Day 56. Doing some more research in an attempt to get out of my worldbuilding rut. I've been reading online about the geology of the Gulf of Mexico (really interesting regardless of purpose) and tackling this book on Cuba (I've been a fan of all things related to this fascinating country for many years). All in a bid to write an authentic alt-history for my setting which hits the right notes in terms of culture, politics and geology. 100 Days of Writing & Creating. #foxwritesfoxmakes #100daysofwriting #writersofinstagram #amwriting #amediting #writingcommunity #amreading #bookstagram #cuba #cubanliterature #tipsforwriters #adviceforwriters #novelresearch #thesmallhours #speculativefiction #specfic #althistory #worldbuilding #culture

To be successful in achieving your goals, mindset must play a huge role in getting there. To get to the place where you can say, “I did it,” a lot of work is needed, and that includes having the proper mindset. If you have the mindset that you simply can’t do it, chances are that you won’t. But if you start with the mindset that you want to do it, then you can begin taking the steps to getting it done. Which step are you on in reaching your goals? . . . . . . #thebeardedbookeditor #imakewritinglookgood #mondaymotivation #bookeditor #christianwriters #author #writingcommunity #christianwriter #writinginspiration #tipsforwriters #successhabits #monslay #authorgram #motivatedaily #goodquotes #christianauthors #creativewriting #writingismyfreedom #writersblock #writersconnection #writers_around #writerstruggles #tipsforauthors #writingtips #writingtip #writinginspiration #writingcommunityofig #writingadvice #writingmotivation #writingislife

Do you struggle to call yourself a writer? Do you feel like you have to put the word aspiring before the title because you haven’t “made it” yet? Let me tell you something: your ability to get comfortable with calling yourself a writer will drastically improve your ability to write the book. If you’re struggling to call yourself a writer I can almost guarantee you’re struggling to sit down and commit to doing the work at your computer on a consistent basis. If you think you need more education, or more recognition before you can say it... If you believe you need to be traditionally published, to hit a certain amount in sales, or to be able to pump out perfect prose as soon as your fingers hit the keyboard before you’re allowed to take on the title... it’s time to take the pressure off of yourself! Some of the most prolific and praised writers were relatively unknown in their time. Let that sink in. Let today be the day you make a change. Call yourself a writer because you know deep in your soul that you have a story to tell. Call yourself a writer because you’re committing to doing the work. Call yourself a writer because you’ve had this entire book floating around in your mind for years. Call yourself a writer because you’ve decided. Make it simple for yourself. This is a huge part of who you are. You tell stories and you change lives. Embrace the fact that it feels really good to say. Say it out loud right now. “I’m a writer.” Okay now tell me... because I’m equal parts nosy and excited for you! 😂 How did it feel? Seriously, drop it in the comments! 💕

#sharewithme What are some ways that you overcome fear? ⠀ ⠀ As an author, I think there is always fear of not producing something great. Something amazing! But we also can't (okay maybe we can haha) spend years on years sitting on unfinished or unpublished manuscripts because we fear that they won't be bomb af. Publish that book, sis (or bruh)! Stare fear in the face and remember how great you are. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #wocwritetoo #amwriting #readerscommunity #wocownedbusiness #fortheculture #womenwritersofcolor #womensupportingwomen #writerssupportingwriters #womenwritingfiction #blackownedbusiness #blackgirlsrock #blackgirlboss #blackgirlswrite #blackgirlsread #creativewriting #bookishlove #authorbellajay #writersofinstagramcommunity #writinginspiration #writingadvice #spilledwords #writerproblems #writingtips #writedreambelieve #selfpublishedauthor #indiesareworthit #blackgirlsrock #justkeepwriting #tipsforwriters⠀

This week we talk about how to socialize and network as an introvert. Which is really helpful for folks who choose to write in order to avoid talking to people. 😆 But first thing's first. You've gotta get your mind in order. If you start your networking by projecting fear, doubt, or lacking self-confidence you may find yourself hitting roadblock after roadblock. Instead, take a deep breath and be open to something good happening. And if that fails, remember almost all authors are just as awkward, anxious, and introverted as you.⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #writinginspiration #writinginspirations#writinginspirationalnotes #writinghelp #writingbooks #authorsofinstagram#authors #authorsofig #authorslife #indieauthors#americanauthors #womenauthors nonfictionwriters #fictionwriters #bloggersofinstagram #writing #writingadvice #writingadviceblog #writersdigest #tipsforwriters #writersblock #writersfollowwriters#writerswrite #screenwriters #writersgram

