Ahh, this has been so much fun to work on and it’s been so hard to stay quiet about it! 😁 @laurenstucky is not only family, but I’m also lucky enough to call her a friend and a collaborator. ♥️🌟 I love her vision and unique style, and I am still in shock over seeing a few designs I made just for her in her latest line! Pool balls, card suits, and some sweet letters are scattered throughout 😎 Also major congrats to Lauren and the team for having a terrific showing in NYC last week! ♥️ Check out @laurenstucky for more, and to see her gorgeous clothing! 📸 @grittystreetsofnyc #fashion #losangeles #nyc #design #embroidery #collaboration #lucky

Okay, I have a favorite Christmas movie: “The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.” Based on L. Frank Baum’s title with a few liberties taken, this film debuted in 1985 on CBS to low audiences but activates a lot of nostalgia for many, like me. There are commercialization aspects of Christmas that are troubling, but I feel it’s important to think about the context of the time when “modern Santa” became popularized based off of many cultural folktales, especially in the 19th century. Society was undergoing massive changes in how it treated children; basic principles such as psychological development were not realized concepts among most people, which impacted children in unspeakable ways, particularly in the justice system and in parenting. The idea of “adolescence” didn’t even emerge until the first president of the American Psychological Association, G. Stanley Hall, published “Adolescence in 1904.” It simply did not occur to many people that children, even their own, should not be harmed for nefarious purposes; that idea had to be evolved in society, and even that still needs a lot of work. The development of children’s literature and even the normalization of figures such as Santa or the Easter Bunny had some sad commercial motivations, but I also wonder about the level of suffering then. I think I’m lucky to live in a time where figures like Santa are considered superfluous and unnecessary. It makes me thankful for those in the past, like L. Frank Baum and even Walt Disney among many others, who could introduce pops of color and storytelling to help free children from the dreariness of their everyday lives. What was normal for past generations of children, and what is normal for many today, is still unspeakable. What others do to hurt the legacy of advancement of children’s interests is a problem, but in the end... I am glad that there’s creative freedom and that people have worked and continue to work to help children start healthy journeys early on... and I believe creative inspiration and joy can help. #greatak #claymation #lifeandadventuresofsantaclaus #lfrankbaum #santaclaus #rankinbass #サンタの秘密と大冒険 #wizardofoz #christmas #minimalist #nostalgia #history

I had a opportunity to stop in last night at @nicoandbullitt to enjoy art from the unparalleled @velvet_kaleidoscope and @kleokola along with a performance from @electriclookingglass. Here’s a super-quick video. I’m still trying to think of words to describe how wonderful it was to meet so many kind people. ♥️ More photos of the performance are coming Tuesday after I’m reunited with my laptop when this trip concludes! Thank you so much to such gracious hosts for having such a cool event on a Saturday night in Echo Park. #losangeles #baroquepop #livemusic #electriclookingglass #video #color #art

I don’t really like to advertise my pet peeves, but this is one of them 🤣 I also normally abhor “grammar Nazis” and don’t dig judging people by their writing style (I typically don’t know what someone’s life story is like and style can be expressive, so why should I judge someone that way?), but there is a little part of me that goes 😑 over this particular and very stingy and ridiculous point of language. #iamthatjerk They don’t call the movie “West Side Story” “West Sider Story,” do they? #iamsothatjerk #🤣 #alaska #alaskan #language #apstyle #words #petpeeves #themoreyouknow #thinkaboutit #thoughts #facts #mercuryretrograding #westsidestory

See you for, like, a couple of hours tomorrow, Seattle. Then it’s on to Las Vegas, then Los Angeles. We’ve had this trip planned for a while, and it can’t come at a better time. Still thinking about the Volunteer Park Conservatory. I would love to go back as soon as it’s possible... too bad our layover is so brief! #flowers #fleurs #seattle #volunteerpark #volunteerparkconservatory #nature #surreal #dark #85mm

A chance to drive past the collapsed International Airport Road exit before sundown; crews are hard at work implementing repairs. Crews are out at other threatened sites, as well. All the hands on deck have earned and deserve major praise for their work. (The Muni, too, but I couldn’t find their page.) PS, pardon the dirty windshield. It’s a mess outside. #alaska #alaskaearthquake #earthquake #damage #roads #highway #drive #arctic

With so many aftershocks, I couldn’t get to sleep until after 2am. Still on high alert since the earth is still moving. We went to go check on my husband’s office in the Signature Building downtown. Not too bad; some items fell over and a cabinet barfed and tried to take a television down with it, but the printer didn’t get knocked over, at least 🤣 Luckily, there isn’t much in there. Here’s some damage in the third floor stairwell. #earthquake #alaska #alaskaearthquake #damage #check #signaturebuilding #saturday

