Wanted to share a special find I came across today on stavanger drive that I thought a lot of you would appreciate. It’s a refill station for olive oils and balsamic vinegars, where you save $1 (and the environment) by bringing your own container. I tasted a bunch of them then decided to fill my mason jar with the fig balsamic and unfiltered Greek olive oil. Check it out yourself at @simplyforlife_st_johns, apparently they’re also doing a tasting and demo of them on Saturday from 12-5.
I can finally announce a dream project I’ve had the pleasure of working on these past few months with a true idol of mine, Marian Frances White. Marian is one of the ORIGINAL nl vegans (from long before Facebook groups or instagram hashtags existed) and is releasing a new cookbook called “Island Vegan” in June 2019, which will include lots of new recipes along with some updated ones from The Eldamar Cookbook, the first vegan cookbook ever published here in 1995. Not only did I get to take the food photos for this book, I also got to sample the food I photographed and I can guarantee that it’s a book you’re going to want to have in your kitchen, whether you’re vegan or not. I’m not even much of a recipe person myself but this is one book I know I’ll use often, especially to make the veggie paté, my new go-to for potlucks.
Finally got to try out @freshstartfauxmage vegan cheese made in PEI. It’s so good, I ate the whole tub in one go. Next time I’ll try and savour it a bit lon...actually never mind who am I kidding I know I’ll just eat the whole thing again. Can’t wait to see more Canadian vegan cheese companies hit the shelves.

Tonight we got to have a look inside the brand new St. John’s Community Market, where this year’s VegFest is happening on August 26th. It may just look like a regular fast food burger and fries, but that’s the point. This is the 100% vegan “beyond burger” I just got from the Irving Big Stop Restaurant in Mount Pearl. It’s available at all such restaurants in Canada, and will soon be at all A&W locations as well! Just be sure to ask for it without cheese, mayo, and with their vegan bun 🍔🍟
Okay maybe I can no longer call myself a “health vegan” after these last three posts, but I have zero regrets. This is a vegan calzone from @createolio and it is so packed with flavour that my mouth was actually tingling while I was eating it. I got to speak with the new owner too and he told me that they’re working on some exciting new vegan cheeses and fake meat toppings to be announced in the coming months. Definitely worth checking them out if you haven’t already!

First time trying dandelion greens tonight - felt good to eat the weeds! Sautéed them in pesto and balsamic with portobellos and zucchini. Spread some tangy fermented sunflower yogurt on the bread. Big thanks to my friend Marian for the greens, homemade pesto, and vegan yogurt. This is one of the tastiest things I’ve eaten in a while.
We’ve been wanting to visit @njskitchen for sooo long and finally got to try it tonight! Amazing buffet with mostly vegan dishes (which were labelled!) and Jamil was so friendly. He told us their business has doubled since they started promoting their vegan options! The creamy mango lassi and spicy breaded okra were some of our faves.
