Staying positive doesn’t mean you’re obvious to the negative or not processing it, it’s just choosing to focus on all the positive you can in order to enjoy each day the very best you can. I’ve spent in the past way to many days, weeks even months being low, sad, crying. I feel I wasted so much precious time. I’m simply not prepared to do that again. Especially now my days are filled with so much love and so much laughter from the beautiful family we have created and so truly blessed with. I still feel pain I still have low moments but whilst I’m sat with and acknowledging those emotions I’m choosing to find a positive for each thought that’s making me sad. It’s incredibly hard to do this when you know it would be totally acceptable to fall apart. Yet for me personally that is a waste of my energy. I’d rather put that energy into my strength and courage and keep on smiling, keep on shining! I sometimes sit and wonder where I get the strength from when it would be so so easy to fall apart! I guess that’s what’s got me through all these years. The most asked question when I tell people I’m going travelling is “what about your job?” Right next to “so you’re just going to go right back to the beginning?”. Work is not everything, my job is not the only job I will ever have and you can NEVER go back to the beginning, it’s just not possible. I don’t see it as starting again, I see it as a new chapter, a chance to live a slightly different life to the one I’m living now. I am one of those people that have 70000 interests and hobbies and things I want to learn more about, I always have one hand on a whole new hobby at all time, but my next areas of focus are blogging and photography. BALANCED THINKING Flexible and balanced thinking is the opposite to absolute & rigid thinking (black & white thinking). Balanced thinking is reasoned, considered, rational and open to correction. There is a strong link between rigidity of thought and mental illness, particularly in depression and OCD. Such thinking also plays a role in occupational and relationship problems, as inflexibility and being uncompromising can cause conflict and disatisfaction. Further, this style of thinking is often associated with righteousness, being judgmental, stereotyping, poor collaboration and low cooperation. It’s day 2 of Hunt for Happiness Week and we all know we won’t be happy all of the time - even if we want and try to be. Life happens, and it’s not a ‘happiness only’ experience. Of course, that also means that we aren’t wired to be happy all of the time. Oftentimes, we have ‘happiness zappers’ like unhappiness, stress, chaos, annoyances, competitive happiness, and technology inundation happen to us sometime during the day, and since our brain is hardwired to focus more on these experiences than happy ones, we have to decide how we manage our happiness zappers before they start managing us and practice practical happiness - allowing us to embrace all of life’s emotions - including the unhappy ones. Let's talk "minimalism" here. This is beyond simply having a clean countertop, or wearing all white (seriously, does every minimalist picture have to be white?) . . This is about clearing the clutter from your home, yes...but also your head and your heart. And that can be much, much more complicated. So often we approach minimalism by clearing out a junk drawer. And yes, this is a great first step. It's oftentimes the easiest place to start. . . Yet if you don't address what you carry in your head - the stress, overwhelm, obligation and to-dos... . . If you don't address what you carry in your heart - the resentment, the grief, the self-consciousness... . . Then are there really any weights being listed, or simply a bigger space to hold on to the emotional baggage in your home? . . This morning on a client call with one of the utter babes I work with (you know who you are!) we were talking about the journey she’s been through in the 12 weeks we had spent working together. This lady has TRANSFORMED! It’s been so beautiful to witness, to be her coach, to be holding space and standing beside her on her journey. We spoke about how she has discovered things in herself that she didn’t know where there before...resilience, self trust, inner confidence, responsibility, belief. And through those discoveries her outer world has completely changed. Let’s just focus on that for a second. We didn’t create something NEW. We didn’t say “okay we need to create this new thing called belief/confidence/trust/etc and attach that TO YOU”.... No, no,no. Instead we went on a journey that enabled her to FIND all of these parts because they were always, already, WITHIN her. Sometimes we get lost. Sometimes we forget what we are capable of. Put quiet time on your schedule Make ‘me time’ a priority for part of each day. Alone time gives you a chance to meditate, do absolutely nothing, or just relax and regroup. It doesn’t have to be for long. Start with 10 minutes a day. I try to get 10 minutes of meditation into my day before