The Disney Imagineers had big plans for a section at the back of the newly opened Disney-MGM Studios for a new "land" to be called Muppet Studios (and at one point, Muppet Movieland). The area would have essentially parodied in classic Muppet style the movie-making traditions celebrated elsewhere in the theme park. Phase One of the project was to officially open in 1991 with a new 3-D attraction, supported by a parade and some live stage shows like "Meet the Muppets" and "Muppets on Location: Days of Swine and Roses". Signage soon appeared throughout the theme park announcing the new area. Phase Two would have included an interactive restaurant, "The Great Gonzo's Pandemonium Pizza Parlor," and another major attraction, "The Great Muppet Movie Ride", among many other delights. Parodying the Disney-MGM Studios premiere attraction at the time, The Great Movie Ride, would have been, as Jim Henson explained it, "a backstage ride explaining how movies were shot... and all the information is wrong." Guests would have boarded ride vehicles similar to the ones at The Great Movie Ride and would have glided through several movies being made with gag-filled action happening on both sides. Audio-animatronics Muppets would find themselves in classic film scenes. "Jim Henson was very involved with the project," said former Imagineer Mark Eades. "He was genuinely interested in doing theme park attractions. His natural curiosity and openness and receptiveness to new ideas made him a perfect fit to work with at Imagineering. He was always a pleasant, fun fellow to be around. "The room always lit up when he was around. It was a two year process from concept to finished production (for Muppet*Vision 3-D). I think Jim liked that it would be something people could see for a long time in an environment like a Disney theme park. I think he also liked doing something new, unique and groundbreaking." With the unexpected and tragic passing of Henson in May 1990, the contract was still unsigned and challenges arose. As a result, Disney abandoned further development of Muppet Studios.

Happy #matterhornmonday Everyone! Today I want to talk all about Rock Candy Mountain, a sickly-sweet attraction that was planned for Disneyland but never built. Almost as soon as Disneyland opened in 1955, Walt Disney and his Imagineers began to consider ideas for additions to the brand new park. One of these was Rocky Candy Mountain, an enormous faux mountain that would appear to be constructed entirely out of sugary treats. It was to be incorporated into the Storybook Land area, with the Storybook Land Canal Boats sailing through the caverns beneath it and the Casey Jr. Cirus Train travelling around it. The interior of the mountain would have featured scenes from the Land of Oz, with Disney having acquired the rights to the books. A finale would have depicted Dorothy's birthday party. Imagineers made tasty-looking designs for the attraction, which would feature chocolate, gum drops, marshmallows and more. A small-scale model was built using real candy (including licorice, gumdrops, candy canes and fudge), but there was one one problem: it melted in the non-air conditioned building and attracted scavenging birds. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Rock Candy Mountain ended up on the Imagineering scrapheap with many other ill-conceived concepts. It was felt that it would look unappealing and perhaps make riders queasy, so the Matterhorn Bobsleds was built instead. That wasn't quite the end of the story. When Disney opened Trolley Treats at Disney California Adventure in 2012, it included a model of Rock Candy Mountain, based closely on Imagineer Claude Coats' original design. Next time you're at the park, why not pop by and take a look at this piece of Disney history? 🍬 ⛰ 🍭 • #disney #disneyland #disneyworld #1950s #disneylandparis #swissalps #travel #mountain #visitswitzerland #waltdisneyworld #wdw #matterhornbobsleds #coolrunnings #disneychannel #tommorrowland #fantasyland #mountainclimbers #switzerland #conceptart #matterhornmountain #imagineering #candy #yodel #alps #matterhorn #bobsled #magickingdom #candymountain #disneyland1955

Happy #throwbackthursday Everyone! This image shows Walt with Disney Legends Marc Davis and Mary Blair in front of the original model for “it’s a small world”! Walt is admiring a figure from the attraction that seems to bear a remarkable resemblance to Mary! Have you noticed this one inside the attraction at Disneyland park? She is located halfway up the Eiffel Tower. She was created as a tribute to the attraction’s designer, Mary Blair. Notice the short blonde hair and groovy floral dress. Haven’t seen her before? It’s likely because riders’ backs are turned toward the side of the tower she sits on as the boat passes by. So next time you pass the Eiffel Tower, turn around and look up! 👦🏻 🎡 👧🏻 • #disney #disneyland #disneyworld #tokyodisneyland #disneylandparis #hongkongdisneyland #travel #castmember #shanghaidisneyland #waltdisneyworld #waltdisneyfamilymuseum #disneylandrailroad #disneyig #lilliandisney #disneyside #lillybelle #history #waltereliasdisney #waltdisney #maryblair #imagineering #vintagedisneyland #itsasmallworldholiday #disneystyle #itsasmallworldafterall #mickeymouse #magickingdom #itsasmallworld #marcdavis

