coach Kevin), Gimli&Gosling (Coach Jonas & Coach Dries). Here's a different sort of #transformationtuesday for you. Found an old video of me trying to do some power cleans from way back when, before I started at #crossfit121212, before I did my first cycle of the Olympic Weightlifting Coach Rodney put me on. And yup... my cleans were a hot mess. No hip drive whatsoever, bar path went pretty wonky at the top, entire pull was upper body... Though I didn't reverse curl it, so there's that haha. On the right are some power cleans from this Saturday, before the clinic I ran on presses at #crunchfitness. Drive comes from the hips, full extension is reached, patient to get to said extension before shrugging and getting elbows high. Bar stays close to the body throughout the rep, bar path is straight. Not to say I am at the end of my oly lifting journey - there will always be things to work on. Give it another 3 years and I'm sure I'll be face palming over all the things I'm posting right now (especially chicken-wing muscle ups). My birthday is officially over and it's back to the grind! I really appreciate that I've learned to listen to my body after what feels like a lifetime of high intensity training from my early years as a gymnast to my group fitness career. Today's session was my first as a 45 year old (😆) and it was all about working smarter, not harder, after having some down time from my lifting. My goal is to stay strong and keep moving for another 45 years, so my days of being a gym hero are over - these days I'm all about listening to my body, and being kind to it when it needs it. It doesn't mean I slack off or goof around though! **DEADLIFTS** I took rob on his 3rd PT session last night and I asked him to perform a deadlift for me....going by the first clip it's obvious that he had never performed the movement before, so I spent a good 45 minutes teaching him how to perform a deadlift in what I believe is the correct way, surely it's easy right? Pick the weight up off the floor and put it back down. Wrong there's a lot more to it than that, in the video there is however a quick fix to help you improve your technique by using just a pole, basically keep the pole in contact with your head and the top of your hips to help maintain a neutral head and spine which also teaches you how to HINGE from the HIPS, not BEND the lower back! Knowing the difference between a hinge and a bend is imperative to the deadlift as one can prevent injury and the other can cause injury. The video in the top right was from when Ben first started at the gym and you can see he was really struggling to find the correct positions to get into and there was a lot of rounding which was going to cause him some issues!
