‘Painting is a record of not knowing where you’re going’. Jennifer Higgie unpacks American painter Amy Sillman’s practice and humour when it comes to making art. . . @camdenartscentre @frieze_magazine @jenniferhiggie #camdenartscentre #frieze #friezemagazine #jenniferhiggie #amysillman #londonexhibition #abstract #abstractart #painting

Thank you @camdenartscentre and Jennifer Higgie for the really insightful talk on Amy Sillman’s work and first foray into a UK institution last night! Tinkering and composing with shape and colour, Higgie talked about the element of transformation at the heart of Sillman’s practice, which turned to Ovid’s ‘Metamorphoses’ for inspiration. . . #jenniferhiggie #frieze #friezemagazine @frieze_magazine @jenniferhiggie #camdenartscentre #arttalk #artlecture #amysillman #painting #abstractart #abstractexpressionism

Like the arrival of Father Christmas’ truck of pop to get the season of joy underway, Alex Katz‘ new paintings at Timothy Taylor are wall to wall Coca-Cola ladies sprinkling a little bit of American optimism around town. Cut and juxtaposed, Katz’s figures (who is 91 by the way!) are like the characters of a comic book strip or an advertising campaign of buxom blondes on red convertibles. On now until 21 December. . . #alexkatz #katz #alexkatzart #alexkatzexhibition @timothytaylorgallery #timothytaylor @alex_katz_official #timothytaylorgallery #timothytaylorlondon #popart #pop #cocacola #coke @cocacola @cocacolaeu

Look familiar? This austere black and white photograph pictures none other than Iwona Blazwick, director of @whitechapelgallery and generally awesome female, disguised as a botanist named Miss Amelia West. Just discovered this whimsical reimagining of the Ladies’ Field Club of York by artist duo Mark Dion and J. Morgan Puett, and can’t get enough. Thank you Dr James Boaden for your wonderful talk on this work! . . @yorkuniversity @courtauld @tate @whitechapelgallery #iwonablazwick #markdion #jmorganpuett #dion #tate #tatecollection @railwaymuseum #yorkuniversity #photography

From Oskar Kokoschka’s doll of his lover Alma Mahler to Man Ray’s erotic photographs of Lee Miller and Gertrude Stein’s ode to Alice Toklas, ‘Modern Couples’ is an exhibition with a real beating heart that tells the stories of passion, betrayal and friendship that have forged some of the greatest art of the 19th and 20th centuries. With so much research and curatorial knowledge that clearly lies behind the scene of this show, it really deserves our careful attention. 💛 . . @barbicancentre #barbican #barbicancentre #barbicanartgallery #moderncouples #moderncouplesexhibition #oscarkokoschka #leemiller #almamahler #manray #gertrudestein #alicetoklas #londonexhibition #exhibitionoverload

Brutalism meets green fingers at the Barbican on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The conversatory is probably one of my favourite spots in central London, especially in the long shadows of the autumn sun. ☀️ . . @barbicancentre #barbican #barbicancentre #barbicanconservatory #conservatory #secretlondon #greenlondon

Sumptuous strokes of paint that shift and mutate into scenes of pastoral landscapes and abstract fields of emotion. Ilse D’Hollander is the next in a long line of overlooked artist’s estates to get the call up to the big leagues as Victoria Miro takes the Belgian artist under their wing. Passing away at the age of 29, D’Hollander reveals her wonderful sense of colour, space and surface with subtle tones and sparse compositions, in a body of work ripe for a survey. . . #ilsedhollander #dhollander @victoriamirogallery #victoriamiro #victoriamirogallery #victoriamiromayfair #victoriamirolondon #victoriamirogallerylondon #painting #abstract #abstractart #abstractpainting #mayfair #artistestate

