Hoensbroek Castle, North Brabant, the Netherlands. Great road trip. Beautiful castle. Have you been to the Dutch countryside? After visiting every country in the world, I am now trying complete Nomad Mania's list of 1,281 world regions. You can join Nomad Mania for free on NomadMania.com.
Every country in the world is not enough. Every territory in the world is not enough. I just signed up for Nomad Mania. In my opinion, the ultimate travel list. Instead of "just" 193 countries (UN) and 327 countries and territories (Travelers' Century Club), Nomad Mania divides the world into 1,281 regions. So instead of an impressive 100% world map, my map on Nomad Mania isn't that impressive. 496 of the 1,281 visited so far. A lot of exciting trips ahead of me. The founder, Harry Mitsidis doesn't think anyone will ever complete the list, but I will give it a try! Here are a few photos from my travels this year: 1. View of Copenhagen from Church of Our Saviour. 2. A dish at Hotel Landgoed Het Roode Koper, a lovely country hotel in the Netherlands with a Michelin star. 3. View at Colombia Beach Resort, the best hotel in Cyprus I've stayed. 4. Outrigger Laguna Phuket, a great value resort in Thailand. 5 and 6. 71 Nyhavn Hotel, a fantastic and new favourite place to stay in Copenhagen, Denmark. The last photo is the beautiful room view.
New Home After Exploring Zealand I am still in Denmark after reaching two milestones earlier this year, 300 countries and territories on Travelers' Century Club's list and completing all FIFA nations of the world (211). Now I am focusing on lectures/public speaking and have found a beautiful new home in the centre of Randers (the 6th biggest city) after exploring more of Zealand (The island where the capital, Copenhagen is located). I now feel I have seen all of the important sights of Denmark, except one, the island of Anholt, which I, of course, expected to visit in a not too distant future. On Zealand, I visited Christiania for the first time and saw some new sights like the Hermitage Hunting Lodge (photo) in the par force hunting landscape in North Zealand. One of Denmark's world heritage sites. I had a good stay at STAY Seaport, an apartment-hotel in Nordhavn with 53 spacious high-quality apartments. One of the best apartments I've stayed. A great choice if you need more space than you usually get at hotels plus the possibility to cook and do laundry. Copenhagen has a few world-class hotels like D'Angleterre and Nimb, and after my recent visit, I am happy to add another one. 71 Nyhavn Hotel is a hotel in Nyhavn, as the name indicates, with an attractive design and surprisingly quiet location. It's two recently renovated warehouse buildings from the early 1800s, at the end of the street with a view of the Nyhavn Canal and Nyhavn itself. The design, ultra-comfortable bed, ultra-fast Wi-Fi, modern bathroom and Karmameju products are some of the reasons my room made a great impression on me. Finally, I found the service to be great at the reception, and the air quality to be a lot better than some of the Copenhagen properties located on heavily trafficked roads. 71 Nyhavn Hotel would be my hotel of choice in Copenhagen if on any budget, while their partner hotels of Wake Up are my recommendation if on a low budget.
Christmas Island is an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean with a population of fewer than 2,000 people. To save money, I decided to fly from Jakarta on a chartered Garuda plane under the name Christmas Island Air, instead of flying Virgin Australia from Perth. The flight was comfortable and I was very excited about arriving on Christmas Island as I had thought about it many times in the past years, and finally decided to go. There’s another Christmas Island also known as Kiritimati in the Line Islands of the Pacific Ocean, but this article is entirely about the Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. Before my visit, I decided to contact the local tourist board, the Christmas Island Tourism Association, about the possibility of a small partnership. An island tour was arranged and I would like to thank Linda and Jahna for their help. Although I did manage to hitchhike on Christmas Island for shorter trips, it would have been very difficult to see the sights I saw without the island tour I got. Below are a lot of the photos I took during my three-night visit. I stayed two nights at the cheapest accommodation bookable at the moment, a private room at an Airbnb. Friendly hosts, comfortable and free WiFi. The second night I spent at the most exclusive place you can stay on Christmas Island. A unique experience called Swell Lodge. So far, it’s just one unit, an eco-chalet nature-based tent-style accommodation with a comfortable bed, shower, toilet, sinks, couch, dining table and a balcony with a stunning view. Swell Lodge is a unique all-inclusive concept with daily guided activities and a private chef. Certainly something completely different from what Christmas Island has to offer, and an experience I liked a lot. I have slept in a luxurious tent before at an Oberoi property in India, but with the unique location, it felt very special to me, even after more than 1,000 hotels. Christmas Island is an expensive place to visit for Europeans. It’s a long journey to get there and flights are not cheap, but if you want a unique travel experience with a lot to see (photos below), and a destination without mass tourism, Christmas Island is a great choice!
