Barely an hour goes by when I don’t think about a cinematic moment by my favourite film director and, after a lot of thought on the matter, I’ve come to the conclusion there is probably no other lifeboat station on the network more “accidentally Wes Anderson” than @rnliqueensferry. #rnli #scotland #queensferry #southqueensferry #forthbridge #architecture #wesanderson #accidentallywesanderson

Eat Sleep Lifeboat Repeat: After a couple of days in the epic surroundings of South Queensferry, it’s time to move on to another magnificent spot — North Berwick where I’ll be working tomorrow. There are bridges and there are bridges: I’ve been working in a really special spot today. The Forth Bridge (a @unesco World Heritage Site) dominates the skyline right beside @rnliqueensferry and this iconic feat of engineering was crying out to be my first glass plate of the day. I haven’t been able to take my eyes off the bridge since arriving yesterday...and now I can’t take my eyes off this gorgeous new plate! True to form, you can see every brick and bolt. If you’d like a print, it won’t be on the site till next month, but you can head to my Limited Edition Prints page and choose the ‘Reserve a Print’ option. Number 3/50 has already been reserved today but the rest are available. Swipe to see the crew photograph we made a couple of hours later, the bridge forming a unique backdrop to the Queensferry lifeboat volunteers. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #queensferry #forthbridge #unesco #unescoworldheritage #unescointheuk

This time last night, @rnli_kinghorn were launching on their second shout of the evening. Here’s the first one just a couple of hours beforehand. The volunteer crew were on their way to the casualty within 7 minutes of the pager sounding. Yet again, a privilege to see these amazing lifesavers spring into action. #lifeboat #rnli #sar #scotland #kinghorn #outonashout #savinglivesatsea

This is one of those “Where do I start?” moments. It’s been a great mission so far with @rnli_anstruther at the start of the week and @rnli_kinghorn since Thursday. And, yet again, it’s almost impossible to convey how much has happened over the last few days. We’ve made great plates together and last night I looked on as the crew I’ve been photographing responded *twice* to emergency calls from the Coastguard. In between all this, I couldn’t resist jumping in my kayak to paddle to Inchkeith, the island in the middle of the Firth of Forth pictured in the first photograph here. It doesn’t look far, does it? But it’s around 2.2 nautical miles and took me just under an hour in each direction to make the journey, navigating tidal currents and shipping. It was the first time I really tested the cedar Greenland paddle made for me by a friend. Swipe a bit and you’ll see all the oiling I’ve been doing worked a treat! Anyway, a busy busy time. I’ll post more later but have a swipe through these highlights where you’ll also see that one of the last tasks today is to prepare another ten sheets of glass ready for @rnliqueensferry tomorrow. As ever, I can’t wait! Special thanks to Leanne and Stewart for looking after me so brilliantly over the last few days — the first picture shows the amazing view from their house! #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #firthofforth #inchkeith #kinghorn

‪At 1030hrs this morning, @rnli_kinghorn united with all 238 @rnli lifeboat stations and the French SAR community in lowering their flag to half-mast, remembering the three @sauveteurs_en_mer lifeboatmen who tragically lost their lives last week. A minute’s silence followed. #sar #snsm‬

Hot off the press: This is the newest plate on the project, made just a few moments ago. It’s a beauty, IIDSSM, depicting the view from @rnli_anstruther. So busy and detailed for such a gentle scene: the ‘Lifeboat Launching’ sign; the St. Ayles skiffs (this is where they’re from); the slipway; the floodlights; the guard rails; the lighthouse...the list goes on. And true to form, the obligatory seagull is perched on a lamppost over on the breakwater. The process is working beautifully too. I’m incredibly grateful for that — it’s always a thrill to make an immaculate handmade photograph on glass. Anyway, time to pack up now and move on to @rnli_kinghorn ready for tomorrow. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #anstruther

A fine start to Mission 18 today with @rnli_anstruther. Huge thanks to everyone for all your help and patience. Feel really proud of the photographs we made together — a unique overview of your station before another beloved Mersey class is decommissioned after decades of steadfast service. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp18 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #heritage #scotland #anstruther #merseyclass #lifeboatmanoeuvres

On 10th June 2018, I was in Buckie. Hard to believe that was 30 lifeboat stations ago! Exactly a year later, I’m back on the east Scottish coast in @rnli_anstruther (called ‘Ainster’ locally) at the start of Mission 18 and ready for my 131st station tomorrow. Well, I’m almost ready — after the four hour drive north from Newcastle, just the small matter of polishing ten sheets of glass, which usually takes an hour or so. I’d better get on it! If you’d like to see all six dates and locations for the next fortnight, head to the Mission Map via my profile. When I was looking for that picture earlier, I scrolled past some moments in Ireland with #dapperduncan that made me chuckle. He drives me mad, that man, but he also brings a smile to my face and is a stalwart friend. I can’t remember what he said to me before taking the photo in my previous post but he was certainly responsible for the smirk.