Repost from @author_ajkurtz: "Happy Thursday everyone! Hope all of you are having a fantastic week! I'm still hard at work on my rewrites. As all of us know, that's an ongoing battle 😂 Maybe it's easier for some, but I'm quite the procrastinater! I wanted to bring up flashback scenes because my upcoming book has a few. I have read books in the past that over do it and I would lose interest immediately. It's basically information overload. My tip for doing so is: only use flashback scenes when it's necessary and it drives the plot forward. You don't want to overwhelm your readers or give too much useless information that would make them grow bored of your story. ***Anything I post as a tip about writing is solely my opinion. You can take it as you will. I hope it's helpful in some way!" . . #writingtips #tipsforwriters #writersociety #writingcommunity #writers #writer #writerslife #writersofinstagram #indieauthors #indieauthor #authorsofinstagram #authorssupportingauthors #authorquestions #authorssupportingauthors #authorlife

Day 52. Tierra Lunar. So I haven't written much the past week, but I have been thinking over some world building elements. Sometimes this space away from the page is needed for the real cogitation to happen. I realised I needed a more specific setting for the fictional society of Borgesville ie a country of residence. Today I put some stuff down on paper describing Tierra Lunar (Moonland) a place which mysteriously emerged from the sea on the Gulf of Mexico sometime in the late 1970s. I've sent some info to my beta readers to get feedback on whether the concept should work. In the meantime this moon-design beer mat fell off my wall. Is it a sign? 100 Days of Writing & Creating. #foxwritesfoxmakes #100daysofwriting #writersofinstagram #amwriting #amediting #writingcommunity #tipsforwriters #adviceforwriters #100dayproject #writingchallenge #worldbuilding #thesmallhours #speculativefiction #specfic #magicrealism #whenyouarethemoon #moon

I remember in 2011 when I had an idea for a book and I had never written one before and I didn’t know any other authors. After a lot of work and falling forward I released Ride the Wave in Jan 2012. Fast forward to 2019 and I’ve written 5 books and published 2 others for @shinebeyondcancer and American Cop. Since then I’ve had a ton of people reach out to me wanting to write a book and not knowing where to start or how to do it. So I decided to put together this summer book writing course. Make this summer one to remember. The one you finally became an author!!! DM me for more details.

I recently had a conversation with a client on book positioning and thought to share here because it seems to be an issue a number of self-pub authors overlook, particularly in the Nigerian non-fiction space. First, your readers need your book to stand out from the rest so it can actually get their attention. Case in point: The babes in this photo. I mean, just look at them. They're kinda hard to miss on a bookstore's shelf, don't you think? Intentionality with design is key. Investing in a brilliant innovative graphics designer will go a long way as well. Secondly, find your message's uniqueness and push it forward as much as you can. No idea is truly original, agreed, but what's the unique angle you're approaching a question or issue from? Why should I read your book on making money when there are 1001 books like it in the market, or free blog posts online? Your readers need your unique spark so be committed to showing it. Whoever is meant to find and appreciate this spark will be supported to do just that. #foodforthought #thinkoutsidethebox #tipsforwriters #bookstagram

This is writing advice that I never took seriously and when I finally did, it transformed my mindset about writing. Writing is your job even if it’s not your only job. You must take it seriously if you’re going to finish a novel or two or three. Set a timer and make yourself write until it goes off. Happy writing! . . #happywriting💗 #happywriting #writingadvicewednesday #writerscorners #writershelp #writershelpwriters #writingbook #bookwritingtips #tipsforwriters #writersofigs #loveforpoems♥ #writingmynovel #mywritingprocess #thewritingprocess #writersandreaders #writersofinstagrampoetry #writewrite #writingtoday #currentlywriting #writeabook #readabooktoday #readalways #writealways #alwayswritingpapers #alwayswritingsomething #alwayswriting #somewherewriting #writemore

Every chapter should move the plot forward. Every chapter is a chance for the character’s arc to develop further. If a chapter could be deleted and the story would still develop properly or make sense, then maybe it needs to be cut ✂️ . . . . #writingadvicewednesday #writerscorners #writershelp #writershelpwriters #writingbook #bookwritingtips #tipsforwriters #writersofigs #loveforpoems♥ #writingmynovel #mywritingprocess #thewritingprocess #writersandreaders #writersofinstagrampoetry #writewrite #writingtoday #currentlywriting #writeabook #readabooktoday #readalways #writealways #alwayswritingpapers #alwayswritingsomething #alwayswriting #somewherewriting #writemore

