Erebus class monitor HMS Terror (I03), seen here in 1933. Launched May 1916, commissioned August 1916, sunk February 1941. Armed with 2 x 15" BL Mk1 guns in a single twin turret mounted on a high barbette to increase range, the monitor's primary role was gunfire support; a shallow draft permitted her to get in close to shore, providing heavy fire up to a theoretical distance of 40,000 yards. Terror was fitted with anti-torpedo bulges, which proved quite effective when she was hit by three 17.7" tin fish in an encounter with German torpedo boats near Dunkirk in October 1917. She was initially beached, before being towed back to Blighty for repairs. She spent a large part of WW1 off the Belgian coast providing fire for inland operations. She took part in the bombardment of the lock gates at Zeebrugge in April 1918, and gunfire support during the 4th Battle of Ypres in September that year. Between the wars Terror took part in gunnery trials, testing new 15" shells, and was attached to the Royal Navy's gunnery school HMS Excellent. In October 1933 she was sent to Singapore to act as a floating battery until fortification work was completed. Not being designed for long journeys or built for speed (12 knots flat out), Terror arrived in January 1934. At the outbreak of WW2 she was still in Singapore. She received orders to sail for the UK in November 1939 but didn't leave Singapore until the end of January 1940. By the time she had reached Suez in March her orders had been changed and she was instructed to join the hard-pressed Mediterranean Fleet. She helped provide AA cover for Malta and conducted shore bombardments off the Libyan coast. February 1941 found Terror at the recently captured port of Benghazi. The area was receiving constant attention from the Italians and the Luftwaffe who were bombing and dropping magnetic mines in the harbour. It was felt that Terror was too much of a sitting target so the decision was made to sail her to Tobruk. Leaving Benghazi harbour she triggered two magnetic mines nearby, causing serious damage. Never a fast ship, she made a tempting target for Axis bombers. (Continued below).

After a fantastic European ‘Dutch’ party on Saturday evening with Eurovision Songfestival, a view of another Europe in 1914-1918. World war 1 in Ypres in Belgium. I try to figure out where exactly in this picture we had our coffee today. I cannot tell, as this is completely rebuild. But somewhere maybe behind the tower. After seeing hundreds of photos, reading all the stories, walking in the deserted trenches, I think probably no one ever by then could imagine that 100 years laters we walk in Ypres again. Drinking coffee, walk over de Market and seeing this picture.

Angel Put sad wings around me now Protect me from this world of sin So that we can rise again Oh angel We can find our way somehow Escaping from the world we're in To a place where we began And I know we'll find A better place and piece of mind Just tell me that it's all you want For you and me Angel won't you set me free Angel Remember how we chased the sun Then reaching for the stars at night As our lives had just begun When I close my eyes I hear your velvet wings and cry I'm waiting here with open arms Oh can't you see Angel shine your light on me Angel we'll meet once more I'll pray When all my sins are washed away Hold me inside your wings and stay Angel take me far away Put your sad wings around me now Angel take me far away Put sad wings around me now So that we can rise again Put sad wings around me now Angel take me far away Put sad wings around me now So that we can rise again ____ MUSIC: Angel. Not sure if anyone here collects medical related stuff, but as a future PA and having a general interest in this area of history, When i saw this it just intrigued me. This a Pre-WWI surgeons kit, and it is in practically unused condition, with the Red Cross on top very clear with no blemishes. While it may have been issued for WWI use, the brass plate indicates pre WWI made as brass was needed for ammunition. The front plate appears to be a light metal material. The tabs are strong and supple. The inside looks almost brand new, and in lieu of not having actual surgical instruments, modeled some of my own equipment in its place for the effect. I’ve been told these are very rare and hard to come by especially in the condition this one is in. In regards to tending to the wounded, there were 3 stages of caring for the wounded. Locating and removing them as quickly as humanly possible- removing them back away from front lines to collection point & triage, and Seperating the most severe to transport to surgical field hospital. If the soldier was well enough enough to travel, they’d go to a stationary hospital. #military#militaryhistory#historyporn#medalman89#medic#army#navy#marines#airforce#soldier#sailor#corpsman#marine#wwii#worldwar2#wwi#worldwar1#thegreatwar#doctor#physicianassistant#antique#hobby#passion#nurse#caduceus#redcross#vintage#old#physicianassistantstudent