"180!” 🎯 Over the moon with the recent flurry of new patrons — 180 of you are now helping to fund my project, making a massive difference to such a huge undertaking. Thank you to everyone who’s taken that step. The new pledging structure seems to be helping too as I head towards my target of 500. I’ve changed my profile link so that you can take a look. Pictured: Photo by Duncan at my 100th station, Valentia, in September 2017. That was the last one I visited under my own financial steam...@rnli_kessock (station 101) was the first with the financial help of my patrons in June 2018. ✊🏻 #lifeboatstationproject #lsp14 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #keepartalive

The story of the brave, selfless @rnli lifeboat volunteers is told in many ways. Books, magazines, social media and me are just a few. In recent years, there’s also a BBC television programme that you may have seen called ‘Saving Lives At Sea’, a fly-on-the-wall documentary combining onboard footage with moving interviews. I love meeting many of the extraordinary people who’ve been featured and, of course, they often appear in my own photographs. During my visit to Conwy on the North Welsh coast in April, I had my first opportunity to make a specific ‘Saving Lives at Sea’ portrait of Jasmin, Greg and Alan. You might remember Greg and Alan recounting the story of a rescue in the river outside the station. Jasmin, Greg’s daughter, also brilliantly told viewers what it was like to have a Dad who volunteers on the lifeboat. Powerful stuff. And don’t they all look great together outside the station? #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #portrait #wales #conwy #rnlifamily #savinglivesatsea

Sad news coming in from France that we never expect or want to see. This is why we use the word “brave" when describing those who selflessly endeavour to save the lives of others, because things can go terribly, terribly wrong. My thoughts are with @sauveteurs_en_mer (the French @rnli equivalent) and the SAR community who are reeling from the news that three lifeboatmen have died at sea today going to the aid of a fishing boat and its crew.

Mighty Moelfre: Entranced by the simple design of a lifeboat slipway and how it neatly dissipates the waves’ energy. 👌🏻 #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #sar #lifeboat #maritime #nautical #wales #anglesey #moelfre

From Howth to Llandudno: Portraits I made on 12x10 inch glass featuring some of the inspiring RNLI women I met during my journey in March and April. See the ‘Women of the RNLI’ collection in the galleries via my profile link. Almost time to hit the coast again...setting off for Scotland on Monday! 📶🆙 This is a real ‘go to’ clip for me — a good ol’ lifeboat fix! Even though the sound quality’s not great in the wind, turn up the volume to hear the second of the two turbos whining into action as we leave Yarmouth aboard their Severn class lifeboat. The twin 1600hp MTU engines are completely software managed — the throttles can be pushed full ahead and the systems will smoothly bring the 42 tonne vessel up to full speed (around 25-28 knots) within about 20 seconds. Such an incredible sound from an equally incredible piece of lifesaving kit. #rnli #sar #lifeboat #gopro #yarmouth #imperioussevern #ironingthesea #eatsleeplifeboatrepeat #lifeboatfix

035/050: In my last post, I mentioned the prints I donate to the stations I visit. That’s usually print No.1 of the Coxswain/Helms and the crew but last month we agreed on a different number for one particular station to mark a special occasion — 035 in honour of Annie Blaker’s retirement from @rnli_wicklow. Swipe to see her hull number on the print of the crew with their treasured Tyne class, one of the full set I’ve donated to the station as they move into their new chapter of saving lives at sea. Thank you for all your help, Wicklow! Pictured: Coxswain Nicky Keogh and the crew on 12x10 inch glass. See all the photographs at lifeboatstationproject.com (via profile link) where you can even download sound recordings of Annie Blaker’s Detroit engines. #lifeboatstationproject #lsp17 #rnli #rnliheritage #sar #lifeboat #wetplate #ambrotype #maritime #nautical #heritage #ireland #wicklow #annieblaker #tyneclass