Hi, everyone. I should have said something a while ago, but I’ve been trying to ensure everything is all right in my house. Now that it’s all right I’ll come here. At nearly quarter til 9 / just after 8:30am, I was reading, my daughter was watching Sesame Street, and my husband was working from home for the morning. I’m very glad we were together. The power cut out not long into the quake, and the sun hadn’t come up, so we navigated through the dark to get out our front door. I’ve been through big quakes here, but this was the worst. Luckily, despite my house being built in 1968, the only thing we had wrong in the house was broken glass and a few destroyed items. Our daughter stayed VERY calm. Our cat is also okay; she wanted a lot of snuggles when found hiding after we searched for her for about twenty minutes. We live in a neighborhood with a network of roundabouts and intersections without traffic lights, so we took a short spin to listen to the radio and warm up. Our corner Carrs grocery store had many of its windows blown out. Employees created a perimeter with their own cars to help keep the area safe. We noticed Christmas lights were on at other homes, and then the tsunami warning ceased, so we decided to huddle at home for now. Huge thanks to everyone who has messaged me asking how we are doing. Other Alaskans, are you okay? #alaska #alaskaearthquake #earthquake #quake #anchorage #shake #carrs #safewaycarrs #grocerystore #windows #winter #ice #arctic

History/pain musings. Scroll on if you are busy or looking for something light to read 😝 Anyway... Place Stanislaus is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The iconic heart of Nancy, France, it offers a stunning, stately buffer between Ville-Vieille (Old Town) and Ville-Neuve (New Town), which was built in the latter part of the 16th century for then-modernization and expansion as the population had grown from very, very humble beginnings. The history of this beautiful city and region, with Metz and Verdun not far off, is exciting, excruciating, complex... and is a part of my own history. I’m no stranger to Nancy, as I was raised hearing so much about it; the last time I went was in 1997, when I was 12. My mother’s mother’s family all originate from this place. This is a photo from June 1940 courtesy of @wikicommons via author Ude (thank you, Ude🙏) in addition to others depicting Nazi occupation of the ancient city that’s been around since the Gauls set foot on its dirt. It always sends my stomach into knots. My grandmother was a small child during this time and has told me about how hard life was during the occupation—food was severely restricted, for example, in addition to a constant air of fear and terror pervading every aspect of daily life. Luckily, my great-grandfather, Roger, had a mean green thumb and managed to grow carrots in the alley behind their home and shared with neighbors. I am not a fan of carrot cake, but I wish I was, as I hear he, well, made a great carrot cake during that time and after. My family still to this day venerates Charles de Gaulle, the former Pétain devotee with a chip on his shoulder who ended up leading a fierce component of Resistance fighters from outside via the airwaves and completely annoyed the Allies in the process. One family legend says that Roger was a quiet member of de Gaulle’s Resistance, spiriting information from spot to spot to help keep a delicate balance of cover for the few who did fight (more on that in a few).

A walk out in nature with my little family was a refreshing adventure, especially with the weird lack of snow showing me Alaska winter colors that I’d never seen before. I don’t often feel super inspired to shoot these days, but today felt thankfully different. #alaska #alaskaphotography #sap #tree #fungus #chugachmountains #surreal #dark #nature #907 #gooutside #49thstateofmind #wintercolors

“Venus in Fire“ • 8”x10” • Swipe for details! • Acrylic on canvas / Paper I’ve had this idea cooking for two months and finally pulled it off today. Not to mention I got so excited that I did not photograph pre-varnish. I’ve been putting off varnishing/coating/protecting my paintings from this fall, but this week I’ve finally started to do it. I’d thought about resin as a sealant, but I’m not at the skill level I feel I’d need to really do it well, and I don’t know if it would fit what I’m going for. Maybe another time I can give that a shot. In the meantime I am liking experimenting with glossy varnishes. I’d go matte, and honestly I feel like the glossy shine is a total pain, in the area of photography, especially... but the color vibrancy upgrade a glossy varnish gives my paintings is astounding, down to even sometimes bringing out colors I didn’t know were there. I’ve received some inquiries about when/if paintings will be for sale. If you see something you like, DM me and let’s talk. (I hope to really get a proper shop going in 2019.) #fluidart #paintpouring #abstract #psychedelic #alaskaartist #minimalistcollage #art #painting #lips #kiss #aries #sagittarius #leo #venus #astrology #original #surreal #mercuryretrograde #mixedmedia