Happy #tomorrowlandtuesday Everyone! This concept sketch of the entrance to Disneyland's Tomorrowland is one of the earliest designs for Tomorrowland known to exist. Made in either 1953 or 1954, it's not even known what Disney artist sketched this retrofuturistic gem. The image appears in the book The Art of Disneyland by Jeff Kurtti and Bruce Gordon with over 100 other rare Disneyland concept paintings and illustrations. 🚀 🛰 🛸 • #disney #disneyland #disneyworld #tokyodisneyland #theartofdisneyland #conceptart #disneylandresort #disneylandtoday #shanghaidisneylandresort #waltdisneyworld #d23expojapan2018 #sleak #white #tomorrowland #ttapeoplemover #tesla #spacex #peoplemover #spacemountainmission2 #johnhench #tonybaxter #wdi #waltdisneyimagineering #d23 #disneylegends #disneylegend #tomorrowland #tomorrowland #magickingdom

Happy #thundermountainthursday Everyone! Heres a photo of Walt and his grandchildren at the Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland dedication! Running from 1960 to 1977 at Disneyland, the Mine Train at Frontierland took park guests on a rail trip through caverns, deserts and wilderness areas, populated by 204 lifelike bears, beavers and woodland creatures. It has now been replaced with Big Thunder Mountain, Big Thunder Trail, and now parts are Star Wars Land. 🏜 ⛏ 💥 • #disney #disneyland #disneyworld #tokyodisneyland #disneylandparis #hongkongdisneyland #tomsawyerisland #naturalbeauty #shanghaidisneyland #mountainrange #tonybaxter #disneyblog #bp #disneygram #bigthunderranch #riversofamerica #fronteirland #bigthundermountain #bigthundermountainthursday #bigthunder #imagineering #vintagedisneyland #disneybound #disneystyle #trivia #mickey #magickingdom #mining

Happy #waltwednesday Everyone! Taking a picture with the Disney characters at Disneyland park is a popular activity for many guests. For Walt Disney, taking a picture with the Disney characters must have felt a little like a family reunion. By the time Disneyland park opened in 1955, Walt Disney had released more than a dozen animated features and scores of animated shorts, introducing enduring Disney characters to the world. I recently came across photos of some of these beloved personalities standing with the man who brought them to life. This photo was taken in the fall of 1965 at Sleeping Beauty Castle. I count at least 15 characters in this picture. Happy #monorailmonday Everyone! Here’s a June 1960 photo of the Disneyland Monorail passing over the Submarine Lagoon in Tomorrowland! What makes this image unique however is the mermaids waving to the passing blue Monorail, while two other two others make themselves busy with mermaid stuff! Combing their hair, playing a lyre, that kind of thing. Bringing Star Wars to the Disney Parks was no easy feat. The Tomorrowland attraction that would evolve into "Star Tours" was initiated in early 1985, when George Lucas and key Disney management met to discuss the possibility of Lucas' involvement for a new attraction at Disneyland. Walt Disney Imagineering had been exploring the use of flight simulators since the 1970's, according to Randy Bright, Vice President of Concept Development. "We became aware of industrial flight simulators and their possible entertainment applications within the Disney theme parks when we were researching various technologies for EPCOT Center.” Walt Disney Imagineering Legend Tony Baxter participated in the early discussions with Lucas, and functioned as his co-director on "Star Tours," creating concepts for the attraction within the framework of the Lucas "Star Wars" mythology. "We were fortunate to have such an imaginative mythology to work with," says Baxter. "It made the challenge of expanding it to three dimensions a very exciting and rewarding experience. In some ways we actually had more creative freedom than you would with a feature film." In 1985, Baxter, Walt Disney Imagineering show producer Tom Fitzgerald, Lucas and a small group of ILM designers met at a story session at their Northern California headquarters. "George had an interesting idea," says Baxter. "There's a public preconception that a Disney attraction is completely safe, because it's true. But George thought it might be a nice twist to interject an element of 'danger.' You think you're going to Endor, but the 'real' tour turns out to be something quite different!" "Tony and I spent the following night holed up in our hotel room pinning file cards indicating story elements, special effects, and simulator motions in a grid sequence on the wall.” said Fitzgerald, “We were envisioning 'Star Tours' not just as a film experience, but as a fantasy-adventure film with simulated motion and terrific special effects." By the next morning, they had the first draft of a concept for "Star Tours."