Three Tips for the Maldives 1. I would recommend to visit in the summer instead of winter. It's a lot cheaper. 2. I would recommend to combine a visit to the Maldives with other countries. For example nearby Sri Lanka. If your budget can't handle two weeks in the Maldives, maybe it can handle five days and then 9 days on a low budget in Sri Lanka, which has a lot to offer. Alternatively, Air Asia has cheap flights from Kuala Lumpur. 3. I have stayed at more than 50 private island resorts in the Maldives and I must say there is a big difference between them. I would recommend to do a lot of research before selecting a resort. Tripadvisor, henriktravel.com, Kiwi Collection and Maldives Complete all have valuable information. Below are five of the resorts I visited on my last visit. You can read more about them and a lot more on henriktravel.com 1. Water Villas at LUX* South Ari Atoll. One of the bigger resorts (193 villas total), but a unique resort with a contemporary design. @luxsouthari 2. Amaya Kuda Rah South Ari Atoll, Maldives. I only did a day visit to this island but it's a great resort. I liked this bathroom a lot. @amayakudarah 3. Kurumba. A great value resort only 10 minutes from the international airport in Malé. Their Thila-restaurant is one of the highest ranked restaurants in the Maldives on TripAdvisor. I have been to this resort twice before and like it a lot. This time I stayed in a beautiful pool villa with this beautiful bed @kurumba_maldives 4. Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma. A good value resort unlike any other Holiday Inn I’ve stayed. @holidayinnresortmaldives 5. Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi. Fairmont recently opened this stunning new resort with amazing villas and butler service. @fairmont.maldives
La Vie, Osnabrück, just closed its door despite three Michelin stars. I had a great experience there earlier this year. Here are ten of the photos. Thanks and good luck to the chef, Thomas Bühner and his team.
Incredible Alaska. Took an Uber from Anchorage to Seward to catch a cruise. Can't think of a more scenic drive ever. Stopped several places to take photos including this spot. After a Kenai Fjords cruise, I went to Anchorage to stay at Hotel Captain Cook @hotelcaptaincook , a comfortable 546-room downtown hotel with good service. Have you been to Alaska?
Samsø, Denmark: World's First 100 Percent Renewable Energy-Powered Island. Less than 4,000 people live on Samsø. I can highly recommend travelling off-season and have sights to yourself. Well worth a visit.
Strandhotel Glücksburg @strandhotelgluecksburg stunning building and four star hotel next to the sea and close to the German/Danish border.
Reethi Faru Resort @reethifaruresort - One of the best value resorts in the Maldives. The Maldives is great value in the summer. Tip: Compare rates in July with rates in December and see the big difference.
Chichijima, Ogasawara. A Japanese territory in the Pacific. There are to my knowledge two ways of visiting this territory. Americans (only) can fly to the island of Iwo Jima. The other option is a ferry of approximately 25 hours from Tokyo. As I'm from Denmark I went with this option and had a comfortable journey with the ferry company, Ogasawara Kaiun. On Chichijima, I stayed at a comfortable little family-run hotel called Hotel Pat Inn @hotelpatinn in a Japanese style room with complimentary WiFi. I explored the island by a combination of hitchhiking and a lot of walking. A unique travel experience to the portfolio.
