Thank you to all the brave women who spoke when others were scared, scarred, shaking, or silent. You have the right to be, react and speak about an act of sexual assault how, when and however you deem necessary. Don’t let anyone stop your chance at healing you’re worth everything. Some of the things my bi friends have to listen to *constantly*: “It’s a stepping stone to being gay” “Your sexuality doesn’t exist” “You’re greedy” “So you fancy everyone” “Yeah but what do you prefer” “You have to decide” “I was interested in you until I realised you were bi” “So do you actually fancy me?” “I couldn’t ever give you what you want” Some of the things I’ve had to listen to dating bi women: “How can you trust her? They’re more prone to cheating” “She might just be experimenting, don’t get your hopes up” “It’s a stepping stone, don’t worry” “Yeah but can you actually give her what she wants?” “I guess it’s ok if she prefers women” “Oh she’s with you for so long, she’s definitely gay” “Do you feel like you have to be more masculine?” “I could never date a bisexual” And my favourite: “Bisexual women I can kind of understand but bi men? Definitely don’t exist.” Quit 👏🏻 with 👏🏻 the 👏🏻 bierasure 👏🏻 Seriously, I am so sick and tired of people trying to erase bisexuality from others’ lives. Try and find a morsel of empathy, stop asking are they suddenly straight/gay based on who they’re dating and start believing their sexuality. If you tell people you are straight because you fancy men/women, that’s accepted no question asked. Don’t challenge someone’s identity and feelings because it’s not something you’ve experienced. Start accepting love and hormones that make us fancy whoever and whatever other psychological or social influences is not a feckin’ provocation or a problem. It’s a beautiful thing, and should be not only accepted and recognised, but celebrated. Happy #bivisibilityday 💗💜 #bi #bisexual #lgbt #bivisibility #visibilitymatters #repost: @iglyo #support #understanding #love

Why does my sexuality matter as a scientist? Shouldn't it not? My bacteria don't care who I date. My plants aren't upset by who I snuggle while watching Netflix. But, being unbalanced in life can cause my research to suffer. And having to hide our true selves because we are "different" from what people expect can create a dangerous rift in our sense of self. When a male scientist says he is bringing a plus-one to the lab barbecue, the question shouldn't be "what's HER name?" Hopefully we are getting closer to the day that we don't assume gender based on a picture on a website. One day, a woman brings her wife to a conference, there will be no discussion of whether they should be identified as a spouse or a friend. Some day, maybe we will all include preferred pronouns and ask for others' as well. Visibility matters because our society still holds so tightly to heteronormativity - ie, the assumption that someone is cisgender and is attracted to people of the opposite gender, and that this is "normal". This forces anyone other than this demographic to "out" themselves to correct the misconception. Recent studies show that people of the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to leave STEM career tracks, and women are especially likely to leave #stem fields. To change these statistics, we need to be vocal and visibility. It is not "us versus them" it should just be "us" Go check out @500queerscientists for more! And @aqueerscientist and @leeconstababble and @gserratomarks and @socalledexpert and @molecularmaven and so many more inspire me every day! Self-care also means learning your boundaries and respecting them. It’s okay to say “no” now if it means you will be in a better place to say “yes” later. 💕 Before take-off, flight attendants always instruct the passengers to put on your own oxygen mask first before helping others ✈️. Learning to know what recharges you, helps you feel safe, and enables you to be in a better state is an important skill. Your well-being is crucial to help yourself and others around you. 🙅🏻‍♀️ Whether this means saying “no” to taking your coworkers extra shift this time, or saying “no” to that extra project, or saying “no” to that unhealthy habit you know will leave you feeling crappier than before. Saying “no” can be good and is a form of self-care. 💭 What are you saying “no” to today and saying “yes” to instead?