Happy #waltwednesday Everyone! Here’s a photo of pure Walt. How many bosses would pickup trash instead of making someone else do it? One of the first priorities Walt assigned to his ‘Disneyland Dream’ was to achieve the utmost in both cleanliness and beauty and the heretofore accepted trash can was not going to be acceptable in his park. So Walt designed a new trash receptacle. It was rectangular with a lid like a box and on two sides of the lid, flaps. One could push their garbage through the flaps and afterward the flaps would shut, protecting the trash and its lovely scent from any adventurous breezes. Walt then approached a trash can manufacturer with his new fangled design and refused to make them. Let’s stop a moment and reflect. Walt Disney. At this point in time, he was known as the man responsible for creating Mickey Mouse and the first animated short with sound. The man who lead his studio to create the first full length, animated feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. This man comes to you with a new idea for a trash receptacle that will keep garbage and its scent inside the can and away from patrons and you refuse to try and manufacture them?! I don’t know who the person was who said no, but guaranteed it was the costliest mistake in that company’s history. So, Walt figured out a way for his team to manufacture the new garbage cans. And not only were they successful, they made them to match their themed surroundings in the different ‘lands’ of Disneyland. Of course they did. And, before the age of public recycling, Walt’s design is the basis of most garbage cans used in public areas we have lived with. For years. • #disney #disneyland #disneyworld #tokyodisneyland #disneylandparis #hongkongdisneyland #travel #castmember #shanghaidisneyland #waltdisneyworld #waltdisneyfamilymuseum #disneylandrailroad #disneyig #lilliandisney #disneyside #lillybelle #history #waltereliasdisney #waltdisney #queenmary #imagineering #vintagedisneyland #disneybound #disneystyle #trivia #mickeymouse #magickingdom

Happy #tomorrowlandtuesday Everyone! Here’s two photos of Walt Disney World's Space Mountain on the day it opened to the public, January 15, 1975! An enormous pageant was held to celebrate the event, featuring "thousands of flying doves, a pageant of nations, a 2000-member band, 50,000 balloons," and red, white, and blue fireworks. Mercury 7 pilot Scott Carpenter and a handful of other astronauts were on hand. 🚝 🚀 🛰 • #disney #disneyland #disneyworld #tokyodisneyland #disneylandparis #waltdisneystudios #disneylandresort #disneylandtoday #shanghaidisneylandresort #spaceshuttleatlantis #spaceshuttleendeavour #spacex #white #tomorrowland #ttapeoplemover #peoplemover #spacemountainmission2 #space #spaceship #wdi #waltdisneyimagineering #d23 #shuttle #spaceshuttle #tomorrowland #nasa #magickingdom

Happy #mountainmonday Everyone! Here’s a birds eye photo of Expedition Everest, the Theater in the Wild and the Nepal section of Animal Kingdom! On the left, you can see the slightly-themed backside of Everest! Though I would’ve fathered the Forbidden Mountain to be themed the whole 360 degrees around it like the Matterhorn, this painted backside provides a cool look at how Disney goes above and beyond in theming their parks, that even backstage looks beautiful. Happy Earth Day and the 20th Birthday of one of the most beautiful theme parks in the world! When Disney's Animal Kingdom was first announced back in the early to mid 90's, the project had a different name and a slightly different feel to it than it does now. Called the Wild Animal Kingdom, the park was to be separated into three separate lands rather than the five or six it is currently separated into.  The three lands were to be themed around live animals, extinct animals, and mythical animals.  As the project continued, the live and extinct portion of the park continued to flourish on the design board, but the mythical portion, the land known as ‘Beastly Kingdom’ began to dwindle more and more until due to budget cuts, it was cut completely out of the plans for opening day.  Some suggest that it will be added at a later date, but it never did. However the idea became true recently, as Pandora, The World of Avatar opened in the land designated for the Mythical Beasts section. Disney’s Animal Kingdom is the first Walt Disney World Resort theme park where the show literally eats the landscape. Here’s to another great 20! 🌏 🌳 🦒 #animalkingdom #animalkingdom20 #joerhode #earthday #earth #animal #animalkingdom20thanniversary #pandora #treeoflife #disneyside #disneybound #disneyfan #dinolandusa #dinoland #mickeymouse #disneysanimalkindom #disneysanimalkingdom20th #disneyanimalkingdom20th #magical #manmade #natural #disneyparks #aerialphotography #aerial #photography #photooftheday #avatar #pandoratheworldofavatar #imagine