Richard Smith’s electric pop of colour at Hazlitt Holland Hibbert on an exceedingly rainy day in London town. Smith is a little known giant of the British generation that traversed abstract expressionism and pop art in New York during the 1960s. The energy of these paintings, capturing Smith’s response to the city when he arrived in 1959, reminds me of Mondrian’s first experience of the big apple back in 1940. . . #hazlitthollandhibbert @hazlitthollandhibbert #richardsmith #richardsmithartist #popart #abstract #abstractart #abstractpainting #painting #abstractexpressionism #mondrian #pietmondrian

Died and gone to interior design heaven with this divine combination of mid-century furniture and major artworks @levygorvy, inspired by the one and only Lord Duveen - Britain’s 20th century answer to the mega art dealer with the deepest of pockets. . . . #levygorvy #levygorvygallery #lévygorvy #lévygorvygallery #lévygorvylondon #duveen #josephduveen #londonexhibition #duveengalleries #lordduveen #artdealer

‘I have to feel a certain remove from the painting so I feel free to deface it, to ruin a perfectly good painting to try and get to the next page. Whether or not there’s any shot at the sublime - that isn’t for me to say.’ Joe Bradley’s new paintings at Gagosian this autumn continue to play with the heritage of abstract art, from de Kooning to Baselitz, and its ability to suspend belief in its illusion made out of cloth and paint. . . #joebradley #bradley #joebradleyart @gagosian #gagosian #gagosiangallery #gagosiangrosvenorhill #gagosianlondon #painting #paint #abstractart #abstract #abstractpainting

The push pull of abstract vs figurative is at the heart of Sue Williams’ new paintings at Skarstedt this autumn. With fragments of domestic motifs like tables, chairs and girls in pigtails drifting across the canvas, these paintings look like cartoonish scenes of traditional gender roles that have just been blown apart. . . #suewilliams #suewilliamsartist #skarstedt #skarstedtgallery #skarstedtlondon @skarstedtgallery #americanart #americanartist #painting #abstractart #figurativeart

Hannah Wilke’s beautiful and rarely seen paintings are now on display at Alison Jacques, getting a much deserved spotlight. Filled with vaginal and phallic forms, floral landscape and a soft pastel palette, Wilke conjures a curiously sensual abstract work. This is the star of the show but...price tag @alisonjacquesgallery? . . . #hannahwilke #wilke #feminist #feminism #feministart #feministartist @alisonjacquesgallery #alisonjacques #alisonjacquesgallery #alisonjacquesgallerylondon #londonexhibition

The Vagina Monologues... Terracotta and kneaded eraser vaginas by the one and only Hannah Wilke, now on display at Alison Jacques in Fitzrovia. Wilke was one of the first feminist artists to use vaginal forms in her art work, wanting to create new positive associations for female genitalia. Using rubbers, Wilke also makes connections to the erasing or rubbing out of women in culture and their sexuality. . . . #hannahwilke #wilke #feminist #feminism #feministart #feministartist @alisonjacquesgallery #alisonjacques #alisonjacquesgallery #alisonjacquesgallerylondon #londonexhibition

What is mars energy though... American rising artist Lucy Dodd takes over Sprüth Magers this autumn, after the thrill of her @Whitney museum show, with new paintings that continue to play with the theatrics of the medium and shift into images of the cosmos. Paintings that draw you in yes...but a press release that was close to nonsensical - artspeak at perhaps its most comical! . . #lucydodd #dodd #spruthmagers #spruthmagersgallery #spruethmagers #spruethmagerslondon #spruethmagersgallery @spruethmagers #americanartist #artspeak

Human and machine meet as Pierre Huyghe captures the furious flutter of our minds, rifling through a million images and ideas a second, at the Serpentine Gallery. Also rather in keeping with the Serpentine’s programme of artists drawn to the connection between human intelligence, imagination and frailty, and the growing possibilities of digital networks and AI. . . #pierrehuyghe #huyghe #serpentine #serpentinegallery #serpentinegalleries #serpentinegallerylondon @serpentineuk #frenchart #digitalart #videoart #installation #frenchartist #londonexhibition