This is my British P-1907 bayonet! I live the look of early bayonets and how they are practically swords. I have heard that British Calvary in the First World War did use this! Not sure how accurate that is, but it sure paints a picture. Last picture I have on here is this attached to my 1916 Lee Enfield.💥🇬🇧

The first three photos in this group of seven show Canadian trench lines in the immediate area of Lens in the Nord-pas-de-Calais region of France, most of which were taken on the morning of July 28, 1917, at about 10:15. The main trench line running through the center of these pictures is a network nicknamed “Nun’s Alley”. The original photographs were labeled (i.e. finished/unfinished trenches, machine gun pits, entry points, etc.), although these labels may be difficult to read, so I recommend zooming in on each photo and rotating your phone accordingly. Going forward, use these labels (“Nun’s Alley” in particular) as a reference point in the other photos. Most of them were taken above the exact same areas (for example the third and last slides), although some were not. Some context now, the town of Lens was the site of a nasty little battle which only lasted ten days between August 15th and 25, 1917. It came at a time when the Third Battle of Ypres (aka Passchendaele) had just begun only a few weeks earlier, and in an effort to divert German frontline troops and reinforcements away from the Ypres Salient, the Canadians launched an attack at Lens, a town otherwise militarily insignificant. It was an attrition battle focused strictly on killing as much of the enemy as possible, and relied heavily on the incorporation of combined small-arms and artillery fire as well as gas (Yellow Cross - aka Mustard Gas - to be precise). The Canadians suffered nearly 8,700 killed and wounded there, while the Germans suffered approximately 10,000 casualties. Back to the photos, the second half of these pictures (slides four through eight) show the same Canadian trenches in the Lens area in early-to-mid August (dates range from August 5th to August 16th, which I’ve arranged in chronological order) at about the time the battle unfolded, and show the amount of destruction inflicted on an already devastated area. Take notice of the thousands of white specks on the ground, each an impact crater from an artillery shell; some are located as close to a trench as the very edge.

The Battle of the Lys. Gunners of the Royal Field Artillery getting an 18 pounder gun into action alongside a ruined cottage. Near Saint-Floris, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. 2 May 1918. 18-pounders were used effectively in the spring of 1918 against attacking German troops during their Spring Offensive. However, the effectiveness of the German fire plan on 21st March caused many casualties amongst the gunners, and in too many case batteries were unable to withdraw before being overrun. Nevertheless on the 4th of April the Germans made their final attempt to break the British line having advanced to the area of Villers Bretonneux held by the 14th and 18th Divisions, reinforced by the 16th and 39th divisional artilleries although batteries were understrength through losses. By mid-morning observers were engaging massed German infantry but these pressed forward and reached just east of Hamel. Brigadier-General Edward Harding-Newman, CRA of the 14th Division issued the following order "This attack must and can be stopped by artillery fire. If any battery can no longer effectively stop the enemy from its present position, it will at once move forward to a position on the crest, to engage the enemy over open sights. It is essential that the artillery hold the line and they will do so." Fire from several RFA brigades mostly with 18-pounder batteries stopped the German advance, including some from the 16th Division that deployed forward to the crest and observers from 177 Brigade RFA using Hamel church tower. This action effectively ended the German advance. A German soldier staring at the Camera. Judging by the uniform and the equipment this is definitely late war, I would say 1917/18. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If we look carefully this soldier has been highly decorated. He has been awarded the Iron Cross 1st class and the Prussian Pour Le Merite medal which was the highest ever medal to be awarded for the German Armed Forces during World War One. . The helmet is an M17 and if you look carefully he has a M16 gas mask with Feldstecher (binoculars) on his chest. He also appears to be wearing a officers belt buckle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Now, he is definitely a officer due to the collar. However, he could be an Artillery observer who coordinates artillery for tanks specifically for hitting enemy tanks. He may be even a messanger. However, I don't think he is a stormtrooper because he is quite old. He has been most likely posted to the Western Front. . In some ways his uniform looks Austrian, but due to his medals he is most definitely German.🇩🇪 . #thehistoryclub #historians #history #ww1 #ww2 #worldwar1 #worldwartwo #war #warishell #greatwar #germanarmy #ww1history #kaiserreich #ironcross #wwii #20thcentury #trenches #1918 #britishhistory #historiansunion #americanhistory #germanarmy #austriahungary #militaria #military #soldier #soldat #battle #warstories