#repost @elizabethmooreauthor • • • • • • Writing is unlike almost anything else you will ever decide to do. Do I need a script for a book? ⠀ Let's understand 👍 ⠀ The larger the product, the more the plan is necessary. If you write a story in two pages, you can keep an idea in your mind. But the longer the text is, the more heroes are, the easier it is to get confused. ⠀ The plan can prescribe the motives of the characters, the heroes, so that the choleric who appeared in the first chapter does not turn into phlegmatic, for example. ⠀ ⠀ Do you think it is necessary to write a plan? ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀ #tipsforwriters #tipsforyoungwriters #publishingsagency #translationagency #booktranslationagency #publishingabokk #myfirstbook #becomeawriter #planforbook #scriptforbook

When I decided that I wanted to write stories, I went to the enter net and spent hours asking, "How do you be a writer?" .... You... write.............

What is beautiful syllable? ⠀ To become a real writer you need the following: ⠀ ✔️ Sufficient vocabulary It’s not enough to know the meaning of a word, you need to train your memory so that you can remember the right word exactly when it is needed. ⠀ ✔️ Own style The style reflects the personality of the hero or author: his character, origin, and world views. The secret is to come up with and realize a vivid image. And this is a question of observation, imagination and diligence. ⠀ ✔️ The ability to convey emotions Emotionality is a special energy of the text, which makes the reader empathize with the characters. In order to write at this level, you need to be well versed in literary theory and know the tricks. The key points are the author’s passion for what he is writing about and the veracity of the description. ⠀ ✔️ New ideas The reader feels pleasure from the book if it somehow amazes him. It may be new ideas, images or deeply felt experiences and memories. ⠀ Skillfully written books expand horizons and change people's views. But to come up with something fundamentally new, you need to be well versed in what has already been written. So reading in its genre is a prerequisite for a successful writing career. ⠀ Good Luck! ⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #tipsforwriters #tipsforyoungwriters #publishingagency #translationagency #booktranslationagency #becomeawriter #becomeanauthor

Thinking outside the box is a seriously underestimated #writingchallenge! So many first-time authors have big expectations about publishing a book, and quickly become discouraged when the results are not what they expected them to be. Often times first-time authors skip over the process of building a following that leads to success. You aspire to be a national success, and that's awesome! However, I have to ask: does your local community know that you're an author? Your success as an author will come in phases. Don't skip the important phases. Each one matters.

We all have those people in our lives that we think are difficult to be around. Maybe they are obnoxious, arrogant, selfish, or any number of other character flaws. But here’s the problem: we all have character flaws. Every one of us has something about us that makes us difficult to be around at times. If we are able to recognize that, then we can humbly go forward and love the difficult people in our lives. After all, we are one of them. . . . . . #thebeardedbookeditor #imakewritinglookgood #mondaymotivation #bookeditor #christianwriters #author #writingcommunity #christianwriter #writinginspiration #tipsforwriters #successhabits #monslay #motivationday #motivatedaily #goodquotes #christianauthors #creativewriting #writingismyfreedom #writersblock #writersconnection #writers_around #writerstruggles #tipsforauthors #writingtips #writingtip #writinginspiration #writingcommunityofig #writingadvice #writingmotivation #writingislife

Happy Mother's Day to all our Mama Writers out there. This time last year, I was living with my parents as my mom started 12 weeks of chemo as part of her battle against breast cancer. I'm happy to say she's cancer free and I feel blessed for every moment I get to share with her. She's also become one of my biggest writing supporters. If you're a mom with a child that loves to write, support them, love them, give them space to be creative. You won't forget it and they will love you all the more for believing in them.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ *⠀⠀ *⠀⠀ *⠀⠀ *⠀⠀ *⠀⠀ #writinginspiration #writinginspirations #writinginspirationalnotes #writinghelp #writingbooks #authorsofinstagram #authors #authorsofig #authorslife #indieauthors #americanauthors #womenauthors #nonfictionwriters #fictionwriters #bloggersofinstagram #writing #writingadvice #writingadviceblog #writersdigest #tipsforwriters #writersblock #writersfollowwriters #writerswrite #screenwriters #writersgram #mamawriters #mothersday