I go to bed. Do you manage to get time to yourself? What I am thankful for - GROCERY delivery services! Yeah, I was skeptical - I am a foodie and love touching and smelling things before I buy. But after hearing from Savory Living program participants that they had trouble fitting grocery shopping in - and my husband pushing me to figure out a way to get some tasks off my list (so I would be less stressed over the weekend), I decided to bite the bullet and try it out. Let's face it - if you want to eat more real, whole food, you need an easy way to get it into your kitchen and fridge. And if you are short on time or energy - outsource baby and make it happen! I use Amazon Fresh. It's AHHHHHmazing. I save about 2 hours a week. That means I can spend more time assembling and cooking delicious foods (instead of shopping for it). Yeah, I was afraid of what the produce would be like and if the person shopping would pick good stuff. I've been using it for 2 months now and 95% of the food that comes has been great - and if it isn't you just let them know and they send you a replacement and credit your account! Ha! How do you communicate what you want? All too often we say we want to achieve or try something but stop ourselves. This can be because we don’t communicate how we are feeling. We don’t say that we are scared, that we don’t know how to start, what to say or how to ask. From my experience in education, one of the reasons can be that in your past you have been mocked or told that you asked a ‘stupid’ question. It can also be because you don’t want to stand out or say the wrong thing. Maybe your confidence is lacking and that missing piece of self belief holds you back. Does this resonate? I know it’s been me and now it’s one of the things I ALWAYS encourage people to do-ask me questions!! I recently found out about this awesome book “Getting to hell yes” by @deliciousalex and Bob Gower It explains a way of communicating without you feeling like you are having to fix your challenges but are able to get out all your worries and concerns before starting on them. It goes like this Intention- what is your intention for the discussion you are about to have? Eg deciding on your next family holiday Concerns- what are the concerns about going on the holiday? Boundaries- what are the boundaries you want to put on it? Eg do you want to only fly within 3hrs of home? Dream- how is it going to feel, what will you enjoy most about it. This can be used in so many situations and what I love about it is that it is a great framework for you to be able to speak your truth in a non confrontational way while still getting out what are usually the hardest things to say Remember...if you don’t say what you mean, mean what you say or communicate what you need no one is going to know how they can best help or support you. Mindful Mondays __ Lots of people have told us that they have heard a lot about mindfulness and would love to try to start engaging in mindful practices. The only thing that holds them back is that they are too busy to dedicate ten, five, or even three minutes out of their current lifestyles, to do this. Our answer is simple, incorporate mindfulness into any dead space you have throughout your day! __ Utilising mindfulness alongside mundane everyday tasks such as making your bed, showering, or even eating can be the perfect introduction to mindfulness and a great way to begin to engage with it in your current lifestyle. Here is our suggestions for mindful eating! 1) Before taking a bite of your meal, take a moment to really notice what it looks like and describe this to yourself. What is the shape of it, is it completely that shape or is it a bit bumpy in places, is it smooth or rough, large or small, what is the colour of it, is it hot or cool? 2) Pay attention to what your other senses are picking up from your food also, what does it smell like, does it make any sounds, how heavy is it? 3) As you eat it notice the texture of the food and any changes that occur from eating it, is it chewy or crunchy, has it changed in size, what does it feel like on your tongue and in your mouth? As you are doing this, you may notice some thoughts coming into your mind or you may not. If they do come, let them be. As we have said before, if you don’t focus too much on them, they will stay for a while and then leave on their own. 4) If you notice yourself getting distracted and your mind wandering, this is a positive thing, it shows you are becoming aware of your mind, just gently return to gazing softly at the object you initially chose. 5) Try to pace your eating. Portion each mouthful between a couple of breaths and so on. Try to notice your breathing whilst you are doing this task, can you notice when you first start to breathe in and can you follow this in-breath all the way to the first moment of your out-breath and vice versa? 6) Once you have finished eating, take a moment to engage in three more breaths. Its usually accepted that really deep belly breaths are useful.

