If you asked me a few weeks ago I would have said I wasn’t interested in making pens. After looking into it and figuring out all the supplies I would need for my lathe, I placed an order and now I’m hooked. I have since then placed 2 more orders for more supplies. It’s so funny because I’ve walked passed the pen turning isle at #woodcraft several times and didn’t give it a thought. #learningisfun #trynewthings #woodturning #theprojectlady

The #coffeetable top is getting attention today. It’s all about sanding and smooth brush strokes (x3) for each side. With each coat it gets better and better. The color sample that was chosen matches - success! 🙌🏻 #commisionedwork #woodworking #oakwood #generalfinishes #transfast #theprojectlady

Onto the next project - a large square coffee table out of oak. I designed the legs on the computer and turned them today - fun to see them in real life. Apron pieces assembled and top pieces planed and ready to be doweled and glued. #oaktable #commissionedwork #woodturning #hurricaneturningtools #diy #girlswhobuild #walkerturnerlathe #theprojectlady

I’ve been busy the last week working on prepping the oak table for finish, applying finish, sanding, applying finish, sanding, applying finish. That’s right - it’s a huge job! I’ve found the best process is to spray the finish and use a brush to blend evenly and push into the pours of the oak. The top is too heavy to pull outside and flip over for each coat so I brushed the finish on inside the garage finishing the backside first and then the top. ALMOST DONE 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 (swipe to see pictures) #girlswhobuild #diy #woodworking #woodfinish #theprojectlady #woodshop

Here’s some finish samples I made for my customer. I like that you can achieve a darker color with each coat applied so you can take it one step at a time and decide when you want to stop. The darkest sample was achieved by increasing colorant nearly 40% with 3 coats (swipe to see products used). The weather here is finally clearing up for finishing! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 #generalfinishes #transfast #colorsamples #oaktable #commisionedwork #diy #woodfinishes #theprojectlady

Working on making some samples for the table finish. Adding a bit of gray #transfast colorant to the clear coat for a tint. Woodcraft recommended adding the M-1 product to help the flow and leveling of the clear coat from being sprayed. Has anyone used any of these products?- what did you think?#generalfinishes #makingarecipe #woodshop #sprayfinish #diy #theprojectlady

It’s taken me 3 separate glue ups to put the oak table top together. The boards are big and heavy and take a while to glue up with the dowels. There’ll be TONS of sanding tomorrow after cutting the ends to final size. #commisionedwork #oak #table #diy #girlswhobuild #theprojectlady #woodshop #woodworking

It feels good to be back in the shop working on the oak table! I ran a corner of each leg through the jointer a few times to make a flat edge to install hanger bolts (so legs will be removeable), then I made a jig for holding legs while drilling on the press. #oaktable #commisionedwork #woodworking #diy #shopmade #theprojectlady

Things are moving along with the oak table. After the kids went to bed last night I was in the zone and got a good upper body workout lifting the heavy boards to machine to size. My new planer blades got a knick in the first hour (joys of woodworking 😫😭), but progress feels good and these boards are gorgeous! #commisionedwork #oaktable #rawwood #theprojectlady

What saved this whole remodel for me was the last finishing touches. Steel wool is better than sandpaper at smoothing out finishes, especially in the crannies of trim. I wasn’t digging the high gloss paint on the hardware so the steel wool worked to distress them. TIP: The pad disintegrates in your hand over time and leaves a mess of metal fibers but it’s easy to vacuum! The other product that saved me was a tub of #pastewax - the finish was matte and dry before brushing it on, now the color is vivid and the finish is smooth and soft to the touch (TIP: helps wood-on-wood drawers to glide without catching!). #chinahutch #furniturerefinishing #theprojectlady

(@danicarbyelle)

2018-03-08 09:47:41

I had to fill in a lot of spots on the #chinahutch. The previous owners screwed several types of door catches on that weren’t necessary and really distracted from the design. It also looked like the bottom had been sitting in poor conditions because the veneer was chipped and peeling (swipe for pictures). Even though the veneer inside the base wouldn’t be visible, I’d be haunted if I didn’t do something about it. My idea was to glue and nail boards around the inside. The outside was rough as well and the best thing to do was add new trim, not only to cover it up but to also strengthen the structure and prevent further issues. #theprojectlady #furniturerefinishing

2018-03-08 09:17:51

It might sound a little over the top but I went to bed last night feeling a little sick to my stomach thinking of all the time I put into this China hutch because I wasn’t happy with how it turned out. Luckily I woke up refreshed and ready to work a little more. I’m OK with the end result but wish I was HAPPY about it. One thing I’ve realized is that I don’t enjoy refinishing furniture (the before and after pictures is what I love most NOT the process) and that I should be more selective when I buy antiques - this thing was in worse shape then I realized and wasn’t going to be a simple “one coat and it’s finished” kind of deal. I’ve also learned that being a perfectionist and wanting to do things right doesn’t always mix with my impatience. 🤗😬#lifeisalearningprocess #chinahutch #furniturerefinishing #theprojectlady