#whyshewriteschallenge Day 7: Plotter or Pantser? I'd like to say I'm a little bit of both. I write out my blurb and a little one or two sentence summary of each chapter with my boxes and go from there. Most of the time, I have to rewrite my entire blurb because my characters just do whatever they want. Some chapters also turn out to be completely different than what I had planned but that's the beauty! I'd say I'm a "plantser" 😏👌 . Day 9: Writing Routine: Truthfully my routine is all over the place. Sometimes a scene comes to me and I type it out on my phone, other times I spend a few hours typing away on my computer. I don't have a job, I stay home with my kiddos, so most of the time when I write, this is what it looks like. During bathtime or right in front of my little stalker because she has to see my beautiful face at all times 🤣🤦‍♀️ #momlife . P.S this is me when I'm binging..hat on because I haven't showered in two days.. when you read Last Round though...YOUR WELCOME! #writer #author #write #writing #writerlife #writersofinsta #writersofig #writergram #writersofinstagram #authorsofinsta #authorsofig #authorsofinstagram #iwritebooks #writingbooks #writingnovels #writingabook #writinganovel #amwriting #writingcommunity #writingtips #writerstips #tipsforwriting #tipsforwriters #authortips #tipsforauthors #writingmotivation #writinghelp #writinginspiration #whyshewriteschallenge

Catching up on the #whyshewriteschallenge . Day 4: Writing snack: I normally don't snack, I just write. I forget to eat if I'm in one of those writing binges truthfully. But I always have a drink, usually gatorade. Today while editing I snacked on guac and chips 🙌 . Day 5: A women writer who inspires me. My first romance read was Sophie Kinsellas Shopoholic series. I remember going to the library taking out as many as I could and when the library didn't have I would have to go to the library in the town over to rent their copy! @sophiekinsellawriter . Day 6: My writing genre: I write contemporary romance/ new adult romance books. Day 45. ▲Writing nest for today▲ Today I'm getting stuck into a fresh chapter based on a dream I had this morning. There are several dream sequences in The Small Hours to reflect my protagonist, Izzy's, state of mind, but this dream was like a real life scene from the novel (thanks subconscious!) so I'm tweaking things to fit it in. There's a lakeside beach and later this beautiful architectural building which I need to try and capture in words! It's also a great setting to explore Izzy and Cyrus' relationship while adding some world building aspects. 100 Days of Writing & Creating. #foxwritesfoxmakes #100daysofwriting #writersofinstagram #amwriting #amediting #writingcommunity #worldbuilding #speculativefiction #specfic #tipsforwriters #adviceforwriters #novellayout #thesmallhours #novelediting #writingnest #dreams #subconscious #writersblog

There's nothing quite like a great novel! But there's a lot to writing a great book! That favourite novel that you hold in your hand is just the tip of a massive iceberg of effort and a toolbox of skills that have had to be used by the writer to create it. That initial, sometime fleeting idea for a story needs to be honed and developed to sustain, in my case, up to 170,000 words. Believable characters need to be given life to inhabit those many words. Three dimensional settings described in ways that transport the readers there. Memorable dialogue... sentences that you can quote long after you have closed that books pages. And all constructed with intricate research. A rhythm and pace to the plot that carries the reader along with it. Tensions, a great storyline that hooks and keep the reader reading... and which makes them laugh, cry, love, hate. There's nothing quite like a great novel! .............. If you want to learn how to write creatively... If you want to master the disciplines involved in herding together your creative thoughts... If you want to develop a unique writers voice and an authors psychology... Then I can help. I am THE BOOK SURGEON, Andy Oakes. Completely honored to have Donna Kshir #barnesandnobles #bestselling #author to dedicate #unmasked to me, with such kind words :0) .. #dedication says - To Michael John Rayner - "From the day I met you, you have shown me nothing but kindness and respect. If everyone saw the world from your eyes; what a better world we would live in." & Thank you so much for letting me be a featured author in #unmasked2 <3

There’s no reason to spend days and weeks (or months and years) perfecting prose that will only need to be changed or cut. First, perfect your story. Do the characters change? Is your dialogue realistic? Does the plot build with increasingly difficult complications? Does the story meet genre expectations? Does your pacing vary and build appropriately? Is the end surprising but inevitable Is your theme too weak or overwrought? Are there plot holes? Is there too much exposition or backstory? Is too much of the story summarized rather than shown through scenes? These are all questions to address before spending precious time and energy on the details of grammar and word choice. • What’s one thing you work on during the plot revision stage?