The blowholes on Christmas Island, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean. Flew to Christmas Island last month from Jakarta on a chartered flight. Much cheaper than flying from Perth. Christmas Island is a beautiful, unique place that is part of the Travelers' Century Club's list of 327 countries and territories. Edit: The island now has a truly great place to stay. Swell Lodge. You can read about it on my website.
Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen, Denmark. Visited earlier this year and stayed at the great budget hotel, Wakeup Copenhagen Carsten Niebuhrsgade for the second time. @wakeupcopenhagen Copenhagen is one of my favourite cities. Have you been?

A stunning newer Maldivian-owned resort with great service, good food and excellent villas. @fushifaru 6: Reethi Faru Resort. A great overall resort with excellent value for money. Five Great Dutch Country Hotels I recently had a great visit to the Netherlands and explored some of their great country hotels that I can highly recommend. Here are five photos and some quick information about each. Photo 1: Hotel Landgoed Het Roode Koper @roode_koper A massive 3,000-hectare estate with a homely hotel, a Michelin-starred restaurant, beautiful garden and an outdoor swimming pool. A well-deserved membership of Relais & Châteaux. Excellent staff and charming rooms make it one of the best places I've stayed in the Netherlands. Photo 2: Duin & Kruidberg @duinkruidberg A stunning location approximately 30 minutes by car from Amsterdam. Landgoed Duin & Kruidberg is an estate with classical rooms and more than 100 years of age with a Michelin-starred restaurant as the main attraction. In 2002, the hotel opened for the general public, and they established the restaurant, De Vrienden van Jacob. Less than five years later it was awarded one Michelin star and has kept it ever since. The food was a fantastic experience, better than some of the two Michelin-starred I have experienced. Photo 3: Kasteel Engelenburg @kasteelengelenburg A great Dutch country hotel with charming rooms, friendly service and great food that I visited for the second time. A member of @relaischateaux , but surprisingly no Michelin star. It's hard for me to understand as the food was much better than at some of the Michelin-starred restaurants I've experienced in Europe. The prices are excellent value, and I wouldn't be surprised if I make a trip to Kasteel Engelenburg again in one of the coming years. Photo 4: Landgoed de Wilmersberg @WilmersbergNL A bigger country hotel with 59 rooms, beautiful surroundings and a focus on high value. A Michelin-guide restaurant and facilities to match the size of the hotel such as a wellness-centre, tennis court and indoor swimming pool. Photo 5: Huize Koningsbosch @huizekoningsbosch A great value hotel located approximately 27 kilometres from Amsterdam. If you are travelling alone, this hotel has a cheap single room bookable for less than 75 euros per night. Each room has a flat-screen TV and private bathroom with a bath or shower.
Direction Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands. This uninhabited island has one of the best beaches I've ever seen. Cocos (Keeling) Islands is an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean with flights from Christmas Island and Perth. Add it to your list?
My Maldivian Adventures Continues. About to leave Palm Beach, Maldives @palmbeachislandmaldives after two nights. An awesome property with comfortable rooms, great staff and good food on a stunning island.
Ten Recent Properties Maybe some inspiration for some for the summer holidays? You can read about them all on my website in the near future. Photo 1: Fushifaru, Maldives. A stunning new Maldivian-owned resort (opened back in October) with beautiful villas, great service and good food. Mine had this view. @fushifaru Photo 2: Makunudu Island, Maldives. An authentic experience focusing on the natural experience. A unique design unlike any other of the 50+ resorts I've stayed in the Maldives. @makunudu Photo 3: COMO Cocoa Island, Maldives. One of the best resorts I've stayed here. The service is great, and the food is comparable with the best places I've stayed in the Maldives. @comococoaisland Photo 4: Hotel Pat Inn, Ogasawara. After approximately 25 hours by ferry, I arrived at Chichi-jima, Ogasawara and stayed at the beautiful Hotel Pat Inn where I stayed in a Japanese style room. My first visit to Mykonos. I liked the colours at the resort with great staff. @petasosbeach Photo 7: Canaves Oia, Santorini.
