Yoga is for EVERYONE 🙏 #repost @lifeforceyogaom ・・・ A small study involving 21 male veterans, with an average age of 61, found that participants experienced a significant decrease in depression symptoms after a twice weekly hatha yoga 8-week program. This study was even presented at the 125th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association. What I find most interesting about this study, is what’s being categorized as the “most significant study finding.” ⠀ ⠀ "From my view, our most meaningful finding was how much these men—almost all of whom were practicing yoga for the first time—enjoyed the practice, believed it had improved their physical and/or mental health, and viewed it as a promising treatment option, suggesting that yoga could be a highly acceptable complementary approach for male veterans. I think this is important given that people in the U.S. often think of yoga as a woman’s activity ... and, more specifically, a privileged young white woman’s activity. I was absolutely terrified to post it because of what people would think. “Is it too raunchy,” I asked myself. And then I realized my inner dialogue used the word raunchy to describe my own body. I unknowingly participated in the societal conditioning to treat women’s bodies as an over sexualized physicality even though this is what skin I was born in. This ideology we’ve grown up to experience is definitely NOT true. Just because I am female and I wear what I want does not mean I am over sexualizing anything. This is how I AM comfortable. Comfort and confidence can look many different ways and shapes for women. All equally stunning. I will proudly empower other women that bravely celebrate their unique beauty in any way that represents their own self love. I love you goddess sisters! Rise, babes, Rise! Welcome to the second part of our Asteya post. ⠀ ⠀ *Joy & peace⠀ In coveting others’ possessions, abilities or spiritual gifts we are stealing our own joy. We walk around with a feeling of lacking or not good enough.⠀ ⠀ Investing energy and focus on things we don’t truly need steals our happiness of the moment because we are distracted in worrying about the future.⠀ ⠀ Focusing on the past or the future steals our joy and peace because it causes us to feel unsatisfied in the present moment; we lose sight of the blessings we have.⠀ ⠀ Cultivating gratitude our many blessings grounds us to our current reality in a joyous manner. Learning to feel appreciation when others obtain something (a new car, a promotion, even if they got to sleep-in later than you lol), will assist us in not falling victim to greed and desire of that which doesn’t belong to us; instead, our being will learn to feel happiness for the other person. ⠀ ⠀ Lack of discipline is one of the biggest thieves of our joy and peace. It takes discipline to have a regular self-care practice and it is our regular practice that assists us to keep our alignment within our entire being. ⠀ ⠀ Cultivating gratitude and love for our own happiness, wholeness and peace will develop a sense of responsibility to continue to give that gift to ourselves. When you feel happy, joyous, in love with life, I encourage you to become as mindful as possible; ingrain every aspect of it into your being. The lightness you feel, the smile that easily flows across your lips, the love that comes through easily and remember that this is your birthright. If you’ve been following my stories then you’ve seen some of these pictures and know that I just spent two days in workshops with @kinoyoga. . This was in all honesty the best yoga experience I’ve ever had. To be fair, I’ve only been practicing for 2 1/2 years and am a home practitioner, so it’s normally me and my computer. But my lack of overall experience in no way diminishes how amazing this was. . Kino is so intelligent, so kind, and so talented. She’s also extremely funny, insightful, and an amazing teacher. All of this is wrapped up in a tiny little package. . I’m still processing all that I learned from her, specifically around handstands and backbends. Once I’ve had a chance to process (and my body has recovered) I’m going to try to put together some posts to share what I learned. My sister is a nurse who has traveled to Haiti for several years providing free healthcare. When I first read @vibratehigherofficial's mission - offering a solar light in Haiti for each item purchased - I knew I wanted to be a part of their team. Yesterday was #worldmentalhealthday, and like a good girl with ADHD, I got too distracted to remember to post on it. Everyone's experience is different, but as someone who ugly battles with both depression and with ADHD, I can say that the struggle is real and it sucks. I thought about posting to the studio's page about mental health and the benefits of movement etc, but it felt like a sham. I know how it feels. Mental health struggles are at times a literal battle between life and death, and I'm not going to try to advertise or promote my business on that. Here's what I will say - get professional medical help, get a tribe of good humans around you, and find a thing that makes you sparkle. Yoga (and more specifically handstands) was my thing, but if you suffer from mental health it will ALWAYS require more than just movement and a membership at a gym or studio. Always! If you do have depression and you want to try yoga as a tool - reach out to me and I'll give you private sessions for free and help in any way I can. For most people with Type A personality, the struggle with perfectionism is real! It is amazing how much constriction and unnecessary stress we can create for ourselves when that mindset is the driving the train. According to the author, Benjamin Fishel, these are some characteristics of perfectionists: *You often feel weight down by fear of your goals not succeeding *You’re constantly looking for the ‘right’ moment to do something *You have a persistent sense of dissatisfaction with what you’ve achieved *You obsess over small mistakes that have little impact on the big picture *You neglect self-care in favor of achievements In the article, Benjamin also shares the 5 psychological strategies to work with his perfectionism: 1 – Rethink what it means to be average – we are all average at something; just like we are all incredible at something else 2 - Challenge the all-or-nothing fallacy – life is not black and white my friends 3 – Become friends with what you don’t know – perfectionists have a great desire for control and fear of things not going the way they expect 4 – Become friends with what you don’t love – most people have aspects of themselves that they don’t love, that is ok; give yourself some relief by learning to be friends with those parts of you 5 – Reassess how you measure success – you have inherent value just as you are dear one; it is your birthright Maybe it’s my recovering perfectionist saying this, but I feel that most people probably have some experience with these self-constricting mindsets.
