Patatas Bravas...oh how I love thee. I first had these when living in Madrid when I was 20. It was love at first taste. A tiny bit spicy, perfectly roasted potatoes are magic. I get excited every time I visit Spain so I can have them again...but today I had it @madrizspanish in downtown Auckland and BOOM!! Nailed it! Washed down with a glass (or 2) of #rosé. Can’t wait to go back.

Weekends...love ‘em! So much to love here. The @marquesdemurrieta 2007 Castillo Ygay #rioja was freaking crazy good. Not sure it’s at its peak as it has the structure to keep going but no one is going to hate on you for popping one now if you’ve got it (invite me over though m’kay?). The @bouchardpereetfils Beaune 1er Cru was a stunning example of white #burgundy goodness. Oak with finesse, just ripe fruit, loads of layers. We wished we had another one as we all hated to see this end. In that same note is the Talmard Mâcon. This one #wine is all they make. It punches so far above it’s class it’s crazy. More ripe than the #beaune bit still well restrained, I think this is going to be even better in a few months. The bonus is this is inexpensive enough to be a regular drinker! The @chateau_puech_haut was a weighty wine that I got to have all to myself. Let’s just say it didn’t last the night! And the @andreafeliciw is still a favorite and will definitely be popping up here again and again this summer. Incredible texture, mineralogy to go with the fruit and a super long finish makes this #verdicchio stand up and be counted. Seriously love this stuff!

Oooooh Palo Cortado, you’re so pretty! Beautifully nutty, tiny bit of sweetness on the finish, delicious! This isn’t your grandma’s sherry! Nice work @bodegaslustau! @wsetglobal is forcing me to try loads of fortifieds and I don’t really mind! #sherrylove #sherry #sherrylover

It’s a #soave kinda day alright! This is such a nice drop. Nice citrus and melon fruit with solid acidity keeps it fresh. The finish is pretty long too. I might have to tell @mme_hammond it’s not nice so I can ‘save’ her from it 😉. #garganega #italy #italian

Caught a quick pic of Tony Bish @tonybish.wines hard at work judging some wines that, I can say with certainty, were better than the ones I had just worked through 😂 The benefits of being a legend. It was good to see you Tony! #winejudge #wineshow #winecompetition #nzinternationalwineshow

Saturday afternoon blind tasting practice feels be like... Well, this was almost fun. I have to say, Harvey’s Bristol Cream lives up to its reputation 🤢 The rest of the Sherries were great to outstanding. I’m going to reward myself with a tiny bit of PX now and still call that ‘studying’. Thanks for the excuse @wsetglobal @janeskiltonmw and @meg.abbottwalker. #wsetdiploma #fortifiedexam

Happy Friday peeps! This Matakana sleeper always delivers. Not enough people know about @tobygillman and Gillman Vineyard and I should be happy about that as I can always get my annual allocation 😋 If you haven’t tried it you really should, right @greatlittlevineyards ?

A really great tasting of organic and biodynamic wines from the @manawinegrowers association at the @thewinecavenz. The MANA winegrowers are all certified organic and many are also biodynamic. There were amazing gems from @closhenrivineyard @rockferrywines @huia_vineyards @frommwinery @tewharerawinesnz and @hans_herzogwine. All are from Marlborough, only 1 was Sav Blanc. #sauvignonblanc #pinotblanc #chardonnay #pinotnoir #syrah #merlot #cabernetfranc #cabernetsauvignon

Friday night feels. A well known winery on Waiheke, Te Motu puts together a very decent Bordeaux-blend. Unfortunately, this one was plagued by brettanomyces. While this fault can add interesting savoury notes to a wine, this was a bit over the top. It was still drinkable but the Brett robbed the wine of its primary fruit, aging this before its time. I’ve had 6 bottles of this vintage and it’s a crap shoot as to how the bottles will show up; some have been awesome, and some have been more bretty. Enjoyed drinking it while watching a movie anyway.

Well, hello there Spring! Sav Blanc can get slagged by winos and some of that is fair. There’s the classic NZ style that is so bold, so acidic, so in your face that it has created mega-fans and ultra-critics. This one from Pfalz in Germany is way more restrained in style. It is obviously and unapologetically Sav Blanc bit has the grace and style that shows balance and very careful winemaking and viticulture. Passion fruit, fresh cut grass, slight green pepper, wet stones, medium acidity and a long lime rind finish. Delicious! Thanks again @heikelarsson! You are an amazing ambassador for #pfalz wines. #sauvignonblanc #savblanc #germany #nzwine

To quote Pfalz expert and good friend @heikelarsson ‘It’s one of their Premier Cru, Erste Lage, sites. They have all wines in oak and long sur lee maturation which adds up to rather complex taste with good length.’ She’s under selling this. The length is exceptional. One of the longest lasting wines I’ve ever tasted. The lees contact creates a lovely mouthfeel and texture. This is on of those wines when I served it at 5° it really didn’t feel cold which is something I ascribe to loads of texture. The flavours and aromas were generous with ripe stone fruit, lime rind, creaminess, and florals. Absolutely stonking wine! WINNING! BOOM! @von_winning1849 #pfalz #wine
