While we're on the subject of art, cars, auctions and double the high estimates... I love this picture of Janis Joplin and her hand-painted Porsche 356 (not my photo obviously, all credits to the photographer) and when it went up for auction in 2015 the estimate was $400-600,000 and it sold for $1.76 Million! I happen to have the 12.11.15 AUTOWEEK article up on my Mac after an earlier IG discussion, but what makes this price so insane is that it's a repaint done in the 90s! It had been painted over back to its Dolphin Gray finish by her brother... Madness! #porsche356 #artcar #janisjoplin #rmsothebys #autoweek #handpainted #auctionestimate #celebrityvalue #vintagecolorphoto #rockandrollhistory #carauction #artauction #handpainted356

I know Easter is over, but I just cannot resist sharing this wonderfully vibrant portrait of a young woman wearing an Easter hat, photographed by Nickolas Muray for Whitman Chocolates (1945). Presumably intended to form part of Whitman's Easter advertising campaign that year, this photo is so pretty it would certainly entice me to buy chocolate (not that I need much enticement!). The highly-saturated colours are thanks to a three-color process called Carbro, which is sadly no-longer commonly used due to its time consuming nature. I think that’s a real shame as the results are gorgeous! PS. If anyone has seen this photo in use in a Whitman Chocolates advert, I would love to see it, so please do let me know! . #nickolasmuray #whitmanchocolates #carbroprocess #easterhat #easterbonnet #vintagecolorphoto #vintagecolourphoto #vintagephoto #1940s #portrait #carbro www.velvetlimelight.com

An artist sketches a model, photographed by William P. Gottlieb at a residence on 52nd Street, New York City, c. 1948. I love the intense colours of Kodachrome photos, they just have that 'vintage look' - that certain je ne sais quoi which modern colour photography lacks. Today's #tbt is very special to me because it's the #catholicchurch my mother grew up in! A photo from the #archives of the #daughtersofcharity shows a #nun walking outside #stannsschool in #bridgeport #connecticut in the early #1960s (because she's wearing the old habit). My family was very close to the #sisters who taught there, and my grandfather was a #fireman at the #firehouse right across the street on #brewsterstreet so he was there all the time. I have many happy memories of the sisters and that church! ⛪️😇#dioceseofbridgeport #bridgeportct #vintagecatholicphoto #vintagenunphoto #prevaticanii #oldhabit #throwbackthursday #catholicschool #catholicschools #vintagecolorphoto #bridgeportconnecticut #bridgeporthistory #bridgeporthistoricalsociety #teachingnun #teachingnuns #daughterofcharity

My pretty Grandmother. My Grandfather who I never had the chance to meet was a photographer in his spare time. He did all of his own processing, both Color and black and white in the 40's and 50's. #tbt