My happy place. Anywhere involving scones, eclairs, a nice cup of tea and some fancy decor. . All this talk of blue Monday is downright depressing. Surely every day in January and February (and most of March) is a bit of a struggle when it’s grey and drizzly outside??? . But what about the days when it’s bright blue skies, icy cold air and crispy leaves to crunch? This morning the sky was pinky red and a beauty to see. Notice the little things. . So I take your Blue Monday and show you a chocolate eclair, an earl grey tea, some gilded chairs and a fancy bathroom and 17 other reasons to smile. I’m sure if you think hard enough you can think of a few? . I spent some of today talking about stress at a greenkeepers association event - 150 men (and 2 women) sharing why their job is stressful. Who knew. . One of the techniques we talked about using in times of stress is positive anchoring - thinking of a moment in time you felt pure happiness, joy, an ear to ear smile. Think of all the details, the smell of that chocolately goodness, the taste of that light cream and puffy pastry and gooey chocolate, sorry getting carried away here. . If you close your eyes can you think of a time you felt truly happy and can you hold onto it for the days (like Blue Monday!) you feel low? . Where’s your happy place? . STRESS DAMAGES MENTAL HEALTH Recent studies show that stress, no matter its cause, alters brain circuitry in ways that can have long-term effects on mental health. Research by Chaudhury indicates that traumatic events appear to cause depression by derailing the brain’s so-called reward system, which normally causes pleasurable feelings whenever we engage in fun activities like spending time with friends. People who have suffered major stress, such as soldiers returning from combat, often report that they no longer find pleasure in these things. UNCONDITIONAL SELF ACCEPTANCE - "Self-acceptance is my refusal to be in an adversarial relationship with myself.” ~Nathaniel Branden Self-acceptance involves embracing a ALL facets of ourselves-- the many truths. As such, self-acceptance is unconditional, free of any qualification. It includes an authentic acceptance of your attributes, skills, weaknesses, limitations, and foibles. Accepting youself unconditionally evolves from affirming, supportive and emotion coaching parenting oriented towards unconditional positive regard. If your childhood was not nurturing in these ways, it is important to learn to "certify" yourself, to validate your good enoughness. One way to explore if you are conditionally or unconditionally accepting of yourself is to look at your expectations and attitudes. Do you only cheer yourself on when you feel positive and/or accomplish external goals? Are you “allowed” to have an off day or an unproductive week without lapsing into self-judgment and self-loathing? Do you stand up for yourself when others discourage you? Do you give yourself the benefit of the doubt in difficult or confusing times? Do you acknowledge your effort, determination, perserverance, empathy? Answering these questions will reveal if you accept yourself only conditionally. Conditional acceptance means you only love yourself when you’re performing well. Psychological counselling can be helpful if you struggle with self acceptance. BODY IMAGE ISSUES I came across this underwear ad from 1965 focusing on offering a solution to all the unfortunate women with a pear-shaped body - apparently their body is “no shape for a girl.” With unhealthy media depictions of girls and women, it is no wonder that some women from a young age struggle with body image issues. Body Dysmorphic disorder is characterised by an preoccupation with one or more perceived defects or flaws in appearance that are not observable or appear slight to others (DSM V). It is considered to be a form of obsessive compulsive disorder. BDD can be differentiated from the distorted body image which is a defining feature of eating disorders, in that distorted body image involves a preoccupation with overall body mass, whereas BDD involves focusing on a specific part or feature. The typical age of onset of BDD is ages 12-13, with an average onset of 16-17. Some symptoms include: Excessive self-consciousness Experience persistent and intrusive thoughts about the imagined flaw  Feeling defined by their flaw. Are fearful of being seen as flawed Frequent checking of appearance Attempting to camouflage or alter the perceived defect Avoidance of public or social situations or triggers that increase distress. They may at times be housebound Needless cosmetic and dermatological treatments. Depression Isolation BDD is chronic, but responds favorably to treatment with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy found to be an effective and evidence based method of treatment.
