What makes a “Turkish Get Up” Turkish? . StrongFirst recommended an article by Eastern European BJJ who shared: “Turkish Janissary soldiers used the movement as a part of their strength training. Turkish wrestlers were known to use kettlebells and they used to practice the turkish get up as well as a part of their strength regimen.” Soldiers and wrestlers like it. Ok cool. _ Key notes: 土耳其(tǔ'ěrqí) refers to Turkey the country. 起立 (qǐ lì) means stand up. _ Turkish Get Up is not my favorite movement - probably because I’m fearful that the kettlebell will drop onto my head. Türchen # 19 Turkish Get Up Ein unterschätzter Allrounder Eine Übung, die den Körper als Einheit trainiert, mehrere fundamentale Bewegungsmuster fordert und die Integration schult. Kraft, Stabilität, Beweglichkeit und Koordination werden gleichermaßen gefordert. Aufgrund der Komplexität der Übung bietet es sich an, den TGU in Teilbewegungen zu unterteilen und beispielsweise 1/4 oder 1/2 Turkish Get Ups auszuführen. Ist man im Bewegungsablauf sicher, sollte man dennoch nicht direkt zum Zusatzgewicht greifen, sondern stattdessen beispielsweise einen Schuh auf der geschlossenen Faust balancieren. Erst, wenn man diesen Zwischenschritt beherrscht, geht man zur Übung mit der Kugel oder anderen Trainingsgeräten (wie Sandbags, Kurzhanteln etc) über. Einige fragen sich jetzt sicherlich, wo bzw. wie sie diese mächtige Übung in ihr Training integrieren können. In der „Lernphase“ ohne Gewicht kann man den TGU wunderbar als sehr effektive Korrektur- und Aktivierungs-Übung in das allgemeine Aufwärm- und Mobilitytraining am Anfang einer Einheit einbinden.. Geübte können den TGU als Ganzkörperübung mit höheren Gewichten in ihr reguläres Training aufnehmen. Today's session was 3mile #warmup, 16x200s in 41s, followed by 3mile #warmdown. . Bloody glad last night's hurricane 🌪🌪 (by Irish standards!) had died down to give me a decent chance at the 200s! . The first 2 were too fast, just under 37s. After those, managed to reel the pace in a little and hit 39s for the remaining 14. Broke them up into sets of 4 in my head. (Cos 16 is a lot of counting!). Attempts at 140lb (85% of my bodyweight. 166lbs) Turkish Get Up. This would be 5lb personal record. But not happening today. The whole time I was talking myself into this attempt couldn’t help but think how fuckin obscene something like this would have been to me 3 or 4 years ago. I considered kettlebells a conditioning tool and the lifts most common to the kettlebell world like get ups, windmills, bent press etc, fun little moves to do with moderate to light weights. Then one day you blow apart your Achilles’ tendon and find all you can safely do in gym is kettlebell swings. And then you dig deep into the dark, dirty KB world. Find guys pushing the boundaries of what you thought could be done with KBs. Without early influences like @rhinostrength @leviarsl @zrawkirch @kettlebellkarl and others, well I’m sure I’d be doing something and testing myself. But I sure wouldn’t be doing this shit.
