It’s important for an athlete to be both explosive and controlled when changing directions while performing. You can see as each athlete lands, they immediately bounce right back into jumping to continue the drill. This is very rare in an athletes programming, but every so often (with athletes who are capable) we will throw in strongman implements. @its_james17 took to stones very quickly and made them look way to easy after a few training sessions. Stones are an interesting power movement because while it doesn’t look at explosive as cleans, it’s still a quadruple extension movement. Most people see atlas stones and immediately say “ahhh, that would break my back” but the truth is because the spine is locked in flexion with extra bracing of the torso against the stone, it’s not as detrimental as other forms of lifting. #atlasstones #strongmantraining #strongman #athleticdevelopment #lewisfitnessandperformance #strengthtraining #football #eriepennsylvania #atlasstonetraining

The hamstrings and glutes are important muscle groups that are often undertrained in athletes, especially with the high number of quadriceps dominant exercises that are frequently seen in “leg day” programs. These quad dominant programs create asymmetries between the front and back of the leg which increases the likelihood of hamstring strains and other injuries such as ACL tears, especially in female athletes. The hamstring is also instrumental in the recovery phase of the stride when sprinting and also allows an increased ground contact force when it is trained appropriately. This will help to result in a greater acceleration which is vital to performance across all sports. In the video below, we have the Mercyhurst Women’s Basketball team performing cable stiff leg single leg deadlifts (SLSL Deadlifts) to allow us to focus on the hamstring (as well as the rest of the posterior chain.)