#repost @n0pales with @get_repost ・・・ Embrace your nopal en la frente. For a really long time I didn't like that I was Mexican American. I had self hate about my culture and felt so much shame for who I was and how I grew up. I didn't like speaking Spanish and I hated my skin turning beautiful shades of brown as it would be kissed by the sun. Growing up being a little brown girl in a Swedish town I always wanted to be like my friends with long blonde hair, blue eyes ,super tall and thin. Getting bullied for my skin color being brown and my hair being curly. I've grown and learned to love who I am, thankfully I can say I love everything about myself and my culture.I am proud to be the daughter of an Immigrant retired migrant worker. I am proud to have curly locks that are as wild and beautiful as they should be & loving my brown skin. I'm proud to speak Spanish and talk to my father and not be lost in translation &I I get to talk shit on all these gringos that hate me and my culture which is a plus. Don't ever be ashamed of who you are and where you came from. Thank you @nopallady for making my corona💚 and thank you to my madrecita bringing this back from her trip

Janelle Monáe has a line in her song “Yoga” that says “crown on my head, but the world on my shoulder” and that is a beautiful articulation of my experiences in graduate school. Her juxtaposition of grandeur and immense pressure is how I have felt throughout my educational journey. As a first generation college student, I really had nowhere to turn when I needed advice. Campus resources attempted to use a one size fits all approach and my family just wanted me to succeed. Looking back, I think my family felt bad that I had to work so hard to support myself while navigating college, but they were proud of the strides I was taking. I never thought graduate school was a viable option for me and, when I started, I had no idea what my journey would entail. Higher education is nothing to scoff at, but when you are Black, working class, and a woman, it becomes even more daunting. At 25, I had three degrees and now I’m a Ph.D candidate. Throughout my process, I supported myself with assistantships and working. Usually, experiences like mine are glorified while casting a shadow over how grueling it is. We have to stop that. I don’t have it all figured out, and I still struggle, but I’m learning to cut myself some slack.

Bisexuality Visibility Week (Sept 23-26)✨ exploring my own sexuality is/was such a journey. So many years spent tangled up in internalized biphobia, homophobia, shaming messages, silencing and fear. One of the main reasons I teach sex ed is because there are so many things I wish I could say to my teenage self. I often find myself mentally chatting with teen Rachel, in all her eyeliner and crop top glory. (Especially these days, when my life is going through another big transition.) I remember her fear of being gay, I remember her sad, inside-out feeling of relief each time she confirmed her sexual attraction to cis men. I remember the uncomfortable growth as she explored what sex and communication really meant to her... the transition from what she thought she was supposed to do into what she actually wanted.. I wish I could tell her it’s okay, beautiful even, to love people across the gender spectrum... to kiss and touch and fuck and consensually explore based off her own script. I want my bisexual, queer teenage self to know that this part of her, the part she was so scared of, is actually her deepest root of strength and joy.✨ - - image repost @xicanisma_

I haven't sat at my desk in our analysis room in months, but I've been in need of a change in scenery lately so here I am. I get stuck a lot. I'm generally a pretty content and happy person, but when I hear stories of bad things happening to animals or scary things happening to people, my mind can get stuck on thoughts of what they might have been thinking or feeling at that time. It's general empathy but 10-fold stronger, overtaking my entire mind and sometimes leading to panic. I couldn't tell you why, though. It's pretty new. But then those thoughts stay in my mind for a while, and if I'm not diligent, they can get in the way of my ability to focus and do my work. So to get unstuck, I try new environments where those thoughts haven't taken over yet. And if it's really bad, to the point where I can't make myself think of something else or be active to get it out of my mind, I do sudoku puzzles. They're completely neutral, so there's no stress attached like with my work, and I can stay cuddled up somewhere and not have to move. BUT they're incompatible to thinking those stuck thoughts. I have to focus on the numbers if I want to solve the puzzle, and usually within 15 minutes, my mind is back at ease. I don't know why I get stuck on things like that, but I'm building a toolbox to help me get out of those mindsets. I've always been empathetic, especially when it comes to animals (particularly doggos 🐕), but never to the point where I'm physically upset and panicked. It's an interesting hurdle because I don't want to become insensitive to people's emotions and experiences, but I can't be ruled by them either. Anyone ever experience something similar, and if so, how do you get unstuck? ------------------------------------------------ #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #stuck #unstuck #copingmechanisms #phdstudent #phdlife #gradstudent #gradlife #anxiety #depression #visibilitymatters