WRITING TIP 3/7 ‘We choose two town/village maps. We transfer street names from one to the other. This way we never lose sight of how far away the hospital, police station, railway is from the characters location, and the primary locations from each other. 🤗📚 Great feedback for our author talks! ‘Carol & Bob, You two are first class entertainers. The stories you tell with such enthusiasm and reality, are fascinating to hear, and the audience were very inspired by the true picture you painted about Police investigation and procedures. ‘ www.rcbridgestock.com #writingtips #writingtipwednesday #writingtipoftheday #writers #tipsforwriters #writershelpingwriters #writersoninstagram #writerslife #writerslifeforme #authors #authorslife #authorslifestyle #rcbridgestock #crimefiction #didylan #dijackdylan #dicharleymann

In episode two, we discussed "A Writer's Guide to Persistence," by Jordan Rosenfeld. She gives a lot of attention in the book to this idea that no writing is ever wasted. Several times throughout the writing process you may feel frustrated (hello revisions from hell, saggy middles, and plot holes galore). It is at those moments that I urge you to take a deep breath, dance it out, and remember that everything you write, even the darlings you have to kill, is a part of molding your story into its final spectacular version. #writinginspiration #writingeasy⠀ ⠀ ⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ *⠀ #writinginspiration #writinginspirations #writinginspirationalnotes #writinghelp #writingbooks #authorsofinstagram #authors #authorsofig #authorslife #indieauthors #americanauthors #womenauthors #nonfictionwriters #fictionwriters #bloggersofinstagram #writing #writingadvice #writingadviceblog #writersdigest #tipsforwriters #writersblock #writersfollowwriters #writerswrite #screenwriters #writersgram

[Feed experiment 3/7] ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Still trying out some things for my feed and I’m not having as much fun as I thought I would. 🤦🏽‍♀️ I guess I just don’t have a vision for what I want and I don’t have hard cover books for those on my TBR which is really killing my buzz 😒. But anyway... Also, I have a tendency of announcing things on my story and not my feed so I’m going to post everything from the past few days on this post. 🙆🏽‍♀️ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Three pieces of info coming at you now: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1 - Have you checked out my website? (Link in my bio!) I took a preview shot on my iPad above ☺️. So everything, book reviews and rants, are now on my website on the blog section. I’ve also added all the books I’ve written and am currently working on. And my current reads list is on there as well including a calendar of what I’m up to i.t.o writing. The desktop version offers more than the phone site so check it out on there for the full features. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2 - For tip Tuesday, I wanted to share a little trick for my writer followers. After finishing a draft, record a wrap up detailing changes you want to make and things you should remember when you start editing and rewriting. I did that for the past three projects I wrote and it has worked out well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3 - May is mental health awareness month and I wrote an article for @culturacolectivaplus about appreciating the small things in times of uncertainty (link in my bio!). Take care of yourself, not only this month but every single day. Your mind should be your number one priority. I’m also following the #dailycalm May calendar to go the extra mile. I post the prompts on my story everyday so check it out. 🤗

#tiptuesday courtesy of author Mary Cecilia Jackson, whose debut novel SPARROW will be released in March of 2020. • I’m constantly worried about time: ”What if I’ve missed my shot?” ”Other writers my age are further along in their careers, what am I missing?” ”What am I doing wrong?” • This was a nice reminder that we all have our own time schedules. It doesn’t matter what other writers are doing or where they may be in their writing journeys as long as you’re still writing and working on your journey. • • • #maryceciliajackson #qotd #quotestoliveby #writer #writers #writerslife #writingcommunity #writing #writingtips #tipsforwriters #writersofinstagram #writersofinsta #writersofig #author #book #books #bookstagram #screenwriter #screenwriting #screenwritersofinstagram #film #filmmaking #filmmaker #creative #storytelling #carpediem #siezetheday

#plot structure ... Does it flow? Does it stagger? Does it make sense as a whole? Does it give reasons for actions? This cool mural reminded me of the need to connect story elements. 🎨 🎨 🎨 #plot #storyelements #writingtips #writersthoughts #amwriting #fictionwriting #tipsforwriters 🎨 #sydney #originalphoto

This person was probably right... The #freedom to act and the freedom to be. The freedom to #writefreely. Makes me ponder ... a good book is enchanting but a great book frees the mind - #keepwriting people! 🍀 🍀 🍀 #dreambigwritebig #writerslife #writingprocess #writingprompts #writinginspiration #tipsforwriters #writingmotivation #keepwriting #fantasywriters #writersofinsta #fictionwriting 🍀 #londonderry #derry #originalphoto
