S A L A D D R E S S I N G S I’m often asked what salad dressing is best to use. Honestly, my favorite ones are usually homemade with either avocado oil or olive oil, some type of vinegar, minced garlic, a bit of citrus and some spices and herbs. I do understand, that for the sense of saving time or simply to prevent “boredom”, a salad dressing that is already made can be useful. Here are some things to look for when choosing a store bought dressing. 1) Read the entire label! The shorter the ingredient list, the better. Learning to read labels on all your food items is a must. You’ve gotta read labels like a boss. 🔎 2) Make sure it is free from hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, and free from food coloring. All these are ingredients that are detrimental to your health! 3) Stay away from “fat free”!! Fat-free usually means that the item is loaded with extra sugar to make up for the lost flavor from fat. Not good! 4) Stay away from vegetable oils (including soybean, cottonseed, canola, corn and just plain vegetable oil). They are highly processed, usually made from GMO crops and are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which can contribute to more inflammation. Remember, we’re looking to increase our Omega-3 intake. 5) Stay away from dressings with too much sugar!! When it comes to a salad dressing, I would recommend one that has no more than 3 grams of sugar per serving. Read the label to see how much sugar per serving it contains and be sure to measure that out. You are eating a salad after all!! Not a bowl of candied vegetables... 6)And, finally, pick a salad dressing that is made with a healthy fat, that helps fight inflammation not contribute to it, such as avocado or extra virgin olive oil. You’ve gotta share this one! It’s so yummy!! Makes enough for two servings. INGREDIENTS 2 cups kale (fresh) 2 cups water 2 cups frozen pineapple 1 banana 2 tablespoons coconut oil INSTRUCTIONS Blend kale, water and coconut oil until smooth. Next add the remaining fruits and blend again. (Or you can just throw it all together if you have a strong, high-speed blender) #yum
