Reposted from @japan_at_war - During the Sengoku period, Odawara Castle had very strong defenses, as it was situated on a hill, surrounded by moats with water on the low side, and dry ditches on the hill side, with banks, walls and cliffs located all around the castle, enabling the defenders to repel attacks by Uesugi Kenshin in 1561 and Takeda Shingen in 1569. In 1587, the defences of the castle were greatly expanded by the Odawara Hōjō in anticipation of the coming conflict with Toyotomi Hideyoshi. However, during the Battle of Odawara in 1590, Hideyoshi forced the surrender of the Odawara Hōjō without storming the castle through a combination of a three-month siege and bluff. After ordering most of the fortifications destroyed, he awarded the holdings of the Odawara Hōjō to his leading general Tokugawa Ieyasu. #odawara #samurai #samuraiarmor #history #japaneseculture #budo #bushido #bujinkan #castle #art #kenjutsu #sword #katana #travel #martialarts #warrior #war #tokugawa #japan #japanesetattoo #ww1 #ww2 #viking #roman #medieval #knight

#nofilter #tbt #フィルターなし I was so excited about this photo, until I saw this photo 私はそれを見るまで、私はこの写真にとても興奮していました 💩💩💩 from wikipedia: "Himeji [not, as we thought, visible rising from the streetscape behind us] dates to 1333, when Akamatsu Norimura built a fort on top of Himeyama hill. The fort was dismantled and rebuilt as Himeyama Castle in 1346, and then remodeled into Himeji Castle two centuries later. Himeji Castle was then significantly remodeled in 1581 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who added a three-story castle keep. In 1600, #tokugawa Ieyasu awarded the castle to Ikeda Terumasa for his help in the Battle of Sekigahara, and Ikeda completely rebuilt the castle from 1601 to 1609, expanding it into a large castle complex. Several buildings were later added to the castle complex by Honda Tadamasa from 1617 to 1618. For over 400 years, Himeji Castle has remained intact, even throughout the extensive bombing of Himeji in World War II, and natural disasters such as the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake." #discoverjapan #japan #wanderlust #travelgram #throwback #traveljapan #日本 #summer #earlymornings #lovers #explorejapan #旅行

The last two panels of the Hikone Screen (c.1624 -1644;) Anonymous. A Japanese National Treasure; however, no one knows exactly who produced the famous six paneled work (Byobu.) These are the last two of six panels on the right side of the complete work; significant because they depict a Samurai warrior casually leaning on his sword. This is in the early part of the Tokugawa Shogunate, an internal 250 year period of national peace, when Japan closed itself off to the outside world (sakoku.) The Warrior’s slouching posture suggests that during this time of peace, even the Samurai, the great warrior caste of Japan, could relax to the point that they could treat the required weapons of their caste with casual indifference.

The #tokugawa #shōgun held the first #kagami #biraki (#鏡開き) #ceremony 300 years ago. On the eve of war, he gathered the #daimyō in his castle to break open a #sake cask. Upon achieving victory, a new #tradition was born in #japan. Nowadays a #kagami #mochi (#鏡餅) is traditionally broken and eaten in a #shinto #ritual on the second Saturday or Sunday of January. On this occasion, originally practiced by the #samurai, round #ricecakes or kagami mochi, previously stacked on a stand and placed in a household Shinto or #buddhist altar or #tokonoma as an offering to the deities that visit on New Year's, would be broken with a hammer before being eaten, symbolizing the mirror’s opening and the ending of the New Year’s #celebrations. The #kagamibiraki ceremony is an important ritual in a #japanese #martialarts #dojo, signifying the time has come for the first #practice of the #newyear. It was first adopted into Japanese #martial arts by the founder of #judo Kanō Jigorō in 1884, and since then this practice has spread to #aikido, #karate and #jujutsu.

Edo, Art in Japan, 1615 - 1868. This book documents the exhibition presented at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, in 1998 and 1999. The cover of the book is a portion of the Hikone Screen, a National Treasure, from the Hikone Castle Museum. The screen depicts, from Kyoto, the Four Leisurely Pursuits, of Music, the game of Go, Calligraphy and Painting. When the Tokugawa Shogunate closed Japan to the rest of the world (with the exception of Dejima Island, in Nagasaki Harbor, a strictly controlled Dutch trading space) and moved the capital from Kyoto to Edo, a fishing village near Yokohama, they created Tokyo, the “Eastern Capital,” out of Edo, which then became the world’s largest metropolis, and the center of a great alternative, insular and brilliant civilization, exclusive of the rising West. This 250 year peaceful flowering of artistic and cultural brilliance is the subject of this book, and of the exhibition in Washington, DC from twenty years ago. I never tire of exploring, being dazzled by, and contemplating the astonishing brilliance of the Edo era; 250 peaceful years of the pursuit of artistic excellence by a highly mannered, complex, extraordinarily talented, but closed society.

. #nikko #nikkotoshogu #tokugawa

The Shinsengumi were a special police force under the Tokugawa shogunate meant to protect shogunate officials in Kyoto. At its peak, the Shinsengumi had around 300 members composed mostly of samurai as well as other classes such as merchants, farmers, even doctors. As the Boshin War between Imperialist rebels and clans supportive of the shogunate raged on, the Shinsengumi would find themselves fighting in many major engagements of the conflict including the battles of Toba-Fushimi, Aizu, Miyako Bay, and all the way to the end of the war at the Battle of Hakodate. The Shinsengumi would meet its end in June of 1869 when the last remaining Shinsengumi under Soma Kazue surrendered at the Battle of Hakodate. It was this battle that would have imperial forces defeat the remnants of shogunate's supporters in the short-lived Ezo Republic and would mark the end of shogun's regime. #history #japan #boshinwar #shinsengumi #samurai #tokugawa #bafuku #edo #sketches #drawing