Over the top men Here you can see British troops charging at the enemy trench and climbing over barbed wire this tactic of attack was almost useless but the allies kept using it basically when a trench decided to attack another trench they would go over the top of their trench and try to go to the other trench to overrun it and claim it as their own this was a bad tactic and wasted a lot of men as they would send wave after wave of men until they captured the trench or just gave up ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ #ww1 #wwi #worldwar1 #worldwari #worldwarone #firstworldwar #thegreatworldwar #thefirstworldwar1914 #thegreatwar #trench #barbedwire #british #germanempire #history

What do these disks on old rifle stocks do? They indicate which units they were issued to! This disk on my Lee Enfield indicates it was issued to the 9th Royal Highlander regiment in March of 1918. The second picture is the 9th Royal Highlanders in France in April of 1918. Although these disks show the history of the rifle, they lost practicality, as captured rifles indicated how an army was moving its regiments in battle. The markings have lines through them because it was likely issued to another regiment after the war, as it is also an Australian marked rifle. #smle #leeenfield #enfield #rifle #militaryrifle #militarysurplus #milsurp #militarysurplusrifle #wwi #wwii #ww1 #ww2 #worldwarone #worldwartwo #worldwar1 #worldwar2 #history #303british #britain #britishrifle #smle #historicfirearms #oldrifle #oldsteelhistoricalfirearms

Second Battle of the Somme: As the German spring offensive was gaining ground at the early parts of 1918, it slowly but surely began to collapse, as Ludendorff’s plan is coming to an end. The allies were able to strike back hard as their counterattacks in August of 1918 destroyed the German army. The battle of Amiens was coming to a close and the German army was falling apart, however British Field Marshal Douglas Haig decided to stop the Amiens Offensive. The Amiens offensive is considered the last fighting chance the Germans had and according to Ludendorff the Battle of Amiens was “the black day of the German army”. Even though the German army was basically gone, it did not stop the allies from pushing into the German defense. On the 21st of August 1918, Sir Douglas Haig would launch the British Third Army and with the help of the U.S II corps, would begin to attack at Albert, starting the Second Battle of the Somme. The push at Albert was a huge success for the allies as it forced the German second army to be pushed even further back. This didn’t stop the British from attacking and in the mean time the Australian Second division, led by General John Monash had pushed through the Somme river and began to attack the Germans at St Quieten, which they had retreated to after the push at Albert. The battle at Saint Quieten would only last three days and the Germans were forced to retreat eastward of the Hindenburg line. This caused an opening to the main German supply line and the whole idea of the Second Battle of the Somme was cut supplies from the Germans. In the mean time Canadian 1st division, 4th division, and with the help of the British 52nd division, captured the Drocourt-Quéant, causing the Germans to retreat westward of the Hindenburg line. The Allies have decimated the Germans and the Germans had to completely retreat all the way back to where they had started the Spring Offensive. The allies have the Germans completely surrounded as they now had the west side of the Hindenburg line and the East side of the Hindenburg line, however the war is not yet done as they still need to break through those lines.
